Beauty bias in butterfly research and conservation.

Conservation biases have been documented since the first emergence of the concept of biodiversity in the 1980s,1,2,3 showing a systematic disproportion in the allocation of research and conservation efforts among taxa.4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11 One factor underlying this disproportion, gaining prominence in recent literature, is species' perceived beauty, shaped by human visual preferences.12,13,14,15,16,17 Here, we integrate a large-scale survey of the perceived beauty of European butterflies yielding >21,000 survey completions from >100 countries into a time-explicit network linking species' beauty,

Ligand bias in the EGF receptor system.

The epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptor is a canonical receptor tyrosine kinase with an extracellular ligand-binding domain, a single-pass transmembrane domain and an intracellular kinase domain. Binding of an agonist ligand leads to the dimerization of the receptor and activation of its tyrosine kinase activity. This results in autophosphorylation of the receptor on its C-terminal tail and the activation of downstream signalling pathways that mediate the intracellular effects of the agonist. The receptor binds seven different ligands. Structural studies have shown that the ligands bind to

The Survivorship Bias in Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia.

Current literature for congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) focuses on the comparison of the overall mortality in CDH patients. Only a few studies concentrate on analyzing the unstable patients who could not achieve surgical repair, as well as those who could but did not survive after. Hence, this study aimed to analyze the effects of various parameters on the timing of death. A retrospective analysis was performed by using the data of all CDH patients from 2003 to 2016 at a single tertiary center. Patients who were diagnosed with left-sided CDH and expired were included in the study regardle

Bias in Estimation of a Mixture of Normal Distributions.

Estimating parameters in a mixture of normal distributions dates back to the 19th century when Pearson originally considered data of crabs from the Bay of Naples. Since then, many real world applications of mixtures have led to various proposed methods for studying similar problems. Among them, maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) and the continuous empirical characteristic function (CECF) methods have drawn the most attention. However, the performance of these competing estimation methods has not been thoroughly studied in the literature and conclusions have not been consistent in published re

Belief bias and the extinction of induced fear.

Some people show slower extinction of UCS expectancies than other people. Little is known about what predicts such delayed extinction. Extinction requires that people deduce the logical implication of corrective experiences challenging the previously learned CS-UCS contingency. "A strong habitual tendency to confirm beliefs" may therefore be a powerful mechanism immunising against refutation of UCS expectancies. This study investigated whether individual differences in such a belief confirming tendency (a process called "belief bias") may help in explaining individual differences in extinction

Negativity bias in attribution of external agency.

This research investigated whether people are more likely to attribute events to external agents when events are negative rather than neutral or positive. Participants more often believed that ultimatum game partners were humans rather than computers when the partners offered unusually unfavorable divisions than unusually favorable divisions (Experiment 1A), even when their human partners had no financial stake in the game (Experiment 1B). In subsequent experiments, participants were most likely to infer that gambles were influenced by an impartial participant when the outcomes of those gamble

A specific attentional bias in panic disorder?

According to cognitive theories, panic patients are assumed to have an attentional bias toward bodily sensations. To date, there is only some indirect evidence of such a bias measured by an emotional Stroop task. Moreover, the content and disorder specificity of this bias is rather unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the specificity of attentional bias in patients with panic disorder (PD). Patients with PD (n=32), patients with mixed anxiety disorders (n=25), and a healthy control group (n=26) performed an emotional Stroop task with three word types: panic threat, general threat,

Environmental risk assessment and the intrusion of bias.

The concept of managing the environment and any associated human health impacts by means of such science-based tools as toxicological evaluation, risk assessment, and economic appraisal has become widely accepted in professional circles. These increasingly complex methodologies have not won universal support, however, even among the technically minded, and the wider public has in many cases remained sceptical. The public's seeming lack of enthusiasm has frequently been assigned to ignorance of science, irrationality even, and some attempts have been made to ameliorate the situation by means of

Nonselection and nonresponse bias in clinical research.

