Intermittent Oxygen Supply Facilitates Codegradation of Trichloroethene and Toluene by Anaerobic Consortia.

Biodegradation is commonly employed for remediating trichloroethene- or toluene-contaminated sites. However, remediation methods using either anaerobic or aerobic degradation are inefficient for dual pollutants. We developed an anaerobic sequencing batch reactor system with intermittent oxygen supply for the codegradation of trichloroethylene and toluene. Our results showed that oxygen inhibited anaerobic dechlorination of trichloroethene, but dechlorination rates remained comparable to that at dissolved oxygen levels of 0.2 mg/L. Intermittent oxygenation engendered reactor redox fluctuations

A comprehensive assessment of Yarrowia lipolytica and its interactions with metals: Current updates and future prospective.

The non-conventional yeast Yarrowia lipolytica has been popular as a model system for understanding biological processes such as dimorphism and lipid accumulation. The organism can efficiently utilize hydrophobic substrates (hydrocarbons and triglycerides) thereby rendering it relevant in bioremediation of oil polluted environments. The current review focuses on the interactions of this fungus with metal pollutants and its potential application in bioremediation of metal contaminated locales. This fungus is intrinsically equipped with a variety of physiological and biochemical features that en

Biological approaches practised using genetically engineered microbes for a sustainable environment: A review.

Conventional methods used to remediate toxic substances from the environment have failed drastically, and thereby, advancement in newer remediation techniques can be one of the ways to improve the quality of bioremediation. The increased environmental pollution led to the exploration of microorganisms and construction of genetically engineered microbes (GEMs) for pollution abatement through bioremediation. The present review deals with the successful bioremediation techniques and approaches practised using genetically modified or engineered microbes. In the present scenario, physical and chemi

Opinion: Taking phytoremediation from proven technology to accepted practice.

Phytoremediation is the use of plants to extract, immobilize, contain and/or degrade contaminants from soil, water or air. It can be an effective strategy for on site and/or in situ removal of various contaminants from soils, including petroleum hydrocarbons (PHC), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), solvents (e.g., trichloroethylene [TCE]), munitions waste (e.g., 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene [TNT]), metal(loid)s, salt (NaCl) and radioisotopes. Commercial phytoremediation technologies appear to be underutilized globally. The primary objective of this opinion pie

Microbial degradation of chloroform.

Chloroform (CF) is largely produced by both anthropogenic and natural sources. It is detected in ground and surface water sources and it represents the most abundant halocarbon in the atmosphere. Microbial CF degradation occurs under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Apart from a few reports describing the utilization of CF as a terminal electron acceptor during growth, CF degradation was mainly reported as a cometabolic process. CF aerobic cometabolism is supported by growth on short-chain alkanes (i.e., methane, propane, butane, and hexane), aromatic hydrocarbons (i.e., toluene and phen

Organophosphorus-degrading bacteria: ecology and industrial applications.

The first organophosphorus (OP) compound-degrading bacterial strain was isolated from a paddy field in the Philippines in 1973. Since then, several phylogenetically distinct bacteria that can degrade OP by co-metabolism, or use OPs as a source of carbon, phosphorus or nitrogen, have been isolated from different parts of the world. There is huge potential for industrial applications of OP-degrading bacteria. Important advances in our understanding of the microbiology, genomics and evolution of OP-degrading bacteria have been made over the past four decades, and are discussed in this review.

Review of concentrations and chemistry of trichloroacetate in the environment.

This paper reviews the concentrations of trichloroacetate (TCA) in the atmosphere-plant-soil system. Data originate mainly from Europe. The median TCA concentration in rainwater and canopy drip decreased until 1995. From then the median TCA concentration in rainwater remains rather constant while for canopy drip later data are not available. The same seems to hold for concentrations in air although a very limited data set is available. The median concentrations in coniferous needles and groundwater are constant for the period observed. The median TCA concentrations in soil decreased until 1992

Biodegradation of PHBV-based biocomposites in two different marine environments of the Mediterranean Sea.

Plastic pollution has become one of the most pressing environmental issues worldwide, with large amounts of conventional plastics accumulating in terrestrial and marine ecosystems due to their persistence and ineffective waste management. Developing and understanding the biodegradation behavior of environmentally friendly alternatives, such as bioplastics, is therefore crucial to mitigate this problem. In this context, the degradation of PHBV-based biocomposites containing purified cellulose (TC), wood flour (WF), and almond shell (AS) fibers have been investigated and compared with neat PHBV

Statistical optimization of crude oil bioremediation using Streptomyces aurantiogriseus isolated from Egypt's Western Desert.

One of the most common soil pollutants on a global scale is fuel, which is fundamental for daily activities. Biodegradation has been regarded as an ideal remediation technique for hydrocarbon pollution. We investigated the potential of 28 Streptomyces species inhabiting different hydrocarbon-polluted soils for the biodegradation of petroleum. The tested isolates were cultured on mineral salts broth containing 2% crude oil as the sole carbon source. Gravimetric analysis of residual crude oil was performed, and the samples that showed the highest percentage of biodegradation were also analyzed v

Soil Type Governs the Degradation Dynamics and Microbial Assimilation of Biodegradable Plastic Polybutylene Adipate Terephthalate.

