Endoscopy-induced complication of barotrauma with concomitant benign pneumoperitoneum.

Endoscopy is widely used for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes in modern clinical practice. Two of the less common complications are barotrauma and benign pneumoperitoneum. In isolation, these two complications have been successfully managed conservatively. We report a case of concomitant insufflation-induced complication of barotrauma and benign pneumoperitoneum following endoscopy on a 74-year-old female who was admitted for lower gastrointestinal (GIT) bleeding. A non-therapeutic laparotomy was performed, and she had an uneventful postoperative course. Although conservative management has

Dive Hazards: Barotrauma, Flora, Fauna, Equipment, and Free Diving.

Present-day diving comes in various forms, from utilizing sophisticated diving equipment to relying solely on one's ability to hold their breath. The diver and physician must be aware of the many common medical conditions and environmental considerations of this unique activity. While barotrauma remains the most common dive-related injury, injuries and accidents also are related to diving equipment-related accidents and exposure to marine flora and fauna. In addition, breath-hold diving, which includes free diving, snorkeling, and tasks, is an activity humans have done for thousands of years f

Air Nozzle Injury: Barotrauma Resulted From an Industrial Accident.

Industrial accidents involving compressed air can lead to significant colonic injuries, ranging from minor tears to complete perforations. This study investigates a case of colonic barotrauma in a 40-year-old male oil refinery worker who suffered symptoms of lower abdominal discomfort, distension, and tenderness following the application of compressed air to his anus. Diagnostic tests, including blood count, abdominal X-ray, and ultrasonography, indicated fecal impaction, dilated bowel loops, and free gas under the diaphragm. An exploratory laparotomy revealed a 4 cm x 2 cm hole in the colon a

Case Series on Barotrauma in COVID-19 Infection Patients.

As COVID-19 emerged in the world, there was a high prevalence of intubation and intensive care admissions. Many cases of barotrauma were reported in those patients. This condition is caused by alveoli rupture, which causes the air to enter the surrounding extra-alveolar spaces. It mainly happens in intubated patients. Here, we report 14 cases of barotrauma in COVID-19 patients, which appeared either spontaneously or after receiving non-invasive ventilation, some of the patients presented initially with mild-moderate forms of the disease in terms of severity. Developing barotrauma causes a mana

Modified Intravenous Cannula Ventilation Tubes for Otic Barotrauma Prevention.

Objectives: Middle ear barotrauma is a common complication of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). Tympanostomy tube placement prevents barotrauma by facilitating middle ear equalization. We describe variations on techniques published by Mooney et al and Zhang et al for placing modified peripheral intravenous cannula (PIVC) ventilation tubes, which can be performed at the bedside under topical anesthesia. We aim to evaluate the safety and efficacy of this technique when performed to prevent otic barotrauma in patients undergoing HBOT. Methods: We performed an analytical observational study at a t

Repetitive freshwater diving: risk factors and prevalence of barotrauma.

OBJECTIVE: The aim was to investigate the influence of repetitive scuba diving in fresh water on the middle ear mucosa. The prevalence of middle ear barotrauma (MEB) and risk factors for MEB were evaluated. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective cohort study, Level of evidence 1b. METHODS: During three days, 23 divers made 144 repetitive dives in a freshwater lake. Participants underwent otoscopic examinations and were questioned about ENT-related complaints in the morning before the first dive, in between the dives and after the last dive. Otoscopic findings were documented and classified according to t

Inner ear barotrauma after stapedectomy in the guinea pig.

OBJECTIVE: The safety of scuba diving after stapedectomy is controversial. Stapedectomy is thought to predispose to inner ear barotrauma (e.g., perilymph fistula); however, many individuals continue to scuba dive following stapedectomy without ill effects. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the cochlear effects of barotrauma, similar to that experienced with scuba diving, on inner ears previously treated with stapedectomy. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, controlled. METHODS: Sixteen Hartley albino guinea pigs underwent unilateral total stapedectomy followed by hyperbaric dives on 5 consecu

Barotrauma with extreme pressures in sport: from scuba to skydiving.

