[Larva migrans].

Larbish, cutaneous larva migrans or creeping eruption, is a serpiginous cutaneous eruption caused by skin penetration of infective larva from various animal nematodes. Hookworms (Ancylostoma brasiliense, A. caninum) are the most common causative parasites. They live in the intestines of dogs and cats where their ova are deposited in the animal feces. In sandy and shady soil, when temperature and moisture are elevated, the ova hatch and mature into infective larva. Infection occurs when humans have contact with the infected soil. Infective larva penetrate the exposed skin of the body, commonly

Avian Influenza outbreaks: Human infection risks for beach users - One health concern and environmental surveillance implications.

Despite its popularity for water activities, such as swimming, surfing, fishing, and rafting, inland and coastal bathing areas occasionally experience outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAI), including A(H5N1) clade 2.3.4.4b. Asymptomatic infections and symptomatic outbreaks often impact many aquatic birds, which increase chances of spill-over events to mammals and pose concerns for public health. This review examined the existing literature to assess avian influenza virus (AIV) transmission risks to beachgoers and the general population. A comprehensive understanding of fa

Routine screening of harmful microorganisms in beach sands: implications to public health.

Beaches worldwide provide recreational opportunities to hundreds of millions of people and serve as important components of coastal economies. Beach water is often monitored for microbiological quality to detect the presence of indicators of human sewage contamination so as to prevent public health outbreaks associated with water contact. However, growing evidence suggests that beach sand can harbor microbes harmful to human health, often in concentrations greater than the beach water. Currently, there are no standards for monitoring, sampling, analyzing, or managing beach sand quality. In add

Surveillance for waterborne disease and outbreaks associated with recreational water--United States, 2003-2004.

PROBLEM/CONDITION: Since 1971, CDC, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists have collaboratively maintained the Waterborne Disease and Outbreak Surveillance System for collecting and reporting waterborne disease and outbreak (WBDO)-related data. In 1978, WBDOs associated with recreational water (natural and treated water) were added. This system is the primary source of data regarding the scope and effects of WBDOs in the United States. REPORTING PERIOD: Data presented summarize WBDOs associated with recreational water that occurred d

Sun protection by families at the beach.

BACKGROUND: During the last decade, results of surveys of adults showed an increase in sun protection knowledge, a slight decline in the attitude that having a tan was healthy, widespread sunscreen use as the principal method of solar protection, and an increase in sunburning. METHODS: During the summer of 1996, observers recorded the sun protection activities of 352 family groups as they arrived at the beach and did concurrent interviews. RESULTS: Ninety-eight percent of families using sunscreen applied it after arrival at the beach and it was the dominant form of sun protection used. Usual

Sun protection factor persistence during a day with physical activity and bathing.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: The persistence of sunscreens during a day with physical activity and bathing is often debated. We wished to examine the durability of the protection achieved by one sunscreen application. METHODS: Seven areas were marked on the back of 24 volunteers. One area was phototested to determine UV sensitivity. Six areas were treated with either an organic or an inorganic sunscreen (2 mg/cm2). The participants performed physical activities, were exposed to a hot environment and bathing during 8 h and were phototested with ultraviolet-B (UVB) radiation 30 min, 4 and 8 h after suns

Eco-friendly cleaning agent applied for ex situ remediation of beach sand contaminated with crude oil.

Coastal oil spills cause significant adverse effects, and removing weathered crude oil mixed with sand remains a considerable challenge. To address this, an environmentally friendly cleaning agent was formulated using a vegetable oil-based microemulsion for sediment cleaning. The relationship between microemulsion composition and its efficiency in cleaning oil-contaminated sediments in coastal environments was investigated. Component selection followed criteria of low toxicity and high biodegradability, including pine oil as the oily phase, distilled water as the aqueous phase, saponified coco

Antimicrobial resistance characterization of Enterococcus faecium, Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus hirae isolated from marine coastal recreational waters in the State of São Paulo, Brazil.

