Arabinoxylan-Based Bioplastic from Wheat Bran: A Promising Replacement for Synthetic Plastics.

The milling process of wheat annually generates over 150 million tons of wheat bran (WB), which has significant potential for bioplastic production. However, the production of bioplastics from these resources has never been explored until now. Wheat bran (WB) polymer was evaluated for its potential as an environmentally friendly biodegradable plastic, exhibiting a tensile strength of 2.3 MPa, elongation exceeding 100%, and resistance to diluted mineral acids, thereby highlighting its suitability for food packaging and related applications. The biodegradable plastic films were prepared through

Impacts of Nutrients on Alkene Biodegradation Rates and Microbial Community Composition in Enriched Consortia from Natural Inocula.

There is a growing need for biological and chemical methods for upcycling plastic waste streams. Pyrolysis processes can accelerate plastic depolymerization by breaking polyethylene into smaller alkene components which may be more biodegradable than the initial polymer. While the biodegradation of alkanes has been extensively studied, the role microorganisms play in alkene breakdown is not well understood. Alkene biodegradation holds the potential to contribute to the coupling of chemical and biological processing of polyethylene plastics. In addition, nutrient levels are known to impact rates

Functional characterization of biodegradable films obtained from whole Paecilomyces variotii biomass.

The indiscriminate use of petroleum-based polymers and plastics for single-use food packaging has led to serious environmental problems due the non-biodegradable characteristics. Thus, much attention has been focused on the research of new biobased and biodegradable materials. Yeast and fungal biomass are low-cost and abundant sources of biopolymers with highly promising properties for the development of biodegradable materials. This study aimed to select a preparation method to develop new biodegradable films using the whole biomass of Paecilomyces variotii subjected to successive physical tr

Nephrotoxicity induced by PLA NPs and CuSO4: Crosstalk between Cu metabolism and ferroptosis via ATP7B autophagy.

Polylactic acid (PLA) plastics exhibit greater environmental degradability than petroleum-based plastics, potentially exacerbating nanoplastic (NPs) formation that enters the food chain. PLA NPs can accumulate in kidneys and transport heavy metals like copper (Cu) due to their high surface area and charge properties. Ferroptosis, an iron-dependent cell death pathway, is implicated in renal diseases. While Cu homeostasis disruption may interact with ferroptosis. This study explored PLA NPs and Cu-induced kidney injury, examining Cu-ferroptosis crosstalk and autophagy's regulatory role. Our find

Underestimated microplastics in sea turtles: Implications of a 200 μm detection limit for ingestion monitoring.

Marine litter, particularly plastic pollution, poses a significant threat to marine ecosystems. Sea turtles are especially vulnerable to plastic ingestion due to their feeding behaviour and migratory patterns, making them valuable bioindicators of marine plastic pollution. This study aimed to introduce a methodological improvement by reducing the minimum particle size analysed from 1 to 0.20 mm, and to quantify and characterize plastics found in the digestive tracts of sea turtles. We report a high incidence of plastic ingestion in nearly every turtle examined (n = 39; frequency of occurrence

Biotoxicity of silver nanoparticles complicated by the co-existence of micro-/nano-plastics.

Silver nanoparticles (AgNP) and polystyrene (PS) plastics have been broadly utilized in various field, e.g., food storage, packaging materials, and medical therapies. However, investigation on the potential biotoxicity induced by the co-exposure to AgNP and PS plastics remains understudied. Thus, we performed this study to examine the toxicological profile of the co-exposure to AgNP and PS in mice. Biochemical and microbial characterizations were performed in mice receiving 90-day oral gavage feeding to examine the hepatotoxicity, neurotoxicity, inflammatory responses, gut microbial alteration

Sustainable bioplastics manufacturing from renewable sources.

