Conductive ternary MXene-noble metal nanocluster-protein composite hydrogel-based robust, anti-biofouling and ultrasensitive electrochemiluminescence platform for biothiol sensing.

The three-dimensional (3D) hydrophilic network of hydrogels can both load signalling substances and allow the penetration of ions and small molecular targets, while preventing biomacromolecules from contaminating electrode surfaces, making them promising for anti-biofouling electrochemical sensing of complex biological samples. However, the fragile mechanical structure and poor electronic conductivity of hydrogels usually result in low sensitivity of the hydrogel-based biosensing systems, severely limiting their widespread application. Herein, a mechanically robust and conductive ternary MXene

Surface engineering of biomedical catheters using N-acetyl cysteine functionalized carboxymethyl chitosan nanosystems to combat biofouling and device-associated infections.

Functionalized anti-biofouling nanosystems were developed to engineer the surface of silicone catheters for mitigating the incidence of device-associated infections (DAIs). These infections are typically a consequence of microbial biofilms and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) which lead to increased hospitalization costs and mortality rates. Covalent coupling of N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) with O-carboxymethyl chitosan (O-CMC) was optimized to develop NAC-functionalized CMC nanosystems (NAC-CMC-NS). The coupling was confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrar

Surface charges and shell crosslinks each play significant roles in mediating degradation, biofouling, cytotoxicity and immunotoxicity for polyphosphoester-based nanoparticles.

The construction of nanostructures from biodegradable precursors and shell/core crosslinking have been pursued as strategies to solve the problems of toxicity and limited stability, respectively. Polyphosphoester (PPE)-based micelles and crosslinked nanoparticles with non-ionic, anionic, cationic, and zwitterionic surface characteristics for potential packaging and delivery of therapeutic and diagnostic agents, were constructed using a quick and efficient synthetic strategy, and importantly, demonstrated remarkable differences in terms of cytotoxicity, immunotoxicity, and biofouling properties

Mitigation of membrane biofouling by a novel Pseudomonas knackmussii HITSZ-Q1 immobilized in biochar-reinforced beads: Quenching mechanism and MBR performance.

The application of quorum quenching (QQ) bacteria for fouling control in membrane bioreactors (MBRs) is often hampered by the gradual loss of biological activity during operation. Here, this limitation is overcome by combining a newly isolated QQ bacterium (Pseudomonas knackmussii HITSZ-Q1) with a low-cost biochar-reinforced polyvinyl alcohol/sodium alginate (PVA/SA/BC) immobilization matrix. The strain completely degraded N-octanoyl-l-homoserine lactone (C8-HSL) and N-(3-oxododecanoyl)-l-homoserine lactone (3-oxo-C12-HSL) within 2 h via intracellular acylase, maintained stable QQ activity at

In Situ Aqueous Spice Extract-Based Antifungal Lock Strategy for Salvage of Foley's Catheter Biofouled with Candida albicans Biofilm Gel.

Candida forms a gel-like biofilm in the Foley's catheter (FC) causing tenacious biofouling and severe urinary tract infections (UTIs). For the first time, a spice extract-based antifungal lock therapy (ALT) has been developed to inhibit the Candida albicans gel matrix in FC. Aqueous extracts of garlic, clove, and Indian gooseberry were used as ALT lock solutions and tested against biofilm-forming multidrug-resistant clinical isolates of C. albicans. Reduction in the gel matrices formation in the catheter was confirmed by Point inoculation, MTT assay, CFU, and SEM analysis at 12 and 24 h of inc

"Push-kill-repel" synergistic antifouling: Coral-inspired polypyrrole/quaternary ammonium molecular brushes via electrochemical layer-by-layer assembly for dynamic biofouling control.

Marine biofouling has long posed a major challenge for marine applications. In this work, inspired by the tentacle-like structures of corals and their remarkable dynamic antifouling capability, a novel "push-kill-repel" polypyrrole/quaternary ammonium molecular brush (PPy/QAS) antifouling system was constructed by electrochemical layer-by-layer assembly. PPy-DBSA was first prepared, followed by voltage-driven grafting of CTAB onto PPy-DBSA, yielding a PPy/CTAB-E system with dynamic coral-like tentacles under cathodic polarization, actively pushing away fouling organisms. Moreover, the inherent

Robust and ultra-stable nanohesive-based solid-like slippery coating under dynamic blood flow environment for durable prevention of thrombosis and biofouling.

Biomedical devices face thrombosis and infection risks due to nonspecific bioadhesion. Although liquid-infused surfaces (LIS) exhibit anti-biofouling potential, lubricant loss under blood flow limits their utility. An innovative "solid-like" slippery coating (SSC) addresses this via amino-functionalized SiO2 nanoparticles anchoring carboxy terminated silicone oil within an epoxy resin matrix. The collective effects of electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonds and van der Waals forces between nanoparticles and silicone oil, in combination with epoxy resin encapsulation and dense microstructure

Real-Time Probing of Biofouling Kinetics on Orthokeratology Lenses: QCM-D Quantification of Protein/Lipid Adsorption and Multipurpose Solution-Mediated Elution under Physiological Flow.

Orthokeratology (OK) lenses for myopia correction are susceptible to biofouling by tear-derived biomolecules, escalating the risks of ocular infection and inflammation. Prevailing studies that rely on end point protein quantification fail to capture the real-time kinetics of fouling formation. Here, we fabricated a UV pressure-assisted polymer-grafted quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D) sensor exhibiting exceptional stability, nanoscale smoothness (RMS roughness ≈2 nm), and interfacial peel resistance. This platform enables in situ tracking of adsorption/desorption

NH2-CuO-MCM-41 covalently cross-linked multipurpose membrane for applications in water treatment: Removal of hazardous pollutants from water, water desalination and anti-biofouling performance.

