The association between the basal metabolic rate and cardiovascular disease: A two-sample Mendelian randomization study.

BACKGROUND: Mendelian randomization analysis was applied to elucidate the causal relationship between the basal metabolic rate (BMR) and common cardiovascular diseases. METHOD: We choose BMR as exposure. BMR is the metabolic rate of the body when the basic physiological activities (blood circulation, breathing and constant body temperature) are maintained. The normal BMR is 1507 kcal/day for men and 1276 kcal/day for women. The dataset was drawn from the public GWAS dataset (GWAS ID: ukb-a-268), collected and analysed by UK biobank, containing 331,307 European males and females. SNPs independ

Basal metabolic state of hearts of patients with congenital heart disease: the effects of cyanosis, age, and pathology.

BACKGROUND: Experimental models have established numerous myocardial metabolic changes with chronic hypoxia and maturation. We conducted this study to specifically look at the effects of cyanosis, age, and pathology upon the basal metabolic state of the immature human heart. METHODS: One hundred and eighty-one pediatric patients (37 cyanotic, 144 acyanotic) undergoing open heart surgery were recruited. A myocardial biopsy was collected before ischemia and analyzed for adenine nucleotides, purines, and lactate. The effect of cyanosis was estimated by an analysis of age-matched pairs of childre

Potential Association Between Basal Metabolic Rate and Presbyopia: A Two-Sample Mendelian Randomisation Study.

Background/Objectives: Basal metabolic rate (BMR) is implicated in age-related phenotypes, and presbyopia represents a hallmark of ocular ageing. However, the association between BMR and presbyopia remains underexplored. Therefore, using a two-sample Mendelian randomisation (MR) approach, the present study aimed to evaluate the potential causal relationship between BMR and presbyopia in individuals of European ancestry. Methods: Instrumental variables comprised single-nucleotide polymorphisms associated with BMR at genome-wide significance (p < 5.0 × 10-8), derived from genome-wide association

Mahogany (mg) stimulates feeding and increases basal metabolic rate independent of its suppression of agouti.

The mahogany (mg) locus originally was identified as a recessive suppressor of agouti, a locus encoding a skin peptide that modifies coat color by antagonizing the melanocyte-stimulating hormone receptor or MC1-R. Certain dominant alleles of agouti cause an obesity syndrome when ectopic expression of the peptide aberrantly antagonizes the MC4-R, a related melanocyte-stimulating hormone receptor expressed in hypothalamic circuitry and involved in the regulation of feeding behavior and metabolism. Recent work has demonstrated that mg, when homozygous, blocks not only the ability of agouti to ind

BPA exposure in L6 myotubes increased basal glucose metabolism in an estrogen receptor-dependent manner but induced insulin resistance.

Exposure to bisphenol A (BPA) is associated with insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes (T2D). Since muscle insulin resistance is the primary defect in T2D, we aimed to determine whether BPA alters glucose metabolism in L6 muscle cells. L6 or L6-GLUT4-myc cells were exposed to 1-104 nM BPA or the vehicle (0.1% DMSO) for 7 days. BPA at 103-104 nM significantly decreased the levels of the muscle differentiation markers troponin- T and myosin heavy chain 3. Insulin-stimulated phosphorylation of Akt and GSK3, insulin-stimulated glucose uptake, and insulin-stimulated GLUT4 translocation were signif

Altered glucose metabolic pattern in basal ganglia: 18F-FDG PET/CT semi-quantitative analysis of metabolic signatures in neonatal bilirubin encephalopathy.

Neonatal bilirubin encephalopathy arises from unconjugated bilirubin deposition in the brain. Conventional tests are limited: serum bilirubin does not reflect intracerebral load, and MRI T1 changes are late and confounded by myelination. We evaluated whether 18F-FDG PET detects early metabolic abnormalities and monitor progression. Twelve Sprague-Dawley rat were randomly assigned to bilirubin-exposed or control groups. The bilirubin-exposed group received intraperitoneal bilirubin from postnatal day 3. 18F-FDG PET/CT was performed on days 7 and 21, and regional standardized uptake values and c

Heterozygous PTCH1 Mutations Impact the Bone Metabolism in Patients With Nevoid Basal Cell Carcinoma Syndrome Likely by Regulating SPARC Expression.

Nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS) is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by bone and skin abnormalities and a predisposition to various tumors. Keratocystic odontogenic tumors (KCOTs), which are common tumors of the jaw that cause extensive damage to the jawbone, are usually accompanied with NBCCS. Germline PTCH1 mutations in NBCCS tumorigenesis have been frequently studied; however, little is known regarding the pathogenesis of bone abnormalities in this disease. This study sought to investigate the mechanism underlying heterozygous PTCH1 mutation-mediated abnormal bone me

Subthalamic ablation reverses changes in basal ganglia oxidative metabolism and motor response to apomorphine induced by nigrostriatal lesion in rats.

In Parkinson's disease, the functional architecture of the basal ganglia nuclei undergoes profound alterations, one of the most important of which is overactivity of the basal ganglia output nuclei. This phenomenon seems to be intimately related to pathological overactivity of the subthalamic nucleus, which directly modulates the basal ganglia output through its glutamatergic projections. In this study, we investigated the effects of unilateral subthalamic nucleus lesions on the activities of succinate dehydrogenase and cytochrome oxidase, two markers of neuronal activity, in rats with prior u

Genetic effect of basal metabolic rate on the benign neoplasm of bone and articular cartilage: a Mendelian randomization study.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have found an association between basal metabolic rate (BMR) and various malignant neoplasms, including bone tumors. BMR is also associated with bone mineral density, but the causality between BMR and benign neoplasms of bone and articular cartilage remains uncertain. DESIGN: Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with BMR (p < 5 × 10-8) were used as instrumental variables for Mendelian randomization analysis of neoplasm risk. The inverse variance weighted (IVW) method was the primary approach, with the weighted median and MR-Egger regression serving as
