Amphibian fungal panzootic causes catastrophic and ongoing loss of biodiversity.

Anthropogenic trade and development have broken down dispersal barriers, facilitating the spread of diseases that threaten Earth's biodiversity. We present a global, quantitative assessment of the amphibian chytridiomycosis panzootic, one of the most impactful examples of disease spread, and demonstrate its role in the decline of at least 501 amphibian species over the past half-century, including 90 presumed extinctions. The effects of chytridiomycosis have been greatest in large-bodied, range-restricted anurans in wet climates in the Americas and Australia. Declines peaked in the 1980s, and

Relationships between plastic litter and chemical pollutants on benthic biodiversity.

Five Descriptors (D) of Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD): marine litter (D10), non-indigenous species (D2) and organic and inorganic pollutants (D8), were estimated in a coastal area of GSA 16 (Augusta harbour, Central Mediterranean Sea) in order to study their effects on the biodiversity (D1) of the benthic community D6) and to improve data for the MSFD. Investigation of plastic debris had led to the identification of 38 fragments divided into four categories, among which microplastics resulted as the most abundant. Six non-indigenous species, belonging to Polychaeta (Kirkegaardia d

Extracting AI agent-accessible data from biodiversity literature with corpus.

Much of our shared knowledge about biodiversity, including data on species' traits, relationships, and occurrences, is stored in the published literature. This body of knowledge can span multiple centuries, languages, and publication formats, making it challenging to collect, compare, and synthesize data across entire clades. New artificial intelligence (AI) tools, including large language models (LLMs) in particular, are well suited to integrate and summarize large bodies of text and figures. However, the biodiversity literature is too large and multi-layered to be reliably interrogated by si

Biodiversity of Eucalyptus endophytic fungi across different climates in Iran.

Endophytic fungi are crucial for plant health, but the relative importance of climate versus host factors in shaping their communities is not fully understood. This study investigates the hypothesis that macro-climate is one of the primary drivers of endophytic fungal diversity and composition in Eucalyptus camaldulensis across different regions in Iran. A total of 712 fungal isolates were isolated from leaves, branches, and fruits across five provinces (Alborz, Isfahan, Mazandaran, Qom, and Tehran) spanning arid to humid climates. Cultivation and morphological/molecular identification reveale

Current protected areas provide limited benefits for European river biodiversity.

Protected areas are a principal conservation tool for addressing biodiversity loss. Such protection is especially needed in freshwaters, given their greater biodiversity losses compared to terrestrial and marine ecosystems. However, broad-scale evaluations of protected area effectiveness for freshwater biodiversity are lacking. Here, we provide a continental-scale analysis of the relationship between protected areas and freshwater biodiversity using 1,754 river invertebrate community time series sampled between 1986 and 2022 across ten European countries. Protected areas primarily benefited po

Does high biodiversity reduce the risk of Lyme disease invasion?

BACKGROUND: It has been suggested that increasing biodiversity, specifically host diversity, reduces pathogen and parasite transmission amongst wildlife (causing a "dilution effect"), whereby transmission amongst efficient reservoir hosts, (e.g. Peromyscus spp. mice for the agent of Lyme disease Borrelia burgdorferi) is reduced by the presence of other less efficient host species. If so, then increasing biodiversity should inhibit pathogen and parasite invasion. METHODS: We investigated this hypothesis by studying invasion of B. burgdorferi and its tick vector Ixodes scapularis in 71 field si

Biodiversity of organotin resistant Pseudomonas from west coast of India.

Five bacterial isolates were screened for resistance to organotin compound, i.e. tributyltin chloride (TBTC) up to 2 mM. The optimum pH, temperature and salinity for the growth of the isolates were found to be 7, 28 degrees C and 2.5%, respectively. The isolates were tested for survival tolerance to heavy metals (mercury, cadmium and zinc) and co-resistance to antibiotics viz. ampicillin, kanamycin, rifampicin, streptomycin, penicillin, chloramphenicol, tetracycline, nalidixic acid and neomycin. Although our earlier study reported that these five bacterial strains are of different species of P

Biodiversity of Pneumocystis carinii hominis: typing with different DNA regions.

The purpose of this study was to identify the most useful gene for the detection of biodiversity of Pneumocystis carinii hominis isolates and to compare samples from French and Italian subjects. We studied 20 bronchoalveolar lavage fluid specimens from 20 human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients (10 French and 10 Italian patients) with Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia by DNA sequencing of the thymidylate synthase (TS), 5S rRNA, large-subunit mitochondrial rRNA (mt LSU rRNA), and internal transcribed spacer (ITS1 and ITS2) genes. Thirteen of the 20 sequenced samples had the prototype TS gen

Managing bees in a pathogenic world: research priorities to protect biodiversity.