Fossil-based material manufacturing has long been linked to the acceleration of climate change through carbon dioxide emissions. In addition to their negative impact on the environment, the depletion of nonrenewable fossil fuels has led to a global demand for sustainable and environmentally friendly alternatives. This has sparked a surge of academic interest in the past few decades on the manufacture of bio-based materials as substitutes for fossil-based materials. As sustainability becomes a global imperative, bioplastics are rapidly emerging as a viable alternative to conventional petroleum-

Engineering Kluyveromyces marxianus for 3-hydroxypropionic acid production at elevated temperature from Jerusalem artichoke tubers and crude glycerol.

This study engineered the thermotolerant yeast Kluyveromyces marxianus to produce 3-hydroxypropionic acid (3-HP), a key precursor for biodegradable plastics, via the malonyl-CoA pathway using non-food feedstocks. The 3-HP titer was further increased through deleting Adh2A and Ach1, which prevents the synthesis of byproducts ethanol and acetic acid. Using Jerusalem artichoke tuber powder, engineered strain produced 27.32 and 32.31 g/L of 3-HP at 37 °C and 42 °C through fed-batch fermentation. Metabolic reconstruction replaced the native FADH2-dependent glycerol pathway (GUT1/GUT2) with an NADH-

PHA Production from Cheese Whey and "Scotta": Comparison between a Consortium and a Pure Culture of Leuconostoc mesenteroides.

It is urgent to expand the market of biodegradable alternatives to oil-derived plastics owing to (i) increasingly limited oil availability/accessibility, and (ii) the dramatic impact of traditional plastics on aquatic life, the food chain, all Earth ecosystems, and ultimately, human health. Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are promising biodegradable polymers that can be obtained through microbial fermentation of agro-industrial byproducts, e.g., milk and cheese whey. Here, the PHA-accumulating efficiency of a mixed microbial culture (MMC, derived from activated sludges) grown on dairy byproducts

High-throughput experimentation for discovery of biodegradable polyesters.

The consistent rise of plastic pollution has stimulated interest in the development of biodegradable plastics. However, the study of polymer biodegradation has historically been limited to a small number of polymers due to costly and slow standard methods for measuring degradation, slowing new material innovation. High-throughput polymer synthesis and a high-throughput polymer biodegradation method are developed and applied to generate a biodegradation dataset for 642 chemically distinct polyesters and polycarbonates. The biodegradation assay was based on the clear-zone technique, using automa

A review on the application of starch in biodegradable mulch films.

Traditional plastic mulch films have caused serious environmental problems. The continuous accumulation of non-degradable plastic residues such as polyethylene has led to soil pollution in agriculture and has become one of the major sources of the global plastic pollution crisis. With the enhancement of environmental awareness and policy support, more and more countries and regions have begun to pay attention to the research and application of biodegradable materials. This is to achieve sustainable agricultural development. Among them, starch-based biodegradable films have received extensive a

Degradation of starch-based bioplastic bags in the pelagic and benthic zones of the Gulf of Oman.

The Gulf of Oman is becoming increasingly polluted with plastics, hence bioplastics have been considered 'a substitute', although their biodegradability in marine environments has not been well investigated. Most research has been performed on cellulose-based bioplastics, whereas starch-based bioplastics have proven to be a suitable, but less researched, alternative. This study is the first of its kind designed to investigate the degradability of two different types of starch-based bioplastic bags, available in the market and labeled as "biodegradable", in the pelagic and benthic zones of one

Superior sequence-controlled poly(L-lactide)-based bioplastic with tunable seawater biodegradation.

Developing superior-performance marine-biodegradable plastics remains a critical challenge in mitigating marine plastic pollution. Commercially available biodegradable polymers, such as poly(L-lactide) (PLA), undergo slow degradation in complex marine environments. This study introduces an innovative bioplastic design that employs a facile ring-opening and coupling reaction to incorporate hydrophilic polyethylene glycol (PEG) into PLA, yielding PEG-PLA copolymers with either sequence-controlled alternating or random structures. These materials exhibit exceptional toughness in both wet and dry

Revolution or trap? Long-term diffusion of bioplastics in China: Economic losses, health benefits, and policy pathways based on a multi-module CGE-LCA model.

