Methodological issues in behavioral addictions' research: A call for an unbiased analysis of excessive behaviors.

In the psychological literature, there has been a proliferation of new behavioral addictions, often biased by an aprioristic and confirmatory approach that applied the addiction framework without adequately considering other potential explanations of excessive behaviors. This position paper further extends the critiques previously pointed out in the literature by highlighting the methodological issues underlying the current behavioral addiction research and the need for future studies to avoid a confirmatory and aprioristic approach (whatever the etiological hypothesis). Analyzing repetitive b

Behavioral and neurological foundations for the moral and legal implications of intoxication, addictive behaviors and disinhibition.

Disinhibition and addictive behaviors are related and carry moral implications. Both typically involve diminished consideration of negative consequences, which may result in harm to oneself or others. Disinhibition may occur on state and trait levels, and addictive substances may elicit disinhibitory states, particularly when intoxication is reached. Data suggest that trait disinhibition and addictions may be conceptualized as involving misdirected motivation with underlying biological bases including genetic factors, alterations in neurotransmitter systems and differences in regional brain fu

Personality and Behavioral Inhibition/Activation Systems in Behavioral Addiction: Analysis of Binge-Watching.

Binge-watching (BW) refers to a pattern of watching TV series characterized by the consecutive viewing of three or more episodes in one sitting. Although there is some evidence about its effects on mental health, little is known about predictive variables which may affect negative occurrences of BW, such as problematic and addictive behavior. This study aimed to assess the unique contribution of personality traits (i.e., neuroticism, extraversion, agreeableness, openness, and conscientiousness) to binge-watching, while also considering the role of two motivational systems: the behavioral inhib

Addictive behaviors and life problems before and after behavioral treatment of problem drinkers.

The broader impact of a behavioral self-control training intervention focusing on the reduction of alcohol consumption was examined in a sample of 93 problem drinkers (55 male). Individual life problems were assessed via the method of goal attainment scaling before and after treatment and at 3-6 months, 12 months and 24 months following termination. Alcohol and drug use, smoking and weight were also evaluated. At intake, women were more likely than men to be unmarried, married to a problem drinking spouse, or taking psychoactive prescription medication but less likely to be using illicit drugs

Regulating Gambling Use through the Overton Window: From an Addictive Behavior to a Social and Epidemiological Problem.

During the last decade, gambling (online and offline) regulation has become a social and epidemiological problem all around Europe. The aftermaths of this addiction have increased since the so-called "responsible gambling law", in the second decade of the 21st century. The Overton window (OW) strategy is a political theory that describes how the perception of public opinion can be modified so that ideas that are inconceivable for society become accepted over time. The objective of this study is to identify whether an OW has been used to bias the adequacy of the gambling debate, as well as its

Effects of transcranial direct current stimulation on addictive behavior and brain glucose metabolism in problematic online gamers.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Some online gamers may encounter difficulties in controlling their gaming behavior. Previous studies have demonstrated beneficial effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on various kinds of addiction. This study investigated the effects of tDCS on addictive behavior and regional cerebral metabolic rate of glucose (rCMRglu) in problematic online gamers. METHODS: Problematic online gamers were randomized and received 12 sessions of either active (n = 13) or sham tDCS (n = 13) to the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex over 4 weeks (anode F3/cathode F4, 2 mA for

Neuroimaging mechanisms of change in psychotherapy for addictive behaviors: emerging translational approaches that bridge biology and behavior.

Research on mechanisms of behavior change provides an innovative method to improve treatment for addictive behaviors. An important extension of mechanisms of change research involves the use of translational approaches, which examine how basic biological (i.e., brain-based mechanisms) and behavioral factors interact in initiating and sustaining positive behavior change as a result of psychotherapy. Articles in this special issue include integrative conceptual reviews and innovative empirical research on brain-based mechanisms that may underlie risk for addictive behaviors and response to psych

Prevalence and Risk Factors of Addictive and Potentially Addictive Behaviors in Swiss Adults: A Population-Based Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Modern environments expose individuals to stimuli that may promote seemingly harmless, yet potentially addictive behaviors. This study investigated the prevalence, co-occurrence, and risk factors of substance and non-substance addictive behaviors in adults to better inform clinical practice and screening strategies. METHODS: Data were collected from the Specchio digital cohort in Geneva, Switzerland (2023-2024). Addictive and potentially addictive behaviors included smoking, recreational drug use, binge drinking, gambling, excessive leisure screen use, and sugar-sweetened

Beyond 'behavioral addiction': terminology, risk perception, and non-substance addictive disorders in the digital age.