In summary, nonselection and nonresponse bias can have a potent impact on the validity of clinical veterinary research studies and should be carefully assessed by investigators and readers. The risk of nonselection and nonresponse bias has been compared to "lowering yourself into a dark pit and trusting you won't be bitten by a snake ... before you go into the pit, you should stand outside and listen for a hissing sound ... if you hear one, do not go on ... if you do not hear anything, you may proceed with caution, being confident that at worst you will be bitten by a quiet snake."

Developmental determinants of male bias in medulloblastoma.

Boys experience an overall increased incidence of several childhood cancers, including medulloblastoma, a clinically heterogeneous cerebellar tumor. In subtypes of Group 3 and Group 4 medulloblastoma, males are three times more prevalent than females. As medulloblastoma is suspected to initiate during fetal development, we hypothesized that this sex bias reflects a combination of prenatal, sex-specific developmental processes and somatic alterations. To test these hypotheses, we compiled a large multi-omics dataset from children with medulloblastoma, which revealed sex-specific alterations, in

Dynamics of variability and bias in working memory.

Visual working memory performance declines with the quantity of material stored and the duration of its maintenance, but it is disputed whether these constraints are independent or interact. Specifically, different studies have reached contradictory conclusions on whether greater memory load accelerates deterioration of the stored information during retention, a question with implications for storage mechanisms. Meanwhile, prominent models of visual working memory based on stable attractors predict that recall should become increasingly biased toward a fixed set of canonical features with long

Bias in neuromodulation studies on chronic pain.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: While bias is an integral part of human behavior, bias in clinical research studies may lead to erroneous study conclusions and potentially negative consequences affecting medical care. Bias may influence multiple stages of clinical research and is remarkably prevalent in industry-sponsored studies. Particularly challenging are neuromodulation studies involving patients with chronic pain, whereby industry sponsorship, physicians' conflicts of interest, and patient factors collide to create a highly complex medium that renders clinical research design and interpretation very

[Breast implant and cancer, BIA-ALC].

In the absence of evidence regarding the diagnosis and management of LAGC-AIM caused by textured breast implants, this article aims to provide recommendations based, on the one hand, on updated data from the literature, and on the other hand, on the experience gained in the management and treatment of patients within the French LAGC-AIM study group. A search was carried out in the MEDLINE and Cochrane databases, supplemented by manual searches for relevant articles in English. Studies on breast surgery and breast implant-associated lymphoma were included. The most convincing articles were inte

COVID-19 and the Consequences of Anchoring Bias.

Suspicion of coronavirus disease in febrile patients might lead to anchoring bias, causing misdiagnosis of other infections for which epidemiologic risks are present. This bias has potentially severe consequences, illustrated by cases of human granulocytic anaplasmosis and Lyme disease in a pregnant woman and human granulocytic anaplasmosis in another person.

Measurement of PET Quantitative Bias In Vivo.

Quantitative imaging biomarkers are widely used in PET for both research and clinical applications, yet bias in the underlying image data has not been well characterized. In the absence of a readily available reference standard for in vivo quantification, bias in PET images has been inferred using physical phantoms, even though arrangements of this sort provide only a poor approximation of the imaging environment in real patient examinations. In this study, we used data acquired from patient volunteers to assess PET quantitative bias in vivo. Image-derived radioactivity concentrations in the d

Avoiding Anchoring Bias in the Times of the Pandemic!

COVID-19 has a broad spectrum of clinical presentations, including central nervous system manifestations that are not uncommon. The high pretest probability of COVID-19 in pandemic can lead to anchoring. We present a patient of COVID-19 pneumonia who presented with dyspnea and acute confusional state. His initial workup was suggestive of tuberculous meningoencephalitis with lymphocytic pleocytosis, high protein in CSF analysis, and suspicious MRI findings, which was later confirmed with a positive CSF culture. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first such case. Anchoring to the diagnosis

Accuracy and bias in retrospective symptom reporting.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Self-reported bodily symptoms are of primary importance in healthcare and in health-related research. Typically, they are assessed in clinical interviews or by means of traditional questionnaire formats that require the respondent to provide retrospective symptom estimates rated along intuitive frequency and/or intensity standards and aggregated across varying or unspecified time windows. RECENT FINDINGS: Retrospective symptom assessments are often biased when compared to (averaged) momentary assessments of symptoms. A variety of factors and conditions have been identified
