Etretinate (Tigason) hepatitis in 2 patients.

A histologically confirmed, clinically inapparent and reversible hepatitis occurred in 2 patients (1 psoriasis, 1 basal cell nevus syndrome) within the first months after introduction of etretinate therapy. Causes of hepatitis other than etretinate were not found. Reintroduction of etretinate resulted in reactivation and/or persistence of the hepatitis in both patients. These data strongly suggest that the hepatitis in both patients was caused by etretinate. Later the basal cell nevus syndrome patient was given 13-cis-retinoic acid, which caused no liver test disturbances during a follow-up pe

Basal cell carcinoma in a girl after cobalt irradiation to the cranium for acute lymphoblastic leukemia: case report and literature review.

A 12-year-old girl had a lesion located on the upper part of the scalp that was clinically interpreted as a melanocytic nevus and corresponded histologically to a basal cell carcinoma. At age 2 years she had been diagnosed as having acute lymphoblastic leukemia L1, for which she was treated with systemic chemotherapy. She also received telecobalt therapy to the whole cranium for prophylaxis of meningeal leukosis. Having rejected other possible causes that can favor the appearance of basal cell carcinoma during childhood (basal cell nevus syndrome, nevus sebaceus, albinism, etc.), we believe th

Nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (Gorlin syndrome): a case report.

BACKGROUND: Basal cell nevus syndrome, also known as Gorlin or Gorlin-Goltz syndrome, is a hereditary condition caused by mutation in the PATCHED gene. The syndrome presents with a wide range of clinical manifestations, including basal cell carcinomas, jaw cysts, and skeletal anomalies. Diagnosis is based on specific criteria, and treatment typically includes surgical removal of basal cell carcinomas. CASE PRESENTATION: A 36-year-old Middle Eastern man presented with multiple pigmented ulcerated lesions on his face, scalp, and trunk, consistent with basal cell carcinomas. A history of a previ

Multiple pigmented basal cell carcinomas.

Basal cell carcinoma is the most common of all skin cancers and the most prevalent one among Caucasians. Rarely, these tumors are seen in other races. We report a 77-year-old Korean woman who presented with multiple darkly pigmented enlarging nodules on her scalp, face, trunk, and extremities. The patient had first noted a 6-mm pigmented lesion on her left eyebrow 10 years previously. Since then, other lesions had appeared in many locations on her body. She had been otherwise healthy and without a history of exposure to arsenic or radiation. There was no family history of skin cancer, xeroderm

A Case of Phacomatosis Pigmentokeratotica Associated With Multiple Basal Cell Carcinomas.

Phacomatosis pigmentokeratotica is a recently identified disease characterized by the coexistence of an epidermal nevus with sebaceous differentiation arranged along Blaschko lines and a speckled lentiginous nevus showing a checkerboard pattern, mostly in association with various extracutaneous defects. A 52-year-old man presented with asymptomatic ulcerative plaque on his left side of perioral area. A 2 × 2-cm-sized fleshy colored ulceration on his left perioral area was consistent with basal cell carcinoma with nevus sebaceous. Next to the ulceration, there was a light pinkish to fleshy colo

[Gorlin-Gotz syndrome in 3 patients from the same family monitored from 1993 to 1999].

The authors describe the clinical symptoms in three subjects belonging to the same family affected by basal cell nevus syndrome. They emphasise that the typical triad of the syndrome (basal-cell nevus, maxillary keratocysts and skeletal anomalies) was present in the subjects examined. The skeletal anomalies were very evident in the eldest daughter, negligible in the younger daughter and absent in the mother. Only two cysts closely related to erupting teeth were removed in the younger daughter between 1992 and 1999, whereas the basal-cell nevi were clearly prevalent compared to other pathologic

An Easily Missed But Life-Threatening Diagnosis: A Case Report of Gorlin Syndrome.

BACKGROUND Gorlin syndrome, also known as basal cell nevus syndrome (BCNS), nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS), and Jaw cyst-Basal cell nevus-Bifid rib syndrome, is a rare multisystemic syndrome that can affect a remarkable number of tissues and organs in the human body. Patients with this syndrome are in jeopardy of developing basal cell skin cancer during puberty or early adulthood. CASE REPORT Herein, we report a case of a 58-year-old woman who had multiple pigmented skin lesions and a palpable tumor of the left scapula. The patient underwent surgical excision of the above-mention

Genetic Insight into Gorlin-Goltz Syndrome.

Gorlin-Goltz syndrome, also called Basal cell nevus syndrome (BCNS), Nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS), or Basal nevus cell carcinoma syndrome (BNCCS) is a rare, inherited, autosomal dominant genodermatoses, with variable expression and complete penetrance, characterized by the occurrence of multiple basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) at a young age, palmoplantar pits, keratocystic odontogenic tumors, intracranial ectopic calcifications, facial dysmorphism, and ocular and skeletal anomalies. It occurs due to a defective hedgehog cell signaling pathway, caused by heterozygous germ-line mut

Solitary basal cell carcinoma in a child.

Basal cell carcinoma in children is rare. Its occurrence has been described in association with nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome, preexisting organoid nevus, and xeroderma pigmentosum. We present a case of solitary basal cell carcinoma in a 13-year-old boy with nonactive damaged skin or a genetically transmitted syndrome. The contribution of this case is to alert the physician to the possibility of basal cell carcinoma in children so that appropriate treatment may be initiated immediately and any delay avoided.

Basal cell carcinoma developing in a nevus flammeus.