Bioplastics, which are made from crops and are biodegradable, are considered a sustainable alternative to petroleum-based plastics for reducing emissions and pollution. However, there is currently insufficient systematic assessment of the long-term economic, health, and environmental impacts, as well as the long-term policy effects and consumer diffusion patterns, of large-scale promotion of bioplastics in different regions of China. To address this gap, this study developed a multi-regional dynamic simulation framework integrating a recursive dynamic computable general equilibrium model (CGE)

Exploiting Polyhydroxyalkanoates for Biomedical Applications.

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) are biodegradable plastic. Numerous bacteria produce PHAs under environmental stress conditions, such as excess carbon-rich organic matter and limitations of other nutritional elements such as potassium, magnesium, oxygen, phosphorus, and nitrogen. In addition to having physicochemical properties similar to fossil-fuel-based plastics, PHAs have unique features that make them ideal for medical devices, such as easy sterilization without damaging the material itself and easy dissolution following use. PHAs can replace traditional plastic materials used in the biomedic

How harmless are alternative bioplastics? A review of their toxicological outcomes in aquatic organisms.

Plastic pollution is one of the major global concerns. The replacement of traditional synthetic polymers by "greener" alternatives (i.e., biodegradable and/or bio-based plastics) with lower toxicity and environmental impact has been identified as a key strategy to reduce the environmental hazards posed by plastics. Despite the improvements brought by bioplastics from the environmental degradability and overall life-cycle standpoint, a few recent studies have reported that these new polymers have similar (or, even, higher) toxicity to conventional plastics (such as PET), primarily due to their

Oligomeric lactic acid nanoplastics induce intrauterine growth restriction in mice by disrupting GATA2-mediated placental vascular development.

Humans are increasingly exposed to "eco-friendly" biodegradable microplastic pollution, whose usage in packaging and medical applications is growing exponentially. The bioplastic polylactic acid (PLA) has recently been demonstrated to release large quantities of oligomeric lactic acid (OLA) nanoplastics causing adverse health effects. No research has reported on intrauterine biodistribution of OLA, and how gestational exposure may impact on early development of the fetus. Here, we reveal that OLA plastics can readily breach the placental barrier and accumulate in various fetal organs in a mous

Strong STMP-crosslinked lignin/chitosan hydrogel films with enhanced aqueous stability and bioactivity for active food packaging.

Plastic pollution has intensified globally due to the widespread use of non-biodegradable packaging materials. Conventional passive plastics lack adaptive functionality, limiting their preservation efficiency. Although biopolymer-based hydrogels offer biodegradability, film-forming ability, and intrinsic bioactivity, their instability in aqueous environments restricts application in high-moisture foods such as meat. In this study, lignin extracted from sugarcane tops via acid-alkali treatment was incorporated with chitosan films to enhance antioxidant, antimicrobial, UV-blocking, and mechanica

Biodegradability-driven nanoplastic modulation of copper fate and toxicity in wetland plants.

Nanoplastics (NPs) are increasingly detected in wetlands and may interact with co-occurring metals, yet the influence of NP biodegradability on metal fate and phytotoxicity remains poorly understood. This study investigated how NP biodegradability modulated copper (Cu) uptake and toxicity in wetland plants, using the mangrove Avicennia marina as a model. Seedlings were exposed to Cu alone and in combination with three types of NPs: non-biodegradable polystyrene (PS), biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA), and polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT) in 30-day sediment microcosms. Feeding preference of insect larvae to waste electrical and electronic equipment plastics.

Waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) plastics not only pollute the environment, but are challenging to treat in an environmentally friendly manner. Biodegradation by insect larvae is potentially an eco-friendly method to treat WEEE plastics, but information about the feeding preference of insect larvae to WEEE plastics is lacking. In this study, a total of nine WEEE and pristine plastics were chosen to feed larvae of the following two insect species, i.e. Galleria mellonella and Tenebrio molitor. G. mellonella larvae significantly favor corresponding pristine plastics compared to t
