Survey of Behavioral Indices of Welfare in Research Chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) in the United States.

Chimpanzees demand specialized housing and care and the highest degree of attention to animal welfare. The current project used a survey method to collate information on chimpanzee housing and behavioral indices of welfare across all 6 of the chimpanzee research facilities in the United States. Data were compiled on 701 chimpanzees ranging from 2 to 62 y old (mean age, 26.0 y). All chimpanzees except for one were socially housed; the median group size was 7 animals, and group sizes ranged from 1 to 14. All of the subjects had access to outdoor spaces each day. Daily access to a natural substra

Lacking quality in research: Is behavioral neuroscience affected more than other areas of biomedical science?

There are many reasons why novel therapeutics fail in clinical trials but these failures are often attributed to lacking quality of preclinical data. These problems are not limited to any specific therapeutic area, academic or industrial research and are due in large part to several generic factors influencing research quality (e.g., related to definition of pre-specified endpoints, principles of study design and analysis, biased reporting, and lack of proper training). Yet, neuroscience drug discovery is often said to be affected more than the other fields. Within neuroscience, behavioral stu

The prairie vole (Microtus ochrogaster): an animal model for behavioral neuroendocrine research on pair bonding.

Pair bond formation has been investigated much less than many other social behaviors, perhaps in part because traditional laboratory mice and rats do not exhibit this behavior. However, pair bonding is common among monogamous animals such as the prairie vole (Microtus ochrogaster). In this review, we discuss how the prairie vole has been used as a model system to investigate the neurobiology of pair bonding. Descriptions include neuroanatomical differences between monogamous and non-monogamous voles, as well as how manipulations of vasopressin, oxytocin, dopamine, and corticosterone systems af

Behavioral research contributions and needs in cancer prevention and control: tobacco use prevention and cessation.

Following a brief review of the etiology and prevalence of tobacco use and data on the effectiveness of prevention and cessation interventions, recommendations for a research agenda are outlined. It is suggested that research on youth tobacco initiation and cessation be given highest priority because of rising prevalence rates, fundamental social importance, and the widespread support for such efforts. Policy and community approaches to deterring youth tobacco use deserve particular attention. Adult intervention research should focus on health care settings and include factors that both help a

Research on the leaching behavior and morphological transformation of pollutants in the phosphogypsum filling body.

To investigate the environmental risks associated with phosphogypsum (PG) applied for mine backfilling, this paper analyzed the migration characteristics of pollutants (total P, F-, Cr(VI), As, Mn, Se) within PG filling body under different pH and solid-liquid ratio conditions. The research integrated filling body matching experiments, toxic leaching experiments and long-term static immersion experiments. The key findings are summarized as follows: (1) The uniaxial compressive strength of PG filling body at 90d curing age reached 1.27 MPa when the sand-cement ratio was 1:8 and the mass concent

Experimental and numerical research on the anisotropic compressive mechanical behavior of layered rock.

To study the anisotropic mechanical characteristics of layered rock, typical phyllite specimens with bedding plane angles of 0°, 30°, 45°, and 90° were prepared, and triaxial loading and unloading tests under different confining pressures were conducted. Based on the experimental results, the anisotropic mechanical properties and fracture mechanisms of phyllite under different stress paths were analyzed. The results shown that under varying confining pressures, the elastic modulus and compressive strength of phyllite initially decreased and subsequently increased with the increase of bedding p

Mobile payment, digital inclusive finance, and residents' consumption behavior research.

Based on the data of multiple Chinese household finance surveys, the interactive relationship between mobile payment, inclusive digital finance, and household consumption is discussed. It is found that mobile payment can directly and effectively improve household consumption, and the impact on hedonistic and developmental consumption is greater than survival consumption, which is conducive to upgrading household consumption. At the same time, mobile payment can indirectly promote basic and developmental consumer spending through digital inclusive financial mechanisms and weaken hedonistic cons

Effects of air pollution exposure on social behavior: a synthesis and call for research.

