Influence of disabilities on state-level disparity in dental care utilization and tooth loss: Findings from the 2020 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study is to describe the prevalence of disparity in access to dental care and tooth loss between US adults with and without disabilities at the state level. METHODS: This secondary analysis included data from the 2020 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), a cross-sectional state-run annual telephone survey of noninstitutionalized US adults aged 18 years or older. The primary predictor, having any disability, was defined as reported difficulty in hearing, vision, cognition, mobility, self-care, or independent living. The two dental outcomes used were

Prevalence and predictors of cost-related medication nonadherence in individuals with cardiovascular disease: Results from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) survey.

Medication nonadherence is highly prevalent among patients with chronic cardiovascular disease. Poor adherence has been associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Medication cost is a major driver for medication nonadherence. Utilizing data from the 2016 to 2018 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) survey, we estimated the prevalence of cost-related medication nonadherence (CRMNA) among the overall population and among individuals who reported a history of diabetes, atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), or hypertension. We then performed multivariable logistic r

Physical and Mental Disabilities among the Gender-Diverse Population Using the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, BRFSS (2017-2019): A Propensity-Matched Analysis.

This propensity-matched analysis utilized the publicly available Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (2017-2019) data to compare the burden of disabilities among transgender/non-binary (TGNB) and cisgender groups. The groups were matched (1:1 ratio) on demographic variables using Nearest Neighborhood Matching. Categorical variables were compared among groups using a Chi-square analysis to test differences in the proportions. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was fit to predict the likelihood of the physical and mental disabilities among the TGNB group compared with the cisgender

Association between e-cigarette use and sleep deprivation in U.S. Young adults: Results from the 2017 and 2018 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have assessed the association between e-cigarette use and sleep deprivation. This is an important question given the rapid increase in e-cigarette use among young adults in recent years. PURPOSE: To determine whether e-cigarette use is associated with sleep deprivation in a sample of young (18-24 years-old) American adults. METHODS: We used pooled cross-sectional data from the 2017 and 2018 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), selecting respondents aged 18 to 24 from forty-one states and U.S. territories that included the e-cigarette and sleep modules i

Do age-based discontinuation recommendations influence cervical cancer screening rates? Evidence from the United States' Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, 2016 and 2018.

The United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends that women with adequate prior screening and average cervical cancer risk discontinue routine cervical cancer screening after age 65. This study's objective was to estimate how the USPSTF recommendation affects Papanicolaou (Pap) test rates among women at age 66 in the United States. We used nationally representative 2016 and 2018 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data for women ages 56-76 (n = 226,031) and a regression discontinuity design to estimate changes in annual Pap test rates at age 66. Among women age 66-76

Trends and forecasted rates of adverse childhood experiences among adults in the United States: an analysis of the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System.

CONTEXT: Many studies have shown increases in negative social aspects in the United States that may increase the likelihood of a child experiencing adversity. These rising trends include household dysfunction, poor mental health and substance use, crime rates, and incarceration. Additionally, the pathway of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) may also perpetuate intergenerational trauma. OBJECTIVES: Given these increased trends, our objective was to determine the mean ACEs reported among adults by year of birth to assess trends of ACEs over time. METHODS: To assess ACEs trends in the United

The Relationship Between Social Determinants of Health and Cigarette Smoking Behaviors Among Adults in the United States, Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), 2023.

Social determinants of health (SDoH) comprise a broad array of social conditions, such as access to food and housing, that facilitate or impede individual behavior. The aim of this study was to assess the association between SDoH and cigarette smoking-related outcomes among U.S. adults (aged ≥18 years) by using data from the 2023 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). Cross-sectional data were obtained from the Social Determinants and Health Equity (SD/HE) module, conducted in 33 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico as part of the 2023 BRFSS. Influenza vaccination and use of lipid lowering therapies in adults with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease: An analysis of the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS).

BACKGROUND: Influenza vaccination and lipid lowering therapy (LLT) are evidence-based interventions with substantial benefit for individuals with established atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). However, levels of influenza immunization and LLT use are low, possibly due to pervasive fear-based misinformation uniquely targeting vaccines and LLT. Whether being unvaccinated for influenza predicts lower utilization of LLT is unknown. OBJECTIVES: We tested the hypothesis that American adults with ASCVD who are unvaccinated for influenza have lower use of LLT even after accounting for tr

The association between life satisfaction, emotional support, and perceived health among women who experienced intimate Partner violence (IPV) - 2007 behavioral risk factor surveillance system.

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a pressing phenomenon whose consequences are associated with severe physical and mental health outcomes. Every minute, around 24 people in the United States are raped, physically injured, or emotionally abused by their intimate partner. Although having experienced IPV is not modifiable, emotional support is a protective factor to prevent victims from committing suicide. The psychological state of IPV victims is critical in post-traumatic events and this is evidenced in numerous qualitative interviews. Therefore, the objective of this study is to e

HIV testing and intimate partner violence among non-pregnant women in 15 US states/territories: findings from behavioral risk factor surveillance system survey data.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) has been shown to be associated with higher rates of HIV infection among women, underscoring the importance of encouraging IPV victims to receive HIV testing. However, we do not know how much HIV testing behavior is influenced by IPV victimization. The current study characterized the association between individual types of IPV and HIV testing in a large sample of non-pregnant women in 15 US states/territories. The 2005 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data were analyzed after restricting the sample to non-pregnant women. The dependent variable, whether

Association of physical activity, self-reported health, and endoscopic colorectal screening among US adults age 45-54: evidence from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System.

CONTEXT: Early detection of colon cancer through screening is critical for improving long-term survival outcomes; however, only 54 % of the United States (U.S.) population that is eligible to have a colon cancer screening receive one. Previous research found that people who participate in physical activity (PA) are less likely to get screened due perception of having low risk. However, health organizations have lowered the age to initiate screening as more cases are being reported among younger U.S. residents. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine the association between colon cancer screen
