Estimating the reproductive numbers for the 2008-2009 cholera outbreaks in Zimbabwe.

Cholera remains an important global cause of morbidity and mortality, capable of causing periodic epidemic disease. Beginning in August 2008, a major cholera epidemic occurred in Zimbabwe, with 98,585 reported cases and 4,287 deaths. The dynamics of such outbreaks, particularly in nonestuarine regions, are not well understood. We explored the utility of mathematical models in understanding transmission dynamics of cholera and in assessing the magnitude of interventions necessary to control epidemic disease. Weekly data on reported cholera cases were obtained from the Zimbabwe Ministry of Healt

A stochastic fractional model for computer virus propagation with memory effects and exponential delay.

A computer virus is a type of malware that, upon execution, can replicate itself by modifying other computer programs and inserting its code into them. This study develops a stochastic fractional-order delay differential equation model (SFDDE) to describe computer-virus dynamics by partitioning the system into uninfected S(t), latent infected L(t), and actively seizing V(t) computer populations. The model establishes the well-posedness of solutions, including existence, uniqueness, positivity, and boundedness, and identifies two equilibria: the computer-virus-free equilibrium (CV-FE) and the c

Genuine and spurious bistability in a simple epidemic model with waning immunity.

We study an infection-age structured epidemic model in which both the infectivity and the rate of loss of immunity depend on the time-since-infection. The model can be equivalently viewed as a nonlinear renewal equation for the incidence of infection or as a partial differential equation for the density of infected individuals. We explicitly consider gamma, rather than Erlang, distributed durations of infection using a combination of ODE approximations and numerical bifurcation methods. We show that the shape of this distribution strongly influences stability of the endemic equilibrium, even w

Dynamic properties of Kermack-McKendrick-like models.

We rigorously analyze the dynamic properties of Kermack-McKendrick-like compartmental models for infectious diseases, extending the classical SIR framework to include exposed individuals, mild and severe infections, hospitalization, and intensive care unit (ICU) compartments. Using a 13-compartment model, we establish mathematical results on well-posedness, the basic reproduction number R0, a first integral leading to a unique final epidemic size, and the global stability of the disease-free equilibrium under permanent immunity. When temporary immunity is included, we prove the existence of an

Analyzing optimal control techniques in a nonlinear fractional Rubella model with the Atangana-Baleanu derivative.

Rubella outbreaks have posed serious health, social, and economic challenges worldwide, straining public health systems and economies. Effective understanding and control of the disease remain crucial to prevent its spread, reduce its impact, and support global eradication efforts. This study presents a nonlinear Rubella model using the Atangana-Baleanu derivative in Caputo framework (ABC) to account for memory and hereditary effects in disease dynamics. We explore various transmission modes, identify key risk factors, and examine the long-term effects associated with the disease through this

Modelling the impact of human behavior using a two-layer Watts-Strogatz network for transmission and control of Mpox.

PURPOSE: This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of mitigation strategies and analyze the impact of human behavior on the transmission of Mpox. The results can provide guidance to public health authorities on comprehensive prevention and control for the new Mpox virus strain in the Democratic Republic of Congo as of December 2023. METHODS: We develop a two-layer Watts-Strogatz network model. The basic reproduction number is calculated using the next-generation matrix approach. Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) optimization algorithm is used to fit Mpox cases in Canada into the network mod

Mumps epidemic dynamics in the United States before vaccination (1923-1932).

Mumps is a vaccine-preventable, reemerging, and highly transmissible infectious disease. Widespread vaccination dramatically reduced cases; however, case counts have been increasing over the past 20 years. To provide a quantitative overview of historical mumps dynamics that can act as baseline information to help identify causes of mumps reemergence, we analyzed timeseries of cases reported from 1923 to 1932 in the United States. During that time, 239,230 mumps cases were reported in 70 cities. Larger cities reported annual epidemics and smaller cities reported intermittent, sporadic outbreaks

Estimates of Serial Interval and Reproduction Number of Sudan Virus, Uganda, August-November 2022.

We estimated the mean serial interval for Sudan virus in Uganda to be 11.7 days (95 CI% 8.2-15.8 days). Estimates for the 2022 outbreak indicate a mean basic reproduction number of 2.4-2.7 (95% CI 1.7-3.5). Estimated net reproduction numbers across districts suggest a marked spatial heterogeneity.

Analysis of a non-integer order mathematical model for double strains of dengue and COVID-19 co-circulation using an efficient finite-difference method.

An efficient finite difference approach is adopted to analyze the solution of a novel fractional-order mathematical model to control the co-circulation of double strains of dengue and COVID-19. The model is primarily built on a non-integer Caputo fractional derivative. The famous fixed-point theorem developed by Banach is employed to ensure that the solution of the formulated model exists and is ultimately unique. The model is examined for stability around the infection-free equilibrium point analysis, and it was observed that it is stable (asymptotically) when the maximum reproduction number

An Epidemic Model with Pro and Anti-vaccine Groups.

Here, an epidemiological model considering pro and anti-vaccination groups is proposed and analyzed. In this model, susceptible individuals can migrate between these two groups due to the influence of false and true news about safety and efficacy of vaccines. From this model, written as a set of three ordinary differential equations, analytical expressions for the disease-free steady state, the endemic steady state, and the basic reproduction number are derived. It is analytically shown that low vaccination rate and no influx to the pro-vaccination group have similar impacts on the long-term a

Mixed vaccination strategy for the control of tuberculosis: A case study in China.