In the digital age, addiction terminology shapes understanding, risk perception, and policy response. The label 'behavioral addiction' may be imprecise because substance-related addictions are also expressed through behavior, and it may blur the distinction between intensive use and clinically significant disorder. This Viewpoint examines this terminological problem and proposes a common addiction framework based on impaired control, persistence despite harm, and functional impairment, while preserving differences in exposure route, harm profile, and regulatory needs. It uses 'non-substance ad

Current interpretations of the I-PACE model of behavioral addictions.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The Interaction of Person-Affect-Cognition-Execution (I-PACE) model of behavioral addictions is used relatively often as a scientific framework to specify research hypotheses and to interpret empirical findings in behavioral addiction research. There are, however, controversial interpretations in the literature regarding some specific elements of the model, which may require a more precise definition of specific constructs and processes that are central to the I-PACE model. METHODS: This is neither a comprehensive literature review nor a proposal for a new version of the

Meta-analysis of structural and functional abnormalities in behavioral addictions.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of behavioral addictions (BAs) associated with scientific and technological advances has been increasing steadily. Unfortunately, a large number of studies on the structural and functional abnormalities have shown poor reproducibility, and it remains unclear whether different addictive behaviors share common underlying abnormalities. Therefore, our objective was to conduct a quantitative meta-analysis of different behavioral addictions to provide evidence-based evidence of common structural and functional changes. METHODS: We conducted systematic searches in PubMed,

Perceptions of the Seriousness of Different Addictive Behaviors in the United Kingdom.

Background: Societal beliefs about the seriousness of different addictions were assessed in the United Kingdom (UK). Methods: An online panel, conducted in 2021 and sampled to be representative of the UK general population 18 years and over (N = 1499), was conducted and asked participants their views regarding the seriousness of different societal problems, including various addictive behaviors. Results: Cannabis was ranked as the least serious of the addictive behaviors. Other illicit drug use (cocaine, amphetamine, heroin) was rated as the most serious of addictive behaviors. None of the add

A NEW DANGER OF BEHAVIORAL ADDICTION: CRYPTOCURRENCY WITH MOBILE INVESTING.

BACKGROUND: Cryptocurrencies are a popular investment tool today. However, some studies highlight the investing behavior of cryptocurrencies similar to pathological gambling. Investing behavior becomes risky when it is not based on proper and adequate analysis and carries the possibility of big losses as well as big gains. For this reason, we aimed to determine the potential risky investor profile by age, gender, personality traits and impulsivity levels. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Six hundred and fifty-four cryptocurrencies investors (529 was male, 125 was female, their mean age was 35.6 ± 9.0) p

Early life stress and the propensity to develop addictive behaviors.

There is a vast literature on effects of early life manipulations in rodents much of which is aimed at investigating the long-term consequences related to emotion and cognition in adulthood. Less is known about how these manipulations affect responses reflective of alcohol (AUD) and substance (SUD) use disorders. The purpose of this paper is to review the literature of studies that employed early life manipulations and assessed behavioral responses to psychoactive substances, specifically alcohol, opiates, and stimulants, in rodents. While the findings with alcohol are more limited and mixed,

Clinical neuropsychiatric considerations regarding nonsubstance or behavioral addictions.

Over the past several decades, non-substance-use behaviors like gambling, gaming, and sex have received greater consideration as possible foci of addictions. In this article, I will review the recent history and current status of non-substance or behavioral addictions. A main focus will involve gambling and gambling disorder, given that the latter is currently the sole non-substance addictive disorder described in the main text of the current (fifth) edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). Internet gaming disorder, currently in the DSM-5 section addressing

Excessive indoor tanning as a behavioral addiction: a literature review.

BACKGROUND: Socially valorized, excessive indoor tanning can lead to dependence. This finding is based on the observations of many dermatologists, who report repeated failures in preventing their patients from visiting tanning cabins, despite the announcement of a diagnosis of malignant melanoma. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this paper is to show that excessive indoor tanning can be included in the spectrum of addictive behavior. This review focuses on the clinical features, diagnosis, prevalence, etiology, treatment, prevention, and psychopathology of this disorder. METHODS: A review of the

Oral health behavior of drug addicts in withdrawal treatment.

BACKGROUND: Oral health behavior (OHB), one major factor contributing to proper oral health status, has been addressed insufficiently in addiction literature. The aim of our study was to investigate OHB and its determinants among drug addicts in withdrawal treatment. METHODS: Through a stratified cluster sampling method, we collected the data from 685 patients in withdrawal treatment in Tehran using self-administered questionnaires on OHB components and conducting interviews about patients' characteristics and addiction history. Open science practices in behavioral addictions: An exploratory survey.

BACKGROUND: The field of behavioral addictions (BA) research addresses activity domains such as excessive gaming, gambling, and other online behaviors that influence public health policies. A failure to embrace open science practices may lead to concerns about the trustworthiness and reliability of its research outputs. This study explored the current use of open science practices among BA researchers, focusing on the adoption, underlying motivations, concerns, and support needs across seven specific open science practices. METHODS: We distributed an exploratory survey through professional ne