Biodegradable plastics like polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT) are increasingly marketed as alternatives to conventional plastics, yet how soil properties regulate degradation kinetics, how intact films and microplastic fragments differentially affect microbial communities, and which metabolic pathways and functional genes govern mineralization remain unclear. The present study investigated PBAT degradation mechanisms in 10 distinct agricultural soils by integrating metagenomics, microbial community analysis, and strain isolation. The results revealed that the environmental fate of PBAT

Treatment of biowaste commingled with biodegradable bioplastic films using Black Soldier Fly larvae: Generation and fate of micro-plastics.

The use of Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae is emerging as a promising alternative for biowaste (i.e. food waste) treatment, generating larval biomass and process residues, suitable for use as animal feed and fertilizer, respectively. In line with an increasing use of starch-based bioplastics in food packaging, the presence of these biopolymers and associated biodegradable microplastics (BMPs) in food waste is expected to rise. Knowledge of the generation of BMPs and their fate in the BSF treatment process is scarce, or indeed, completely lacking in the case of small-sized BMPs (<50 μm). The pre

Multi-Dimensional Elimination of β-Lactams in the Rural Wetland: Molecule Design and Screening for More Antibacterial and Degradable Substitutes.

Restricted economic conditions and limited sewage treatment facilities in rural areas lead to the discharge of small-scale breeding wastewater containing higher values of residual beta-lactam antibiotics (β-lactams), which seriously threatens the aquatic environment. In this paper, molecular docking and a comprehensive method were performed to quantify and fit the source modification for the combined biodegradation of β-lactams. Using penicillin (PNC) as the target molecule, combined with contour maps for substitute modification, a three-dimensional quantitative structure-activity relationship

How data on transformation products can support the redesign of sulfonamides towards better biodegradability in the environment.

Sulfonamide antibiotics (SUAs) released into the environment can affect environmental und human health, e.g., by accelerating the development and selection of antimicrobial resistant bacteria. Benign by Design (BbD) of SUAs is an effective risk prevention approach. BbD principles aim for fast and complete mineralization or at least deactivation of the SUA after release into the aquatic environment. Main objective was to test if mixtures of transformation products (TPs) generated via photolysis of SUAs can be used as an efficient way to screen for similarly effective but better biodegradable SU

[Characteristics and influencing factors of trichloroethylene adsorption in different soil types].

Adsorption plays an important role in the transport and the fate of trichloroethylene (TCE) in soil. Six types of soil, including two types of natural soil with different organic carbon content and four types of soil with the low aggregation of "soft carbon" pre-treated by hydrogen peroxide or with all organic carbon removed by high temperature ignition from the original soil, were adopted as adsorbents. The effects of parameters (organic carbon content and composition, minerals, the initial TCE concentration, solution pH, moisture content and ionic strength) on TCE adsorption capacity were ex

Biodegradation of a phthalate plasticizer, di-isononyl phthalate (DINP), by Sphingobium chungbukense.

In this study, di-isononyl phthalate (DINP) was efficiently degraded by Sphingobium chungbukense KCTC 2955. The optimal conditions for DINP (100 mg L(-1)) degradation by S. chungbukense in a mineral salts medium were found to be pH 7.0, 30 degrees C, and stirring at 200 rpm. The maximum specific rate of DINP degradation was found to be concentration dependent, with a maximum of 4.12 mg DINP L(-1) h(-1). DINP was transformed rapidly by S. chungbukense, with the formation of monoisononyl phthalate (MIP) and phthalic acid, which subsequently degraded further. These results highlight the potential

An improved method of hydrogen production as electron donor for anaerobic bioremediation.

This paper investigated an improved electrochemical approach that is able to provide hydrogen for anaerobic bioremediation of chloroethenes in subsurface. Hydrogen is the ultimate electron donor of biodechlorination processes. In experiments, iron wire was used as electrodes, an anaerobic bacteria enrichment collected from a site contaminated with chloroethenes as test microbes, perchloroethylene (PCE) as model chloroethene. Experiments were conducted by switching the polarities of electrodes periodically and supplying electrical power in an intermittent way. The results showed that an electro

Phytoremediation of trichloroethylene with hybrid poplars.

Axenic tumor cultures of poplar cells, clone H11-11, were grown in the presence of [14C]-trichloroethylene (TCE) (uniformly labeled). The cells were capable of metabolizing TCE to produce trichloroethanol, di- and trichloroacetic acid. Some of the carbon from TCE was found in insoluble, nonextractable cell residue, and small amounts were mineralized to [14C]CO2. Poplar cuttings grown in soil and exposed to TCE produced the same metabolites. In field trials, trees were planted in soil in test cells and exposed to TCE via underground water injection during the growing season. During the growing
