Binge eating disorder in males: a population-based investigation.

The authors investigated the prevalence of binge eating behavior in a general male Austrian population. A randomly selected sample of 1000 male adults aged 18 to 88 was interviewed by dieticians over the phone. Some screening instruments were used to detect binge eating behavior. The results showed a total prevalence of eating disorders of 14.9%. Eight subjects (0.8%) met the full diagnostic criteria for binge eating disorder (BED), 42 (4.2%) exhibited a partial binge eating syndrome, 94 (9.4%) an Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified, and five subjects (0.5%) a bulimia nervosa. Most subject

Psychological treatment of bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder.

The field of eating disorders has grown rapidly, amassing an impressive body of treatment research in the past 20 years. In particular, researchers have focused on binge eating problems, which include bulimia nervosa (BN) and the more recently recognized binge eating disorder (BED). Numerous controlled treatment trials have shown cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) to be equally or more efficacious than any other BN treatment to which it has been compared. Although CBT also seems to be effective for BED, research is in a preliminary stage. Further combinations and adaptations of treatments for

The role of the intestinal microbiota in eating disorders - bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder.

Bulimia nervosa (BN) and binge eating disorder (BED) are both eating disorders (EDs) characterised by episodes of overeating in which large amounts of food are consumed in short periods. The aetiology of BN and BED is not fully understood. Psychological and social factors influence the development of BN and BED, but biological factors such as neurohormones that regulate hunger and satiety, or neurotransmitters responsible for mood and anxiety play a significant role in sustaining symptoms. Increasing numbers of studies confirm the relationship between the composition of intestinal microbiota a

Reliability of the original and brief versions of the Eating Disorder Examination in binge-eating disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Psychometric studies evaluating the reliability of eating-disorder assessment among individuals with binge-eating disorder (BED) have been limited. The current study documents the interrater reliability and internal consistency of the Eating Disorder Examination (EDE) interview when administered to adults with Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (Fifth Edition) (DSM-5)-defined BED. METHODS: Participants (N = 56) were adults seeking treatment for BED in the context of clinical trials testing pharmacological and psychological treatments. Doctoral-level, trained, and

Relationship between psychopathology and binge size in binge eating spectrum disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Food intake during binge eating episodes (BEE) has been found to be associated with symptoms of depression and anxiety in individuals with eating disorders (EDs). The objective of this study was to evaluate the association between caloric intake during BEE and psychopathology in individuals with binge eating spectrum disorders (BSD). METHODS: One-hundred and fourteen outpatients diagnosed with bulimia nervosa (BN) and binge eating disorder (BED) were sequentially assessed. The Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview Plus (MINI PLUS) was used to assess psychiatric diagnoses. V

A characterization of binge planning behavior in individuals with binge-spectrum eating disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Although binge eating is associated with impulsivity, clinical reports suggest that some individuals with bulimia nervosa (BN) and binge eating disorder (BED) plan binge episodes in advance. This study is the first to examine: (1) the frequency of binge planning (BP; defined as both advanced knowledge that a binge episode will occur and taking steps to facilitate the binge episode); (2) associations of BP with ED severity, and (3) whether BP serves a negative reinforcement function. METHOD: Patients with BN- and BED-spectrum eating disorders (EDs; n = 111) were administered semi-st

Patterns of food selection during binges in women with binge eating disorder.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine whether temporal patterns of food selection during binges in obese subjects with binge eating disorder (BED) differ from those of patients with bulimia nervosa (BN). METHOD: Ten obese women with BED and 10 weight-matched women without BED each consumed a multiple-item meal identical to that used in previous studies with bulimics, and all subjects were instructed to binge. An experimenter recorded the subjects' food choices every 10 s throughout the meal via a closed-circuit TV camera. RESULTS: Subjects with BED consumed significantly more mea

Emotional overeating and its associations with eating disorder psychopathology among overweight patients with binge eating disorder.

OBJECTIVE: The current study examined emotional overeating in overweight patients with binge eating disorder (BED). A new measure--the Emotional Overeating Questionnaire (EOQ)--was developed to measure the frequency of overeating in response to emotions. The internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and factor structure of this measure were examined, and its associations with eating disorder psychopathology, depression, and gender were explored. METHOD: Two hundred twenty consecutive overweight (body mass index [BMI] > or = 25) treatment-seeking BED patients (48 men and 172 women) were a

GLP-1 receptor agonists: A novel pharmacotherapy for binge eating (Binge eating disorder and bulimia nervosa)? A systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Systematically review evidence on using GLP-1RAs for reducing BEB in BED and BN. METHODS: Comprehensive literature search (PubMed and Google Scholar) conducted for studies evaluating GLP-1Ras for BEB. Extracted data on study characteristics, efficacy, and safety. RESULTS: Studies show that GLP-1RAs (liraglutide and dulaglutide) reduce BE frequency and comorbidities in addition to favorable psychiatric side effect profile compared to current options. However, large-scale, blinded placebo-controlled trials are lacking. CONCLUSION: Early findings suggest promising effects of GLP-1RA

[Impulsivity-focused Group Intervention to reduce Binge Eating Episodes in Patients with Binge Eating Disorder - A Group Training Program].

