Tensiomyography detects early hallmarks of bed-rest-induced atrophy before changes in muscle architecture.

In young and older people, skeletal muscle mass is reduced after as little as 7 days of disuse. The declines in muscle mass after such short periods are of high clinical relevance, particularly in older people who show a higher atrophy rate and a slower or even a complete lack of muscle mass recovery after disuse. Ten men (24.3 yr; SD 2.6) underwent 35 days of 6° head-down tilt bed rest, followed by 30 days of recovery. During bed rest, a neutral energy balance was maintained, with three weekly passive physiotherapy sessions to minimize muscle soreness and joint stiffness. All measurements wer

FemHab: The effects of bed rest and hypoxia on oxidative stress in healthy women.

Independently, both inactivity and hypoxia augment oxidative stress. This study, part of the FemHab project, investigated the combined effects of bed rest-induced unloading and hypoxic exposure on oxidative stress and antioxidant status. Healthy, eumenorrheic women were randomly assigned to the following three 10-day experimental interventions: normoxic bed rest (NBR;n= 11; PiO2 = 133 mmHg), normobaric hypoxic bed rest (HBR;n= 12; PiO2 = 90 mmHg), and ambulatory hypoxic confinement (HAMB;n= 8: PiO2 = 90 mmHg). Plasma samples, obtained before (Pre), during (D2, D6), immediately after (Post) and

LBNP-induced changes in plasma cGMP with and without head down tilt bed rest.

This investigation was conducted to test the following hypotheses: 1) If simulated orthostasis (LBNP) reduces plasma cGMP; 2) if simulated microgravity alters any such LBNP-induced effect; and 3) if simulated microgravity reduces resting plasma cGMP levels. In addition, we studied the time-course of thoracic impedance during, LBNP and asked if there is heart rate/blood pressure reduction after LBNP. During real and simulated spaceflight, blood is re-distributed throughout the vasculature along the body axis, vascular mechanoreceptor loads are altered, "excess" fluid is lost from the organism,

Orthostatic responses following 30-day bed rest deconditioning with isotonic and isokinetic exercise training.

To determine if intensive isotonic or isokinetic exercise training during 30 d of -6 degrees head-down bed rest (BR) would accentuate orthostatic intolerance, 19 men (32-42 years) were divided into a no-exercise control group (N = 5), and isotonic (Quinton ergometer, N = 7) and isokinetic (Lido ergometer, N = 7) exercise groups. Training was two 30-min periods per day for 5 days per week. Changes (* = p less than 0.05) in peak VO2 uptake (L/min) from control day 2 to BR day 29 were: isotonic +1.4%, isokinetic -10.2%*, no exercise -20.1%*. Changes in resting plasma volume (ml) from control day

Changes in plasma volume during bed rest: effects of menstrual cycle and estrogen administration.

Bed rest (BR) is associated with a decrease in plasma volume (PV), which may contribute to the impaired orthostatic and exercise tolerances seen immediately after BR. The purpose of this study was to determine whether increases in blood estrogen concentration, either during normal menstrual cycles or during exogenous estrogen administration, would attenuate this loss of PV. Nineteen healthy women (21-39 yr of age) completed the study. Twelve women underwent duplicate 11-day BR without estrogen supplementation. PV decreased significantly (P less than or equal to 0.01) during both BR's, from 2,5

Bed rest in twin pregnancy: identification of a critical period and its cost implications.

Since twin pregnancies often result in poor perinatal outcomes, many physicians advise prolonged bed rest. Recommendations concerning the timing of bed rest conflict and are made with little assessment of costs. This review of twin pregnancies in the North Central Illinois perinatal region establishes that twins are most vulnerable if they are born between 27 and 34 weeks' gestation. If bed rest is to be imposed, it probably should be timed so as to influence this vulnerable period. Intervention (bed rest in the hospital from 27 to 34 weeks' gestation) would cost between $5,720 and $6,909 per

The effects of bed rest on cardiometabolic health: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Horizontal bed rest (HBR) and head-down tilt (HDT) are models of physical inactivity. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we aimed to quantify changes in cardiometabolic outcomes during HBR and HDT in healthy adults. Following the PRISMA guidelines, we searched PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and Cochrane Library until 1 October 2025. Included studies recruited healthy adults (≥18 years of age) undergoing ≥2 days of HBR or HDT. A meta-analysis with mean differences (MD) and 95% confidence intervals (CI), using random-effects modelling was conducted. Forty-four studies were included. HB

The Reduction of Mortality in Acute Myocardial Infarction: From Bed Rest to Future Directions.

