Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a growing global health concern, with significant economic implications. Bioactive peptides (BAPs) produced by in vitro simulated digestion (IVSD) can be safe and cost-effective alternatives to pharmacological treatments. These peptides act holistically by inhibiting key enzymes, enhancing insulin sensitivity, and restoring β-cell functions. Although the efficacy of IVSD-derived peptides has been validated through in vitro, in vivo, and in silico assays, translating these findings into therapeutic medicine faces several challenges, from limited clinical trial

Hyperlipidemia (HLP) is a metabolic disorder caused by abnormal lipid metabolism. Recently, the prevalence of HLP caused by poor dietary habits in the population has been increasing year by year. In addition, lipid-lowering drugs currently in clinical use have shown significant improvement in blood lipid levels, but are accompanied by certain side effects. However, bioactive marine substances have been shown to possess a variety of physiological activities such as hypoglycemic, antioxidant, antithrombotic and effects on blood pressure. Therefore, the hypolipidemic efficacy of marine bioactive

Bovine milk contains bioactive proteins and encrypted peptide sequences whose abundance and availability may change during mammary or systemic inflammation. This narrative review critically evaluates evidence associated with subclinical mastitis, lameness-causing claw disorders, and periparturient metabolic disorders. Direct milk-level evidence is strongest for mastitis: increased somatic cell count and intramammary inflammation are generally associated with higher concentrations of milk haptoglobin, milk serum amyloid A (including mammary-associated serum amyloid A3, when isoform-resolved), l

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that primarily affects the elderly, leading to severe cognitive decline and loss of autonomy. The accumulation of amyloid-β peptides and tau proteins in the brain is considered the central pathogenic mechanism, which results in neuronal dysfunction and cell death. Various metabolic disruptions, such as chronic oxidative stress and inflammatory processes, further exacerbate the progression of AD. This review, based on literature from PubMed, SciELO, MDPI, and ScienceDirect, evaluates the role of bioactive compounds and dietary

Antarctic krill is a rich source of bioactive peptides with potential immunomodulatory properties. In this study, in vitro and in vivo models were used to evaluate the immunoregulatory effects of Antarctic krill enzymatic hydrolysates. Among the hydrolysates produced using different enzymes, the neutral protease yielded the highest degree of hydrolysis and most effectively promoted the proliferation of RAW264.7 macrophages. The hydrolysate was further fractionated by ultrafiltration and Sephadex G-15 chromatography, resulting in the isolation of a highly active fraction, NAKP-A, which signific

This study aimed to investigate the hepatoprotective effects and underlying mechanisms of a peptide-plant extract combination against alcohol-induced liver injury in a zebrafish model. The results demonstrate that wheat peptides (WP), soft-shelled turtle peptides (STP), and Pueraria lobata root extract (PE) significantly attenuate hepatomegaly and lipid droplet accumulation, enhance the activities of acetaldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) and superoxide dismutase (SOD), and decrease the levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and malonaldehyde (MDA). The optimal formulation ratio of WP, STP, and

Enzymatic hydrolysis can release bioactive peptides from spirulina proteins, but the influence of protease type and molecular-weight fraction on antioxidant and cell viability endpoints remains incompletely defined. This study compared papain- and trypsin-derived fractions from a food-grade, C-phycocyanin-rich spirulina preparation. Hydrolysis was monitored by UV‒visible spectroscopy and quantified using the o-phthaldialdehyde degree-of-hydrolysis assay, after which six membrane-derived fractions (P1, P5, P10, T1, T5, and T10) were evaluated by ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and 2,2-

BACKGROUND: Iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) persists as a global public health burden, urging the development of high-efficacy iron supplements with improved bioavailability and stability. Egg yolk phosphopeptides (EYPPs) possess excellent metal-chelating potential due to their abundant functional groups, making them ideal carriers for iron fortification.
RESULTS: This study synthesized and characterized an egg yolk phosphopeptide-ferrous (EYPP-Fe) chelate, optimizing reaction conditions as follows: 7.5% peptide concentration, 3:1 peptide-to-iron salt mass ratio, 55 °C reaction temperature, pH 7

Food-derived peptide libraries generated by protein hydrolysis are heterogeneous, making screening costly and difficult to scale across assay endpoints. Existing computational approaches rely on sequence information and often fail to capture conformational determinants or maintain robust performance under limited and partially disjoint data settings. We present a structure-sequence synergistic learning framework for prioritizing functional peptide candidates from food protein hydrolysates. The framework combines a pre-trained protein language model for contextual sequence encoding with a geome

Medicinal plants have been used in traditional healthcare systems and drug discovery since ancient times, owing to their storage of natural products, including bioactive metabolites and peptides. Bioactive peptides (BPs) are reported to have diverse therapeutic potential and are used for the treatment/prevention of many lifelong diseases, including cardiovascular. In our previous work, we isolated and characterized a bioactive peptide, ASGLCPEEAVPRR (BP1), from Picrorhiza kurroa and hypothesized that BP1 possesses angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activity, which has a cardioprote

Enzymatic hydrolysis enhances the functionality of walnut protein; however, the presence of bitter peptides limits its application. This study compared the hydrolytic efficiency, peptide patterns and bitterness of eight food-grade proteases, and revealed the mechanism behind the bitter taste of walnuts. Neutral protease performed best (60% degree of hydrolysis, 58% yield), producing mainly <3 kDa peptides. Trypsin yielded the most <0.5 kDa fragments, while acidic protease/trypsin released the most free amino acids. Papain, bromelain, and pepsin showed low activity, producing >3 kDa products. E

Hyperuricemia (HUA), which results from an imbalance between uric acid production and excretion, is a major risk for gout and other metabolic disorders. Food-derived bioactive peptides have attracted increasing attention as dietary candidates for HUA management. However, the relative in vivo efficacy of protein hydrolysates and their derived xanthine oxidase inhibitory peptides remains unclear. In this study, sunflower capitulum protein hydrolysate (SCPH) and its derived peptide, Leu-Gly-Asp-Phe (LGDF) were systematically compared by combining in vitro assays, animal experiments, serum metabol