BACKGROUND: There is a growing literature from both epidemiologic and experimental animal studies suggesting that exposure to air pollution can lead to neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric disorders. Here, we suggest that effects of air pollutant exposure on the brain may be even broader, with the potential to affect social decision-making in general. METHODS: We discuss how the neurobiological substrates of social behavior are vulnerable to air pollution, then briefly present studies that examine the effects of air pollutant exposure on social behavior-related outcomes. RESULTS: Few expe

Spotlight on Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder: A Systematic Review of Research on Women.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: World Health Organization recently included compulsive sexual behavior disorder (CSBD) to the upcoming 11th edition of International Classification of Diseases (6C72). Despite the potential benefits of this decision (eg, the acceleration of research in the field will allow the development of effective treatments), previous research focused mainly on men, and as a result, we do not have an accurate clinical picture of compulsive sexual behavior (CSB) among women. Therefore, in this systematic review, we aim to present available knowledge on this topical subject. Literature se

A Return to Wisdom: Using Sickness Behaviors to Integrate Ecological and Translational Research.

Sickness is typically characterized by fever, anorexia, cachexia, and reductions in social, pleasurable, and sexual behaviors. These responses can be displayed at varying intensities both within and among individuals, and the adaptive nature of sickness responses can be demonstrated by the context-dependent nature of their expression. The study of sickness has become an important area of investigation for researchers in a wide range of areas, including psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) and ecoimmunology (EI). The general goal of PNI is to identify key interactions among the nervous, endocrine and im

Rounding behavior in the reporting of headache frequency complicates headache chronification research.

OBJECTIVES: To characterize the extent of measurement error arising from rounding in headache frequency reporting (days per month) in a population sample of headache sufferers. BACKGROUND: When reporting numerical health information, individuals tend to round their estimates. The tendency to round to the nearest 5 days when reporting headache frequency can distort distributions and engender unreliability in frequency estimates in both clinical and research contexts. METHODS: This secondary analysis of the 2005 American Migraine Prevalence and Prevention study survey characterized the populat

How are academic age, productivity and collaboration related to citing behavior of researchers?

References are an essential component of research articles and therefore of scientific communication. In this study we investigate referencing (citing) behavior in five diverse fields (astronomy, mathematics, robotics, ecology and economics) based on 213,756 core journal articles. At the macro level we find: (a) a steady increase in the number of references per article over the period studied (50 years), which in some fields is due to a higher rate of usage, while in others reflects longer articles and (b) an increase in all fields in the fraction of older, foundational references since the 19

Bridging the Gap: research informing practice and policy for healthy youth behavior.

BACKGROUND: Bridging the Gap (BTG) is a collaborative research initiative supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Ten years ago, BTG was created to assess the impact of policies, programs, and other environmental influences on adolescent alcohol, tobacco, and illicit drug use and related outcomes. This multidisciplinary, multisite initiative examines these factors at multiple levels of social organization, including schools, communities, and states. More recently, the significant increases in obesity among children, adolescents, and adults led BTG to expand its efforts to include rese

Effects of smoking behavior on lung metastasis in the All of Us Research Program.

Smoking may be associated with an increased risk of lung metastasis in cancers of non-lung origin. We leverage survey and electronic health record data from the diverse All of Us Research Program (AoURP) database to investigate whether smoking and smoking-related behaviors increase the risk of lung metastasis in non-lung primary cancers. The results suggest that cigarette use, measured by four continuous variables, does not increase the risk of lung metastasis in seven common cancer types but demonstrates a small significant effect in a cohort including all types of cancer in the database in b

Research in Brief: Mobile Applications to Promote Sun Protective Behaviors in Adolescents.

Mobile app-based interventions, especially photoaging technologies for sun protective behaviors, are new and promising tools. We conducted a review of published studies to date that evaluate such mobile apps used in pediatric populations, and our analysis highlights short-term improvements in sun-protective behaviors, with over 90% of adolescent users (n = 365) reporting increased motivation to reduce UV exposure and 61.7%-63% of users (n = 205) reporting such apps encouraged them to avoid tanning or improve protection. Limitations of these studies include self-reported outcomes, short follow-

Research on Hysteretic Behavior of FRP-Confined Concrete Core-Encased Rebar.

FRP-confined concrete core-encased rebar (FCCC-R) is a novel composite structure that has recently been proposed to effectively delay the buckling of ordinary rebar and enhance its mechanical properties by utilizing high-strength mortar or concrete and an FRP strip to confine the core. The purpose of this study was to study the hysteretic behavior of FCCC-R specimens under cyclic loading. Different cyclic loading systems were applied to the specimens and the resulting test data were analyzed and compared, in addition to revealing the mechanism of elongation and mechanical properties of the spe
