"Therapeutic" bed rest continues to be used widely, despite evidence of no benefit and known harms. In this commentary, we summarize the Cochrane reviews of bed rest and propose an ethical argument for discontinuing this practice. Cochrane systematic reviews do not support "therapeutic" bed rest for threatened abortion, hypertension, preeclampsia, preterm birth, multiple gestations, or impaired fetal growth. This assessment has been echoed in other comprehensive reviews. Prescribing bed rest is inconsistent with the ethical principles of autonomy, beneficence, and justice. Hence, if bed rest i

According to the seven categories of vulnerability proposed by Kipnis (cognitive, juridical, deferential, medical, allocational, social, and infrastructural), and the four generally accepted principles of biomedical ethics (respect, beneficence, non-maleficence, and fairness), women with obstetric fistulas are an exceptionally vulnerable population. Therefore, they merit special consideration in both clinical care and research settings. Adoption of a formal bill of rights for patients with fistula similar to the one proposed in the present report should be encouraged at all facilities where th

As organizations continue to supplement and replace human management with artificial intelligence (AI), it is essential that we understand the factors that influence employees' trust in AI management. Across one preregistered field study, where we survey 400 delivery riders in Mainland China, and three preregistered experiments (total N = 2,350), we find that AI management is perceived as less benevolent than human management. Given that benevolence is an important antecedent of trust in leaders, this perception has a negative effect on trust in AI management, even when controlling for perceiv

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, some authors have advocated a program of controlled voluntary infection (CVI) with SARS-CoV-2. Under CVI, during periods where the medical system is under capacity, volunteers from low-risk groups would be intentionally infected after giving informed consent, and then quarantined until they have developed immunity. Proponents claim that this could have benefits for society, such as building herd immunity and ensuring that critical workers won't be incapacitated during the peak of the infection. They also claim that this could have benefits for individuals,

This paper explores organ donation through the perspective of Reconstructionist Confucianism. I argue that for organ donation in China to be morally permissible, public policy must conform to the norms of Confucian benevolence. Reconstructionist Confucianism appreciates benevolence as an objectively important feature of morality deeply connected to moral rules governing propriety, integrity, righteousness, and human freedom. Here, benevolence involves sincere affection for another as an intrinsic good, rather than as a means to achieve other purposes. It requires developing self-restraint and

BACKGROUND: The development and evaluation of anti-amyloid beta monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease have been accompanied by extensive ethical debate spanning clinical trials, regulatory processes, prescribing practices, and healthcare delivery. This scoping review examined literature published between 2006 and 2026 to identify and clarify the landscape of ethical considerations surrounding the implementation, prescribing, and delivery of anti-amyloid mAbs across both research and clinical settings.
METHODS: We searched PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase,

Trust in public health authorities is central to effective public health governance, shaping communication, policy implementation, and collective action. Despite its importance, trust has been measured using a wide range of approaches, and comparatively few studies rely on validated instruments, limiting comparability across studies and contexts. This study applies Item Response Theory (IRT) to refine the beneficence dimension of the Trust in Public Health Authorities (TiPHA) Scale, originally developed and validated by Holroyd et al. (2021) using confirmatory factor analysis. Using cross-sect

Prenatal ultrasound is a non-invasive diagnostic examination. Despite the recognized diagnostic value, this technology raises complex ethical questions. The aim of this study is to provide a comprehensive analysis that coherently maps the ethical challenges raised by prenatal ultrasound examination, both 2D and 3D. We performed a systematic literature review. Six databases were systematically searched. The results highlight how concerns related to beneficence, informed consent, and autonomy are mainly related to routine use of prenatal ultrasound in the clinical context, while considerations l

There are no formal publications describing and discussing the various ethical dilemmas encountered when treating dermatologic disease with biologic therapy. Multiple issues such as safety, efficacy, drug accessibility, and cost need to be considered when prescribing biologics. This contribution uses a case-based approach to evaluate the ethical principles involved with biologic therapy.

