Local and network-level dysregulation of error processing is associated with binge drinking.

Binge drinking refers to the pattern of alcohol consumption that brings blood alcohol levels to or above legal intoxication levels. Commonly practiced by young adults, it is associated with neurofunctional alterations, raising health-related concerns. Executive deficits may contribute to the inability to refrain from excessive alcohol intake. As a facet of cognitive control, error processing allows for flexible modification of behavior to optimize future outcomes. It is highly relevant to addiction research, as a failure to inhibit excessive drinking results in relapses, which is a hallmark of

Employment insecurity and binge drinking in the United States: Implications of unemployment insurance.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine whether employment transitions are associated with within-person variation in binge drinking and whether unemployment insurance may buffer this risk. METHODS: Using 19 waves of data from the Understanding America Study (May 2020-March 2021; N = 1710) in the United States, mixed-effects models examined within-person associations between employment transitions and binge drinking days. Postestimation contrasts evaluated restorative changes associated with upward employment transitions. RESULTS: Shifts from secure employment to underemployment (β = 0.033, p

The Impacts of Binge Drinking and Hangover on the Social Brain: An Integrative Narrative Review.

Binge drinking is defined as consuming a large amount of alcohol in a short period of time, whereas hangover is a cluster of unpleasant mental symptoms and physical signs that typically manifest the next day after binge drinking. Binge drinking is a prevalent pattern of alcohol consumption, especially in adolescents, with dualistic effects on social behavior. While some studies demonstrate that a single episode of binge drinking enhances sociability and preference for social novelty, other studies indicate that repeating cycles of binge drinking and hangover can lead to persistent negative aff

Method of accessing alcohol and binge drinking status in youth and young adults.

AIMS: The study investigated relationships between how youth and young adults access alcohol and their binge drinking behaviors. METHODS: Data from the Rhode Island Student Survey (11- to 18-year-olds) and the Mobile Screen Time project (18- to 24-year-old) were included. Participants were asked whether they access alcohol through several different methods (e.g. gifts, purchase, theft), and a latent class analysis was conducted to identify patterns of behavior. Logistic regression models were used to determine if class assignment was associated with binge drinking, after adjusting for age, se

Areas of Convergence and Divergence in Adolescent Social Isolation and Binge Drinking: A Review.

Adolescence is a critical developmental period characterized by enhanced social interactions, ongoing development of the frontal cortex and maturation of synaptic connections throughout the brain. Adolescents spend more time interacting with peers than any other age group and display heightened reward sensitivity, impulsivity and diminished inhibitory self-control, which contribute to increased risky behaviors, including the initiation and progression of alcohol use. Compared to adults, adolescents are less susceptible to the negative effects of ethanol, but are more susceptible to the negativ

The Effects of Individual and Dual ACE Domains on Binge Drinking: Comparisons by Gender.

BACKGROUND: Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) show predictive utility concerning binge drinking. However, the literature is limited by 1. a focus on cumulative ACEs with little regard to specific domains, 2. a focus on those with the highest ACE scores, and 3. little consideration for gender differences. These approaches are problematic as ACE categories are fundamentally different, yet little distinction is given to specific ACE domains. The current study investigates which individual and dual ACE domain combinations are associated with binge drinking. METHODS: Data were obtained from the

Methylation of OPRL1 mediates the effect of psychosocial stress on binge drinking in adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Nociceptin is a key regulator linking environmental stress and alcohol drinking. In a genome-wide methylation analysis, we recently identified an association of a methylated region in the OPRL1 gene with alcohol-use disorders. METHODS: Here, we investigate the biological basis of this observation by analysing psychosocial stressors, methylation of the OPRL1 gene, brain response during reward anticipation and alcohol drinking in 660 fourteen-year-old adolescents of the IMAGEN study. We validate our findings in marchigian sardinian (msP) alcohol-preferring rats that are genetically

Binge drinking in alcohol-preferring sP rats at the end of the nocturnal period.

Sardinian alcohol-preferring (sP) rats have been selectively bred for high alcohol preference and consumption using the standard 2-bottle "alcohol (10%, v/v) vs. water" choice regimen with unlimited access; under this regimen, sP rats daily consume 6-7 g/kg alcohol. The present study assessed a new paradigm of alcohol intake in which sP rats were exposed to the 4-bottle "alcohol (10%, 20%, and 30%, v/v) vs. water" choice regimen during one of the 12 h of the dark phase of the daily light/dark cycle; the time of alcohol exposure was changed daily in a semi-random order and was unpredictable to

In with the old and out with the new? A comparison of the old and new binge drinking standards.

