Benign Peripheral Paroxysmal Vertigo is a disease of the posterior labyrinth caused by endolymphatic debris, provoking vertigo with some movements of the head. Diagnosis is usually made by finding the positional nystagmus with appropriate manoeuvres. Spontaneous resolution is frequent and in these cases diagnosis is only probable and suspected from anamnesis. Aim of the present investigation was to establish more evaluation parameters in the study of Benign Peripheral Paroxysmal Vertigo. A series of 97 selected patients presenting Benign Peripheral Paroxysmal Vertigo, have been submitted to si

We evaluated a new therapeutic maneuver-Prolonged Position on the healthy side, for Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) of the horizontal semicircular canal. We devised this type of physical treatment in accordance with the "canalolithiasis" theory of BPPV, in order to try to free the horizontal semicircular canal of otoconial debris. We compared the results obtained by Prolonged Position with two other physical therapies by dividing our horizontal canal BPPV patients into three therapeutic groups: 1) 35 patients treated with Prolonged Position; 2) 24 patients treated with head shaking

The benign paroxystic positional vertigo (BPPV) is defined by brief attacks of rotational vertigo and concomitant rotatory-linear nystagmus, triggered by rapid extension and by lateral head tilt toward the affected ear. Cupulolithiasis of the posterior semi-circular canal from one inner ear is responsible of this peculiar type of positional vertigo. Definition diagnostic criteria are based upon the time history of the burst of rotational vertigo associated with the typical positioning nystagmus induced by rapid position changes from the setting to the head hanging right or left position during

In 1980, the Research Committee of Peripheral Vestibular Disorders in Japan, which is supported by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, was founded by 24 members, from several districts in Japan. The Committee's first task was to draft the diagnostic criteria for several peripheral vestibular disorders, such as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), and vestibular neuronitis. For the national epidemiological survey, they then collected the data on 101 cases of BPPV out of some 783 vestibular disorder patients. In addition, data on 103 patients of BPPV out of 559 vestibular disorder patien

OBJECTIVE: One of the clinical characteristics of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is that the more quickly the head position changes, the more severe the vertigo. This suggests that the velocity of the head change is critical in determining the occurrence and severity of vertigo. The aim of this study was to examine factors determining the symptoms of BPPV using models of canalolithiasis and cupulolithiasis.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Canalolithiasis and cupulolithiasis models were prepared using the bullfrog posterior semicircular canal (PSC). The ampullary nerve discharges were compa

Involvement of the superior semicircular canal (SSC) in benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is rare. SSC BPPV is distinguished from the more common posterior semicircular canal (PSC) variant by the pattern of nystagmus triggered by the Dix-Hallpike position: down-beating torsional nystagmus in SSC BPPV versus up-beating torsional nystagmus in PSC BPPV. SSC BPPV may be readily treated at the bedside, which is a key component in excluding central causes of down-beating nystagmus. We present an unusual video case report believed to represent refractory SSC BPPV based on the pattern of nys

OBJECTIVE: Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo is the most common peripheral vestibular disorder. It can recur despite successful maneuvers. While various risk factors for recurrence have been investigated, these remain controversial. The aim of this study was to identify potential risk factors for benign paroxysmal positional vertigo recurrence and contribute to the development of preventive treatment strategies.
METHODS: The study involved 301 patients who presented to our clinic with dizziness and were diagnosed with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo between December 2019 and May 2022.

Positional vertigo manifests as a spinning sensation triggered by changes in head position relative to gravity. Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is an inner ear disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of positional vertigo. The connection between vitamin D insufficiency/deficiency and the onset and recurrence of BPPV is established. This study aims to assess vitamin D as a recurring factor in BPPV and the efficacy of vitamin D supplementation in preventing its recurrence. A comprehensive literature review on the relationship between vitamin D and BPPV recurrence was conducted,

INTRODUCTION: Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is an inner ear disorder with a heterogeneous etiology, often linked to preceding infections, head injuries, or vestibular neuronitis. While it is commonly observed in the elderly, its occurrence in the pediatric population is rare. To our knowledge, there have been no reported cases of BPPV in patients younger than 5 years.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 4.5-month-old female infant was admitted with episodes of paroxysmal nystagmus. Parents reported fast horizontal eye movements lasting up to 30 s, with one episode accompanied by vomiting. Comp

The current theory in physiopathology of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo is the mechanical theory, namely the cupulolithiasis-canalolithiasis theory. Repositioning maneuvers based on this theory has now taken place in therapy. However, mechanical theory is insufficient to explain some clinical situations and cannot fully enlighten the physiopathology. Mechanical theory is based on very few histological studies. Currently, these few articles are still used for reference. Anatomically, there are uncertainties that need to be explained in this theory. In this literature review, the histologi

This report aimed to investigate the relationship after successful left-sided stapedotomy and postoperative benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) due to vitamin D deficiency. A 56-year-old woman presented with a complaint of progressive hearing loss and tinnitus in the left ear without dizziness. A successful left-sided stapedotomy was performed, confirming the diagnosis of otosclerosis and closing the air-bone gap to less than 10 dB. Seven days after the stapedotomy, the patient reported dizziness, usually when turning to her left side in the bed. An electrophysiological assessment was

OBJECTIVES: Head trauma may cause dislodgement of otoconia and development of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). The risk of developing BPPV is expected to be highest shortly after the trauma, then decrease and approach the risk seen in the general population. The aim of this study was to estimate the risk-time curve of BPPV development after head trauma.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective observational study.
METHODS: Patients with minimal, mild, or moderate head trauma treated at the Department of Neurosurgery or the Department of Orthopedic Emergency at Oslo University Hospital, were int

OBJECTIVES: Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is a disorder of the inner ear with a high rate of recurrence. Vascular disorders, migraine and autoimmune disorders have been considered facilitating factors for relapsing episodes. Our aim was to assess the role of vascular disorders, migraine and anti-thyroid antibodies in patients with recurrences.
METHODS: We retrospectively analysed records of 3042 patients treated for BPPV without other lifetime vertigo. Clinical data included previous vascular disorders of the central nervous system, heart disorders, migraine and recent head trau