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is an obsessive-compulsive disease, associated with increased addressability to plastic surgeons; however, as patients perceive body defects due to decreased insight, they are often unsatisfied with their appearance after cosmetic surgery. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the ethical reasoning that should be performed before accepting these patients as cosmetic surgery candidates. We will focus our analysis on three main areas of interest: autonomy, which in these patients is significantly decreased, beneficence as satisfaction, which in these particular

Commentators routinely urge that it is morally permissible forcibly to treat psychiatric patients (1) to preserve the patient's best interests and (2) to restore the patient's autonomy. Such arguments specify duties of beneficence toward others, while appreciating personal autonomy as a positive value to be weighted against other factors. Varying by jurisdiction, legal statutes usually require, in addition, at least (3) that there exists the threat of harm to self or others. In this paper, I argue against embracing the first two elements of this prevailing view. I also argue for a very restric

The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for image-based diagnostics is rising rapidly and enables new opportunities for improving clinical diagnostics through high precision and a quick identification of anomalies. However, a technology characterized by a high variability of image data and the opaqueness of AI models within patient care raises ethical challenges and requires protection by an appropriate ethical and regulatory framework. To identify ethical challenges of the ethical and regulatory framework of the behavioral performance of medical AI systems for image-based diagnostics on the i

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder typically presenting in midlife and leading to death within 2-5 years of onset. Pathogenic SOD1 variants, inherited in an autosomal dominant manner, account for approximately 20% of hereditary ALS cases. Predictive genetic testing in SOD1-related ALS presents unique ethical challenges, particularly in monozygotic twins who share identical genetic information but hold differing views about testing. We describe an 18-year-old monozygotic twin who requested predictive testing for the familial SOD1 pathogenic variant i

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming surgical care, offering unprecedented capabilities in diagnostics, planning, and intraoperative guidance. However, its integration into clinical practice raises complex ethical challenges that must be addressed to ensure responsible and equitable use. This chapter aims to explore the ethical implications of AI in surgery through the lens of the four foundational principles of medical ethics: autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, and justice. Respecting patient autonomy requires clinicians to disclose all relevant information and ensure unde

Anosognosia, a term that denotes a lack of insight into one's own condition, is a defining characteristic of many psychotic illnesses. As a result, generations of psychiatrists have pursued a paternalistic approach to care. Yet in the past century, the overall trend in patient care has been toward autonomy. What does it mean to respect the autonomy of patients whose lack of insight may bring them harm? This chapter will explore these questions through each of the four principles generally employed in bioethical analysis: beneficence, nonmaleficence, justice, and autonomy. Each will have an ill

A core idea underlying nudging is that it helps individuals to achieve their own goals, yet many nudges actually aim at collective goals or specifically target the benefit of others. An example is nudging healthcare workers to be vaccinated against influenza. I distinguish between self-regarding nudges, which primarily benefit the nudgee, and other-regarding nudges, which mainly benefit others, and argue that the default justificatory reason to legitimize self-regarding nudges, namely the 'as judged by themselves' standard, does not apply and that we need to look for other justifications. I ex

The neonatal team attending high-risk deliveries is often faced with difficult ethical decisions concerning aggressive cardiopulmonary resuscitation for infants of 22-24 weeks gestational age (GA). These decisions are often based on the ethical principles of beneficence, nonmaleficence, justice, futility, autonomy, quality of life, and best interests and legal rights of the infant. Three delivery room recommendations are discussed along with their legal and ethical considerations. The perinatal and neonatal intensive care nurse must understand the moral, ethical, legal, and professional respon

Due to an increasing number of major weight loss after bariatic surgery, the demand for body-coutouring surgery increase in paralell. Among all the technics which can be realized, brachioplastyis one of them. The goal is to reach a functionnal but an aesthetic improvement too. The literature show that the rate of major complication is very low (or not reported in the majority of the series). Minor complication is more common : hypertrophic scar, large scar, paresthesia, and wound dehiscence. Re-operation can be asked by the patient in order to improve the result. The practice of genetic counselling gives rise to many ethical dilemmas, and counsellors need to be familiar with the principles of biomedical ethics. The primary principles include respect for autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence and justice. A case of identical twins at 50% risk for Huntington's disease, in which only one twin sought predictive testing for this dominantly inherited disease, created several ethical dilemmas. Another case where predictive testing was carried out on two young children, at high risk, by a laboratory at the request of an adoption agency and a doctor, with a vie