BACKGROUND: There is consistent evidence that the binge drinking standard of 5+ drinks per drinking occasion for men (4+ for women) is associated with risk for negative consequences. Yet, many have questioned the adequacy of this measure as an index of intoxication (e.g., a blood alcohol concentration [BAC] of 0.08 g%). In response to these concerns, a National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism task force recommended adding a time qualifier of 2 hours to this criterion. Although conceptually appealing, there has been little effort to determine whether this new measure better captures d

The prevalence of binge drinking and receipt of provider drinking advice among US veterans with military service in Iraq or Afghanistan.

BACKGROUND: Binge drinking is a significant public health concern linked to a number of health and psychosocial problems. Military service in Afghanistan (OEF) and Iraq (OIF) has been associated with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and increased hazardous drinking. Brief alcohol interventions may reduce hazardous drinking but are infrequently provided to at-risk drinkers. OBJECTIVES: This study examined the association of combat exposure, PTSD symptoms, binge drinking, use of VA and non-VA healthcare services, and the incidence of provider drinking advice. METHODS: OEF/OIF veterans (n =

Lateral hypothalamus CRFR1 regulation of chronic binge drinking: divergence along anterior-posterior axis.

Binge alcohol drinking increases the risk of developing an alcohol use disorder (AUD) and comorbid psychopathology. The lateral hypothalamus (LH) is a brain structure that integrates cognitive and sensory information to tightly regulate motivated behavior, including binge drinking. Importantly, LH function is vulnerable to modulation by the pro-stress neuropeptide corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF), and acute antagonism of CRF receptor 1 (CRFR1) in the LH blunts binge drinking. However, the role of LH CRFR1 in chronic binge drinking is unknown. We used genetically targeted knockdown (KD) of

Persistent inflammation does not promote aversion-resistant binge-like alcohol drinking in rats.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain is a leading cause of disability, significantly decreases quality of life, and is highly co-morbid with substance use disorders, including alcohol use disorder (AUD). This is due, in part, to the pain-relieving effects of alcohol acting as a potential driving force for the progression and maintenance of AUD. Despite a substantial body of historic, anecdotal, clinical, and epidemiological evidence supporting the analgesic efficacy of alcohol, few preclinical studies have investigated the effects of pain on volitional alcohol drinking. Further, no studies to date have in

Sex differences in nucleus accumbens core circuitry engaged by binge-like ethanol drinking.

Growing parity in Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) diagnoses in men and women necessitates consideration of sex as a biological variable. In humans and rodents, the nucleus accumbens core (NAcc) regulates alcohol binge drinking, a risk factor for developing AUD. We labeled NAcc inputs with a viral retrograde tracer and quantified whole-brain c-Fos to determine the regions and NAcc inputs differentially engaged in male and female mice during binge-like ethanol drinking. We found that binge-like ethanol drinking females had 129 brain areas with greater c-Fos than males. Moreover, ethanol engaged more

A dual treatment blocks alcohol binge-drinking relapse: Microbiota as a new player.

RATIONALE: Gut microbiota communicates information to the brain. Some animals are born with a gut microbiota that predisposes to high alcohol consumption, and transplantation of fecal material from alcoholics to mice increases animal preference for ethanol. Alcohol-use-disorders are chronic conditions where relapse is the hallmark. A predictive animal model of relapse is the "alcohol deprivation effect" where ethanol re-access is allowed following chronic alcohol intake and a long alcohol deprivation. The present study evaluates the effect of gut microbiota modification on relapse, as an adjun

Relationship between Depressive Symptoms, Personality, and Binge Drinking among University Students in Spain.

Binge drinking (BD) is a common practice among college students. Alcohol consumption has been related to depressive symptoms and certain personality factors, although less is known about the relationship of these variables with BD. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship of BD with depressive symptoms and personality in university students. We performed a cross-sectional study among students (aged 18-30 years) enrolled in the academic year 2018-2019 at the Faculty of Nursing of the University of Cantabria (Spain). Sociodemographic, academic, and alcohol and other drug use informa

Ganoderma lucidum Ameliorates Neurobehavioral Changes and Oxidative Stress Induced by Ethanol Binge Drinking.

Ganoderma lucidum, mushroom used for centuries by Asian peoples as food supplement, has been shown interesting biological activities, including over the Central Nervous System. Besides, these mushroom bioactive compounds present antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. On the side, binge drinking paradigm consists of ethanol exposure that reflects the usual consumption of adolescents, which elicits deleterious effects, determined by high ethanol consumption, in a short period.