Coastal water quality is facing increasing threats due to human activities. Their contamination by sewage discharges poses significant risks to the environment and public health. We aimed to investigate the presence of antibiotic-resistant Enterococcus in beach waters. Over a 10-month period, samples were collected from four beaches in the State of São Paulo (Brazil). Enterococcus isolates underwent matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF/MS) and molecular analysis for accurate genus and species identification. The antimicrobial susceptibility fo

Microbiological standards for water and their relationship to health risk.

Maintenance of the microbiological quality of water has been used as an important means of preventing waterborne disease throughout the twentieth century. The commonest microbiological tests done on water are for coliforms and Escherichia coli (or faecal coliform). This paper reviews the legislative and other guidance for microbial standards in drinking and bathing waters and considers evidence for the relationship between the microbiological quality of water and risk to human health. In the past measures of the microbiological quality of water correlated well with risks of acquiring gastroint

Fecal indicator bacteria levels at a marine beach before, during, and after the COVID-19 shutdown period and associations with decomposing seaweed and human presence.

Studies are limited that evaluate seaweed as a source of bacteria to beach waters. The objective of the current study was to evaluate whether seaweed, along with humans and other animals, could be the cause of beach advisories due to elevated levels of enterococci. The monitoring period occurred a year prior to and through the COVID-19 beach shutdown period, which provided a unique opportunity to evaluate bacteria levels during prolonged periods without recreational activity. Samples of water, sediment, and seaweed were measured for enterococci by culture and qPCR, in addition to microbial sou

Pathogenic multiple antimicrobial resistant Escherichia coli serotypes in recreational waters of Mumbai, India: a potential public health risk.

Globally, coastal waters have emerged into a pool of antibiotic resistance genes and multiple antibiotic resistant microorganisms, and pathogenicity of these resistant microorganisms in terms of serotypes and virulence genes has made the environment vulnerable. The current study underscores the presence of multiple antibiotic resistant pathogenic serotypes and pathotypes of Escherichia coli, the predominant faecal indicator bacteria (FIB), in surface water and sediment samples of famous recreational beaches (Juhu, Versova, Mahim, Dadar, and Girgaon) of Mumbai. Out of 65 faecal coliforms (FC) r

[Pathogenic properties of free-living amoebae isolated from natural and man-made bathing sites in the province of Western Pomerania].

INTRODUCTION: Pathogenic amoebae belonging to the genus of Acanthamoeba and Naegleria, as well as species such as Balamuthia mandrillaris and Sappinia diploidea cause harmful, life-threatening infections in humans and animals. These amoebae commonly occur in the natural environment. Free-living, pathogenic amoebae have hitherto been detected in water reservoirs near Poznań, Gdańsk, and Lublin. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The present work focused on the occurrence of thermophilic amoebae potentially pathogenic to humans. Natural and man-made bathing sites in the province of Western Pomerania were st

A fatal case of commotio cordis caused by an accidental fall on the beach.

Sudden cardiac death is a major health problem and a recurring issue in forensic medicine. Most cases are attributed to congenital heart disease, cardiomyopathy, myocarditis, pathology of the coronary arteries, long or short QT interval syndromes, Brugada syndrome or secondary toxic effects of cardioactive drugs. Sudden death caused by Commotio cordis after an accidental fall is very rare in women. Victims are essentially young people who die following a direct blow to the chest sustained during physical activity. In the following, we report a case of an adult with no significant past medical

Traditional and molecular analyses for fecal indicator bacteria in non-point source subtropical recreational marine waters.

The use of enterococci as the primary fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) for the determination of recreational water safety has been questioned, particularly in sub/tropical marine waters without known point sources of sewage. Alternative FIB (such as the Bacteroidales group) and alternative measurement methods (such as rapid molecular testing) have been proposed to supplement or replace current marine water quality testing methods which require culturing enterococci. Moreover, environmental parameters have also been proposed to supplement current monitoring programs. The objective of this study w