Pathogens associated with managed bees are frequently detected in wild arthropods, raising concerns about potential negative impacts on biodiversity and fueling scientific, societal, and political debate. However, major gaps remain in our understanding of the mechanisms driving pathogen spillovers, their impacts on recipient hosts, and mitigation strategies. We propose an integrative, holistic research framework beyond the current focus on pathogen detection that centers on the impacts of shared pathogens and on management strategies to mitigate risks. This reframing will help guide future res

Comprehensive and representative conservation planning for biodiversity of ice-free Antarctica.

Antarctica is designated as a natural reserve devoted to peace and science, with Antarctic Specially Protected Areas (ASPAs) serving as the primary instrument for area-based biodiversity protection. However, the existing ASPA network lacks the comprehensiveness and representativeness required under Annex V, Article 3(2), of the Madrid Protocol. We demonstrated the application of systematic conservation planning to explore the trade-offs underlying protection at a continent-wide scale, focusing on the principles of comprehensiveness and representativeness. These principles are the foundations o

Environmental and Evolutionary Correlates of Extinction Risk in a Global Biodiversity Hotspot.

Macro-evolutionary and ecological drivers of extinction risk in different organismal groups are not well understood. Some studies have indicated that certain clades may be predisposed to extinction. Through a comparative phylogenetic framework, we assessed whether there are significant evolutionary and environmental correlates of extinction risk for a species rich plant group (Pomaderreae tribe; Rhamnaceae). We focused on the southwest Australian global biodiversity hotspot, where most species of Pomaderreae occur. We also applied 10 different machine learning models to predict and impute data

Synergies and trade-offs for reaching global biodiversity and climate commitments.

The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework strives to expand high-quality protected areas globally, yet faces economic constraints, climate change and human pressures. This requires integrating biological and socio-economic complexity while ensuring equity. We explore multi-target '30 by 30' and '50 by 50' (the 'Half Earth') protected area expansion strategies that combine species diversity with carbon storage, quantifying their effectiveness (the represented proportion of global species richness and carbon stocks), connectivity and cost-efficiency. Centering Biodiversity: Integrating the Complexity of Sex Into a Developmental Biology Course.

In biology, variation is the norm, not the exception. This particularly holds true for the concepts of sex and sex determination, which we refer to here as biology of sex. Unfortunately, biology of sex topics are often taught using oversimplified content, situating sex as a simple, genetically determined binary, and that mammals are the predominant model for biology of sex across organisms. Teaching using these oversimplifications leads students to develop a limited understanding of biology of sex topics, which limits their capacity as future researchers and also harmfully and erroneously supp

The biodiversity we ignore: A global meta-analysis on taxonomic bias.

As biodiversity decline continues, there is a critical need to document, monitor, and protect species equitably across the tree of life. However, both scientific research and societal perceptions of biodiversity are often biased toward large, colorful, charismatic, familiar, or otherwise "useful" species. We conducted a global meta-analysis encompassing 905 effect sizes from 78 studies across three decades of research assessing drivers of taxonomic bias. Positive biases were widespread across study designs, regions, and taxonomic scopes, with plants and invertebrates typically receiving dispro

Monitoring insect numbers and biodiversity with a vertical-beam entomological radar.

Concerns about perceived widespread declines in insect numbers have led to recognition of a requirement for long-term monitoring of insect biodiversity. Here we examine whether an existing, radar-based, insect monitoring system developed for research on insect migration could be adapted to this role. The radar detects individual larger (greater than 10 mg) insects flying at heights of 150-2550 m and estimates their size and mass. It operates automatically and almost continuously through both day and night. Accumulation of data over a 'half-month' (approx. 15 days) averages out weather effects

Sarcoptic mange is an emerging threat to biodiversity in the Qinling Mountains in China.

Sarcoptic mange, a disease caused by the burrowing mite Sarcoptes scabiei, is globally endemic and an emerging threat to wildlife. Although many studies have shown that wildlife diseases play key roles in biodiversity conservation, knowledge about sarcoptic mange is still insufficient. In this study, we aim to improve the understanding of the impacts of sarcoptic mange on wildlife populations, the mechanisms involved in its eco-epidemiology and the associated risks to public and ecosystem health by investigating mass death events in gorals and serows in the Qinling Mountains. We conducted inte
