Study on the microstructure of African wild silk cocoon shells and fibers.

Silk fibers and cocoon shells from four African wild silkmoths Gonometa postica, Anaphe panda, Argema mimosae and Epiphora bauhiniae-were studied to gain insight into the structure-property-function relations and potential commercial application. The surface and cross-section of cocoon shells and fibers revealed the presence of prominent structural variations. Cocoon shells were multilayered and porous structures constructed from highly cross-linked fibers that are densely packed within the sericin/gum. Fibers had fibrillar sub-structures running along the fiber axis and with greater number an

Effect of artificial acid rain and SO2 on characteristics of delayed light emission.

The structure and function of chloroplast in plant leaves can be affected by acid rain and air pollution. The photosystem II in a plant is considered the primary site where light-induced delayed light emission (DLE) is produced. With the lamina of zijinghua (Bauhinia variegata L.) and soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) as testing models, we studied the effects of artificial acid rain and SO2 on characteristics of DLE by using a home-made weak luminescence detection system. The results show that the changes in DLE intensity of green plants can reflect the changes in chloroplast intactness and fun

A search for natural bioactive compounds in Bolivia through a multidisciplinary approach. Part I. Evaluation of the antimalarial activity of plants used by the Chacobo Indians.

Thirty extracts of plants traditionally used by the Chacobos, a native community living in the Amazonian part of Bolivia, were screened in vitro and/or in vivo for antimalarial activity. Two of the four species designated as antimalarial, Geissospermum laeve and Maquira coriacea, displayed rather good activity, corroborating their traditional uses. However, they did show a rather high toxicity in vivo. Among twelve species used to cure symptoms relevant to malaria, five showed good activity: Apuleia leiocarpa, Bauhinia guianensis, Nectandra cuspidata, Sparattanthelium amazonum, Tanaecium jarob

Three New Cryptic Species of the Freshwater Shrimp Genus Caridina (Decapoda: Caridea: Atyidae) from Hong Kong, with Notes on the C. serrata Species Group.

Three new species of freshwater atyid shrimp, namely Caridina chui sp. nov., C. bauhinia sp. nov. and C. argilla sp. nov., are described from Hong Kong, southern China using an integrative taxonomic approach. All three species belong to the C. serrata species group and differ from the other members in characteristics of the rostrum, pereiopods, and male first and second pleopods. Phylogenetic analyses based on mitochondrial COI and 16S rRNA sequences show that the C. serrata species group is polyphyletic and comprises at least four lineages. The validity of the C. serrata species group is disc

The role of selected nutraceuticals in management of prediabetes and diabetes: An updated review of the literature. Part II.

We have already published a review about the results of clinical trials evaluating the effects of selected nutraceuticals on glycemia in humans. In this second part, we describe the role of other nutraceuticals involved in dysglycemia. The available evidence showed promising hypoglycemic effects of the nutraceuticals reviewed both for their efficacy and safety profile. However, contradictory results as regard the efficacy of some supplements such as Allium sativum, Juglans regia, and Lycium barbarum on glucose homeostasis have emerged from some clinical studies. Other nutraceuticals including

Identification and classification of silks using infrared spectroscopy.

Lepidopteran silks number in the thousands and display a vast diversity of structures, properties and industrial potential. To map this remarkable biochemical diversity, we present an identification and screening method based on the infrared spectra of native silk feedstock and cocoons. Multivariate analysis of over 1214 infrared spectra obtained from 35 species allowed us to group silks into distinct hierarchies and a classification that agrees well with current phylogenetic data and taxonomies. This approach also provides information on the relative content of sericin, calcium oxalate, pheno

Acute Kaempferol Stimulation Induces AKT Phosphorylation in HepG2 Cells.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) stands as a prevalent global public health issue caused by deficiencies in the action of insulin and/or insulin production. In the liver, insulin plays an important role by inhibiting hepatic glucose production and stimulating glycogen storage, thereby contributing to blood glucose regulation. Kaempferitrin (KP) and kaempferol (KM), flavonoids found in Bauhinia forficata, exhibit insulin-mimetic properties, showing promise in managing T2DM. In this study, we aimed to assess the potential of these compounds in modulating the insulin signaling pathway and/or gluco

Interaction of native and asialo rat sublingual glycoproteins with lectins.

The binding properties of the rat sublingual glycoprotein (RSL) and its asialo product with lectins were characterized by quantitative precipitin(QPA) and precipitin inhibition(QPIA) assays. Among twenty lectins tested for QPA, native RSL reacted well only with Artocarpus integrifolia (jacalin), but weakly or not at all with the other lectins. However, its asialo product (asialo-RSL) reacted strongly with many Gal and GalNAc specific lectins-it bound best to three of the GalNAc alpha 1-->Ser/Thr (Tn) and/or Gal beta 1-->4GlcNAc (II) active lectins [jacalin, Wistaria floribunda and Ricinus comm

Augmenting phage therapy using green nanotechnology for promising infection control, wound healing and devoiding phage resistance in MDR Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Humanity could descend into a pre-antibiotic world as a result of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Phage defenses are considered "vintage heroes" in the battle against multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria. However, phage resistance continues to evolve, necessitating alternative strategies. A potential solution is combining phages with antimicrobials like silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) to enhance the phage therapy. This study focuses on a combination therapy using Bauhinia variegata L.-mediated AgNPs and Pseudomonas phage M12PA to target multidrug-resistant (MDR) Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The antibact