The human body is well adapted to dealing with small variations in atmospheric pressure. However when our pursuit of sport and recreation takes us to extreme altitudes or ocean depths, the change in surrounding pressure has the potential to cause significant morbidity. Sports with more extreme changes in atmospheric pressure such as skydiving and scuba diving commonly place the athlete at risk for barotrauma injuries, especially in the middle ear and sinuses. Middle ear barotrauma occurs when a pressure differential develops between the middle ear and the pressure outside of the tympanic membr

[The diagnosis and treatment of lung barotrauma in newborn infants at risk].

Lung barotrauma (LBT) are some of the most frequent complications in the course of mechanical ventilation (MV) in risk newborn infants. The interstitial emphysema among them is the most frequent cause for development of chronic hung diseases, but the pneumothorax induces shock state, connected with high mortality. A retrospective analysis of the histories of the disease was carried out on 18 risk newborn infants with clinical and roentgenological data for pneumothorax. Blood gases and acid-base balance were examined before the incident as well as at definite intervals after drainage of extra-a

Middle Ear and Sinus Barotraumas of Military Pilots in Finland.

INTRODUCTION: Middle ear and sinus barotraumas (MEBt and SBt) are common conditions in aviation medicine, but systematic prevalence data on military pilots in real-life military flight are lacking. METHODS: An anonymous electronic questionnaire was distributed to 170 consecutive military pilots of the Finnish Defense Forces as part of their annual flight physical examinations. The primary outcomes were the self-reported frequency, clinical characteristics, and occupational health effects of MEBt and SBt in flight. The secondary outcomes were factors associated with repeated MEBt and SBt in fl

[Frontal sinus barotrauma: about a case and review of the literature].

Sinus barotrauma is the second most frequently reported injury after middle ear barotrauma. The front sinus is the most common site affected. This is a rare and specific pathology. We here report the case of a 26-year-old patient having severe left frontal pain with ipsilateral epistaxis after a dive. CT scan showed left frontal hemosinus. Patient evolution was good after therapy. Frontal sinus barotraumas are accidents related to the variations in environmental pressure. Epistaxis is a sign of serious health condition, CT scanner plays a role in evaluating potential predisposing factors and e

In vivo role of glucocorticoids in barotrauma vascular repair and fibrosis.

To determine the important repair events leading to vascular collagen accumulation following barotrauma, in vivo changes were assessed during dexamethasone (DEX) treatment, as well as physiological healing. Hypercholesterolemic rabbits underwent bilateral iliac artery endothelial denudation, followed by angioplasty. Messenger ribonucleic acid (RNA) (procollagen types I, III and transforming growth factor [TGF]beta1), and bio-histometric composition of iliac arteries of animals treated with DEX (2, 7 and 7 days; 1 mg/kg1/day1), were compared to that in controls 2, 7 and 30 days after angioplast

Autopsy and experimental observations on factors leading to barotrauma in man.

Morbid anatomical data have been examined in detail from 13 fatal diving accidents in which the primary cause of death was due to pulmonary damage. In addition, the observations on 6 cases of experimental barotrauma on cadavers are recorded. The information is supplemented by the incidental findings in the respiratory system of 19 professional divers killed by causes other than barotrauma, and 97 healthy, age-matched controls who died suddenly or unnaturally. In cases of pneumothorax resulting both from diving and experiment the constant feature was the presence of pleural adhesions and lung b

Transanal high pressure barotrauma causing colorectal injuries: a case series.

BACKGROUND: Rectal perforation by foreign bodies is known; however, high-pressure injury leading to rectal blowout has been confined to battlefields and is less often encountered in general medical practice. Apart from iatrogenic injuries during colonoscopy, barotrauma from compressed air is encountered very less frequently. Owing to the infrequent nature of these injuries, the mechanism is still not well understood. We present our experience with treating high-pressure transanal barotrauma to the rectum and colon in three similar cases. CASE PRESENTATION: The mode of injury was accidental or