A 44-year-old man with Sturge-Weber syndrome developed a basal cell carcinoma at the site of a nevus flammeus on his right cheek, which had been treated with a course of grenz rays at six years of age without obvious improvement. He also exhibited erythematous papulovesicular lesions on the upper trunk, which histologically proved to be transient acantholytic dermatosis. The association of nevus flammeus and basal cell carcinoma is extremely rare; to the best of our knowledge, only four similar cases have been previously reported.

Neoplastic skin lesions of the scalp in children: a retrospective study of 265 cases in Taiwan.

BACKGROUND: The preferential occurrence of certain skin neoplasms on the scalp of children raises concerns from their parents and warrants special diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. OBJECTIVE: To explore the demographic and clinical characteristics of scalp neoplasms in the pediatric population, with attention to malignant tumors and systemic syndromes. METHODS: Scalp neoplasms in patients aged 12 years or younger were retrospectively collected in 1990-2010 from two tertiary referral centers in Taiwan. RESULTS: A total of 267 scalp neoplasms in 265 pediatric patients were recruited. Amo

Phacomatosis pigmentokeratotica: a 20-year follow-up with malignant degeneration of both nevus components.

Phacomatosis pigmentokeratotica is a rare syndrome defined by the association of an organoid nevus occasionally with sebaceous differentiation, a speckled lentiginous nevus, and other extracutaneous anomalies. The disorder is a consequence of the so-called twin spot genetic mechanism. We describe the first occurrence involving malignant degeneration of both nevus components, giving rise to three basal cell carcinomas over the sebaceous nevus and a malignant melanoma of the superficial spreading type over the speckled lentiginous nevus. This observation, in concert with the other instances repo

Metastatic basal cell carcinomas in Gorlin syndrome-A case series and literature review.

Metastatic basal cell carcinomas (mBCCs) are exceedingly rare, with an estimated variable prevalence rate between 0.003 and 0.55% among all basal cell carcinomas. Although there are hundreds of reported cases of mBCCs, a dearth of evidence exists of mBCCs in patients with Gorlin syndrome-an autosomal dominant genetic disorder. The purpose of this article was to present the first and largest case series of patients with mBCC in Gorlin. A literature review (LR) compares our data with the existing evidence base to underscore the importance of early surveillance, diagnosis and surgical interventio

Nevoid basal-cell syndrome: literature review and case report in a family.

The Nevoid Basal-Cell Carcinoma Syndrome (NBCC), or as it is also referred to, basal-cell nevus syndrome or Gorlin-Goltz syndrome, is characterized by multiple early-appearing basal cell carcinomas, keratocytosis of the mandible, and anomalies of the ocular, skeletal reproductive system. We describe four patients in the same family, all of them possessing a large number of skin tumors associated with other typical clinical and X-Ray anomalies of NBCC. The definitive treatment of NBCC has yet to be established, however, early diagnosis is very important as well as the periodical follow-up exami

Solitary plantar basal cell carcinoma.

Basal cell carcinoma is the most frequent skin cancer, generally located in hair-bearing, sunlight-exposed areas. Basal cell carcinoma usually occurs on the head and neck, but very rarely on extra-facial locations. We report a case of a 65-year-old woman presenting with a solitary non-healing ulcer on the sole of the right foot for two years. Histopathological examination showed a typical nodular basal cell carcinoma, confirmed by positivity to Ber-EP4 on immunohistochemistry. There was no history of trauma, exposure to noxious agents, basal cell nevus syndrome, or xeroderma pigmentosum.

Gorlin-Like Phenotype in a Young Girl With a De Novo PTCH2 Variant Mutation of Uncertain Significance.

Gorlin syndrome, also known as basal cell nevus syndrome, is an autosomal dominant genetic disorder that predisposes humans to tumors. In most cases, this syndrome results from inactivating mutations in the patched homologue 1 gene. Basal cell carcinomas are one of the main characteristics of this syndrome and serve as a major diagnostic criterion. Gorlin syndrome shows a variable phenotype, and recently, other less common mutations in the suppressor of fused homologue or patched homologue 2 genes have been documented in individuals with this syndrome. We present the case of a patient with ear

18F-FDG PET/CT and Whole-Body Bone Scan Findings in Gorlin-Goltz Syndrome.

Gorlin-Goltz syndrome (basal cell nevus syndromes) is an uncommon, autosomal dominant inherited disorder characterized by developing basal cell carcinomas from a young age. Other distinct clinical features include keratocystic odontogenic tumors, dyskeratotic palmar and plantar pitting, and skeletal abnormalities. Clinicopathological findings of the syndrome are very diverse, and many symptoms manifest during a certain period of life. We present the compelling whole-body bone scan and 18F-FDG PET/CT findings in a 32-year-old man with odontogenic keratocyst, early-onset basal cell carcinoma, mu

SUFU-associated Gorlin syndrome: Expanding the spectrum between classic nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome and multiple hereditary infundibulocystic basal cell carcinoma.

Basal cell nevus syndrome (BCNS), also known as Gorlin syndrome, is characterized by an aberrant activation of the hedgehog (Hh) pathway, most cases being caused by PTCH1 mutations. However, certain features such as multiple hereditary infundibulocystic basal cell carcinomas (MHIBCC), sclerotic fibromas, childhood medulloblastoma or meningioma may be relatively specific to a SUFU mutation. We present two patients with MHIBCC, along with a more complex cutaneous and extracutaneous phenotype. MHIBCC syndrome and BCNS may share clinical features and, indeed, both syndromes probably represent diff