This study first presents a mathematical model of TB transmission considering BCG vaccination compartment to investigate the transmission dynamics nowadays. Based on data reported by the National Bureau of Statistics of China, the basic reproduction number is estimated approximately as R0=1.1892. To reach the new End TB goal raised by WHO in 2015, considering the health system in China, we design a mixed vaccination strategy. Theoretical analysis indicates that the infectious population asymptotically tends to zero with the new vaccination strategy which is the combination of constant vaccinat

Interplay between Evolutionary and Epidemic Timescales Challenges the Outcome of Control Policies.

The classical SIR model, assuming constant viral traits, represents the cornerstone model for computing key indicators during epidemic outbreaks, such as the expected peak of infections or the impact of control policies. Viral evolution has been reported to challenge the physics of the SIR model, changing the nature of the epidemic transitions or the early-time dynamics of outbreaks. Here we consider a minimal extension of the SIR model, allowing infectiousness to evolve, to explore how the latter mechanism affects the two aforementioned indicators. We show that evolution induces a nonmonotoni

SEIRV epidemiological model for COVID 19 with Holling type II functional response.

Data-driven mathematical models are recognized as a significant tool for understanding infectious disease dynamics and have been valuable in public health research for an extended period of time. In this paper, we develop an SEIRV model that includes susceptible, exposed, infectious, and vaccinated populations to investigate the dynamics of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. We incorporate a Holling type-II functional response in our model, which has been widely useful in studying ecological systems. This approach enables us to conduct comprehensive analysis by integrating analytical, computational, and st

Improved polio outbreak prediction using a Caputo fractional-order model with memory effects.

This paper presents a fractional-order mathematical model of the transmission dynamics of poliomyelitis based on the Caputo fractional derivative to address the memory effects present in biological systems. The model sub-divides human population into susceptible, exposed, infected and vaccinated groups and reflects essential processes of the disease progression and control. A strict theoretical examination is conducted, with the calculation of the basic reproduction number [Formula: see text], using next-generation matrix method. The local and global stability of both disease-free and endemic

A Primer on Inference and Prediction With Epidemic Renewal Models and Sequential Monte Carlo.

Renewal models are widely used in statistical epidemiology as semi-mechanistic models of disease transmission. While primarily used for estimating the instantaneous reproduction number, they can also be used for generating projections, estimating elimination probabilities, modeling the effect of interventions, and more. We demonstrate how simple sequential Monte Carlo methods (also known as particle filters) can be used to perform inference on these models. Our goal is to acquaint a reader who has a working knowledge of statistical inference with these methods and models and to provide a pract

A region-structured model for early warning of Plasmodium vivax malaria transmission risk in the Republic of Korea.

BACKGROUND: Malaria cases in the Republic of Korea decreased during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic but surged in 2023. Current models inadequately address spatial heterogeneity in transmission dynamics. This study aimed to address this by designing a region-structured model considering spatial heterogeneity based on regional malaria data from high-risk areas. METHODS: Malaria-risk areas were identified using data from the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA), with eight regions designated as hotspots. The population heterogeneity of the model by region was represented usi

Mathematical modeling and analysis of a sex-structured syphilis model with control measures.

Syphilis remains a significant global public health challenge, with over seven million new adult infections each year despite the availability of effective treatment. Its continued persistence, particularly among high-risk and underserved populations, highlights the need for robust analytical models to understand transmission dynamics and inform targeted control strategies. This study presents a novel sex-structured compartmental model that captures the biological and behavioral complexity of syphilis transmission, incorporating multiple infection stages (primary, secondary, and latent), gende

Mathematical modeling of tuberculosis using Caputo fractional derivative: a comparative analysis with real data.

In this study, we investigate an epidemiological model for tuberculosis in China using the Caputo fractional-order derivative. To ensure dimensional consistency, we appropriately adjust model parameters to maintain uniform units. The mathematical properties of the model, including the non-negativity, boundedness, existence, and uniqueness of its solutions, are thoroughly examined and established. Sensitivity analysis, based on the basic reproduction number, is performed to evaluate the impact of critical parameters on disease dynamics, and additional insights are provided through 3D mesh and c

Hereditary and antimicrobial factor shaping extracellular bacteria dynamics in an in-host mathematical model of tuberculosis for disease control.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a global health challenge, necessitating deeper insights into the dynamics of extracellular bacterial populations within infected hosts. This study presents an in-host mathematical model that incorporates hereditary and antimicrobial factors influencing TB progression. The biological feasibility of the model is established by analyzing the boundedness of solutions within a realistic parameter space. The equilibrium states, including the disease-free and endemic equilibria, are examined, revealing conditions under which the system remains locally asymptotically stable.

Ebola virus disease mathematical models and epidemiological parameters: a systematic review.

Ebola virus disease poses a recurring risk to human health. We conducted a systematic review (PROSPERO CRD42023393345) of Ebola virus disease transmission models and parameters published from database inception to July 7, 2023, from PubMed and Web of Science. Two people screened each abstract and full text. Papers were extracted with a bespoke Access database, 10% were double extracted. We extracted 1280 parameters and 295 models from 522 papers. Basic reproduction number estimates were highly variable, as were effective reproduction numbers, likely reflecting spatiotemporal variability in int