Despite the reduction of mortality secondary to cardiovascular diseases observed in the last decades, ischemic heart disease remains the most common cause of death worldwide. Among the spectrum of ischemic heart disease, myocardial infarction accounts for most deaths. Since the introduction of the coronary care units in the 1960s, and until the latest antithrombotic drugs, myocardial infarction survival improved by 40-50%. However long-term mortality after myocardial infarction has not improved as short-term mortality. Moreover, the decline of mortality has apparently reached a "plateau" in th

Blood flow responses over sacrum in nursing home residents during one hour bed rest.

OBJECTIVES: To describe individual BF responses in a nursing home resident population for one-hour periods of bed rest. METHODS: BF was measured for one hour over the sacrum in 0° supine position and 30° supine tilt position in 25 individuals aged 65 y or older while lying on a pressure-redistributing mattress. Measurements were made at three tissue depths (1, 2, and 10 mm) using the noninvasive optical techniques, LDF and PPG. RESULTS: Eleven participants had a PIV response at 1 mm depth in both positions and seven participants had a lack of this response at this depth and positions. The BF

Westeinde sciatica trial: randomized controlled study of bed rest and physiotherapy for acute sciatica.

OBJECT: The authors conducted a study to compare the efficacies of three nonsurgical treatment strategies in patients with sciatica. Their hypothesis was that bed rest, physiotherapy, and continuation of activities of daily living (ADLs) (control treatment) are each of equivalent efficacy. METHODS: This randomized controlled trial was designed for comparison of bed rest, physiotherapy, and continuation of ADLs. The setting was an outpatient clinic. General practitioners were asked to refer patients for treatment as soon as possible. The authors enrolled 250 patients (< 60 years of age) with s

An overview of the issues: physiological effects of bed rest and restricted physical activity.

Reduction of exercise capacity with confinement to bed rest is well recognized. Underlying physiological mechanisms include dramatic reductions in maximal stroke volume, cardiac output, and oxygen uptake. However, bed rest by itself does not appear to contribute to cardiac dysfunction. Increased muscle fatigue is associated with reduced muscle blood flow, red cell volume, capillarization and oxidative enzymes. Loss of muscle mass and bone density may be reflected by reduced muscle strength and higher risk for injury to bones and joints. The resultant deconditioning caused by bed rest can be in

The implementation of game in a 20-day head-down tilting bed rest experiment upon mood status and neurotic levels of rest subjects.

This study evaluated the effect of the implementation of game on mental health among participants in a bedrest (BR) experiment. Subjects were 12 healthy males aged 20-26, who participated in a 20-day 6-degrees head-down tilting BR experiment. The participants were asked to complete psychometrical questionnaires before, during, and after the experiment. We entrusted the participants to manage their leisure time and they intended a game in which all of them could take part over the experiment period. The general conversation and light-hearted mood among the subjects continued during the experime

No effect of venoconstrictive thigh cuffs on orthostatic hypotension induced by head-down bed rest.

Orthostatic intolerance (OI) is the most serious symptom of cardiovascular deconditioning induced by head-down bed rest or weightlessness. Wearing venoconstrictive thigh cuffs is an empirical countermeasure used by Russian cosmonauts to limit the shift of fluid from the lower part of the body to the cardio-cephalic region. Our aim was to determine whether or not thigh cuffs help to prevent orthostatic hypotension induced by head-down bed rest. We studied the effect of thigh cuffs on eight healthy men. The cuffs were worn during the day for 7 days of head-down bed rest. We measured: orthostatic

Metabolic turnover of bone and peripheral monocyte release of cytokines during short-term bed rest.

Immobilization induces abnormal bone metabolism and rapid decalcification. Measurements of bone mineral content disclosed rapid decalcification, especially in lumbar vertebral and metacarpal bones in our short-term 20-day bed rest study. Many factors could contribute to the marked demineralization. The activities of osteoclasts and osteoblasts were studied by following serum levels of tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase and alkaline phosphatase, biomarkers for osteocyte activity. There were no alterations in these enzymes during bed rest. However, urinary excretion of pyridinium cross-links, r

Bed rest and endurance retraining alter persistent inward current estimates in young and older males.

INTRODUCTION: Prolonged physical inactivity induces rapid neuromuscular deconditioning, with aging influencing both the rate, recovery and nature of these changes. However, its effects on the modulation of motoneuron excitability across age groups remain unclear. This study examined how bed rest and subsequent endurance retraining influence persistent inward current (PIC)-related estimates, motor-unit (MU) discharge behavior, and circulating tryptophan (TRP) and kynurenine (KYN) biomarkers in healthy young and older males. METHODS: Nine young (22 ± 4 yr) and ten older (69 ± 3 yr) males comple