Binge Eating Disorder (BED) is an eating disorder where cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) could already show reliable efficacy. Relying on basic research, CBT interventions which especially focus on impulsivity could be effective, because binge eating episodes represent highly impulsive eating behaviour. For this reason, we developed a treatment concept about an impulsivity-focused behavioural group intervention for patients with BED, called IMPULS. The efficacy of IMPULS is currently investigated in a randomised controlled trial 1. IMPULS is drafted as a weekly group training programme with

Characterising binge eating over the course of a feasibility trial among individuals with binge eating disorder and bulimia nervosa.

Binge eating disorder and bulimia nervosa are eating disorders that are characterized by recurrent binge eating episodes. The highly contextualized nature of binge eating makes naturalistic research a particularly suitable means of understanding the context within which binge eating occurs. The present study aimed to characterise binge eating days with regards to the frequency and probability of negative affect, food craving, meal skipping, and dietary restriction. In addition, it aimed to examine whether a combined intervention that targets the experience of 'loss of control' over eating can

Naltrexone Reduces Binge Eating and Purging in Adolescents in an Eating Disorder Program.

Objective: Little evidence exists for pharmacologic treatment of binge eating and purging in adolescents with eating disorders. Given the role of the opioid reward system in compulsive binge eating and purging, naltrexone, an opioid antagonist, may be effective in reducing these behaviors. Previous studies have demonstrated that naltrexone reduces binge eating and purging in adults, yet evidence for its use in adolescents is lacking. This case series describes naltrexone utilization, response, and safety in adolescents with eating disorders. Methods: A retrospective chart review of adolescent

[Eating disorders in childhood and adolescence. Anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder].

The most important eating disorders are anorexia and bulimia, which most frequently occur for the first time during adolescence and continue into adulthood. Medical complications and accompanying psychological disturbances cause a significant mortality rate of up to 6% in anorexia and up to 3% in bulimia. The pathogenesis of eating disorders is still unclear. Current etiological concepts are multidimensional including biological, individual, familial, and sociocultural factors. In spite of a great variety of therapeutic possibilities, the prognosis for eating disorders is quite poor. In the lo

Which factors do provoke binge eating? An exploratory study in eating disorder patients.

OBJECTIVE: To study the different factors (external, emotional, cognitive, and physiological) which may trigger binge eating in eating disorder patients and to make a comparison of binge eating triggers in different eating disorder samples, i.e. anorexia nervosa bingeing-purging type and bulimia nervosa (BN). METHOD: A total of 242 eating disorder patients filled out the Binge Eating Trigger Checklist (BETCH), a new screening device to evaluate the type of situations (and their experienced discomfort) which subjects identify as antecedents of a binge eating episode. RESULTS: Eating disorder

The effect of suppressing negative emotions on eating behavior in binge eating disorder.

Overeating may be a consequence of the suppression of negative emotions, by depleting self-control resources. This experiment investigated whether (a) there is a causal relationship between the suppression of negative emotions, negative mood, and overeating in people with binge eating disorder (BED) and whether (b) this relationship is increased in depressed people with BED. Sixty-six women with (full and sub-threshold) BED were shown an upsetting movie and then asked either to suppress their emotions or to react naturally. Subsequently, everyone participated in a taste task. After a decline,

The diagnostic validity of the criteria for binge eating disorder.

OBJECTIVE: This paper considers whether the criteria currently used to classify the diagnosis of binge eating disorder (BED) are valid and appropriate. METHOD: We review evidence that reflects on the validity of the current criteria for binge eating episodes and BED, using literature retrieved through major psychology and psychiatry search engines (e.g., PsycInfo, PubMed). RESULTS: Evidence from experimental research points to the relative importance of episode frequency, the amount of food consumed at episodes, the subjective sense of loss of control over eating, and several additional crit

Negative affect and binge eating: Assessing the unique trajectories of negative affect before and after binge-eating episodes across eating disorder diagnostic classifications.

OBJECTIVE: Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) studies suggest that among individuals who binge eat, emotional states and binge eating are functionally related. However, it is unclear whether the trajectory of negative affect (NA) is the same across diagnostic groups or if specific changes in affect are unique to each diagnostic category. This study examined the moderating effect of diagnosis on the trajectory of negative affect before and after binge eating.