The current study was planned to fabricate a new set of membranes to target multiple application areas such as desalting, removal of micropollutants and antibiofouling performance. In-situ incorporated copper oxide to MCM-41 (CuO-MCM-41) was synthesized and amine (-NH2) functionalized by reacting with N1-(3-trimethoxy silylpropyl) diethylenetriamine (NTSDETA) yielding NH2-CuO-MCM-41. Different concentrations of NH2-CuO-MCM-41 were covalently cross-linked in polyamide active layer during interfacial polymerization (IP) between N, N'-bis(3-aminopropyl)ethylenediamine and terephthaloyl chloride (

Assessing the Settling Velocity of Biofilm-Encrusted Microplastics: Accounting for Biofilms as an Equivalent to Surface Roughness.

While it is well established that a biofilm contributes to the sinking of plastics, the underlying mechanisms of how it influences the vertical transport of plastics have not been well explained. In this context, our study dives into the intricate effects of biofouling on the settling velocity (Ws) of microplastics (MPs) within the fluid. We adopt the perspective that the biofilm is a form of surface roughness impacting the drag coefficient (Cd) and vertical settling of MPs. By advancing the biofouling process model, we simulate the temporal variations of density and biofilm thickness of biofo

A combination of membrane relaxation and shear stress significantly improve the flux of gravity-driven membrane system.

Gravity-driven membrane (GDM) filtration system is a promising process for decentralized drinking water treatment. During the operation, membrane relaxation and shear stress could be simply achieved by intermittent filtration and water disturbance (created by occasionally shaking membrane model or stirring water in membrane tank), respectively. To better understand the impact of membrane relaxation and shear stress on the biofouling layer and stable flux in GDM system, action of daily 60-min intermission, daily flushing (cross-flow velocity = 10 cm s-1, 1 min), and the combination of the two (

Research on the application of compound microorganism preparation in reusing urban reclaimed water in circulating cooling water system.

A biological method was developed for reusing urban reclaimed water in circulating cooling water systems (CCWS), in which the compound microorganism preparation (CMP) mainly included nitrobacteria, Bacillus subtilis, photosynthetic bacteria and Thiobacillus denitrificans, was used to control the scaling, corrosion and biofouling of CCWS. The abundant carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus in urban reclaimed water met the needs of microbial growth. Compared with chemical agents, CMP had the advantages of high efficiency, no additional chemicals and being more economical. The research results showed th

Induced aging, structural change, and adsorption behavior modifications of microplastics by microalgae.

The effects of microalgal biofouling on microplastic (MP) may differ from bacterial biofouling. In this study, the influence of microalgae on MP surface alteration, structural change, and adsorption of organic micropollutants was evaluated. Virgin polyethylene (PE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and polyamide (PA) were each immersed in algal photobioreactor and river freshwater for 30 days to simulate algal and river microbe biofouling respectively. Consequently, their physicochemical changes and adsorption potential of a mixture of six bisphenol analogues (BPA, BPS, BPE, BPB, BPF, BPAF) and two p

Field Experiments, Behavioral Analyses, and Digestive Physiology Reveal the Selective Oyster-Feeding Strategy of Thais luteostoma.

Pearl oyster aquaculture is severely constrained by biofouling organisms, particularly fouling oysters, which substantially impair pearl oyster growth and farming efficiency. This study investigated the selective oyster-feeding behavior of the predatory gastropod Thais luteostoma and evaluated its potential as an ecological biofouling control agent in pearl oyster culture. Field co-culture experiments showed that T. luteostoma did not adversely affect the survival of Pinctada fucata martensii, while effectively reducing biofouling loads and significantly improving pearl oyster growth performan

Adhesion of Microdroplets on Water-Repellent Surfaces toward the Prevention of Surface Fouling and Pathogen Spreading by Respiratory Droplets.

Biofouling caused by the adhesion of respiratory microdroplets generated in sneezing and coughing plays an important role in the spread of many infectious diseases. Although water-repellent surfaces are widely used for the long-term repellency of aqueous solutions, their repellency to pathogen-containing microdroplets is elusive. In this work, microdroplets from picoliter to nanoliter were successfully generated in a controlled manner to mimic the exhaled microdroplets in sneezing and coughing, which allowed us to evaluate the adhesion of microdroplets on both superhydrophobic and lubricant-in

Lubricant skin on diverse biomaterials with complex shapes via polydopamine-mediated surface functionalization for biomedical applications.

Implantable biomedical devices require an anti-biofouling, mechanically robust, low friction surface for a prolonged lifespan and improved performance. However, there exist no methods that could provide uniform and effective coatings for medical devices with complex shapes and materials to prevent immune-related side effects and thrombosis when they encounter biological tissues. Here, we report a lubricant skin (L-skin), a coating method based on the application of thin layers of bio-adhesive and lubricant-swellable perfluoropolymer that impart anti-biofouling, frictionless, robust, and heat-m

Transparent, Antibiofouling Window Obtained with Surface Nanostructuring.

Biofouling is one of the key factors which limits the long-term performance of seawater sensors. Common measures to hinder biofouling include toxic paints, mechanical cleaning and UV radiation. All of these measures have various limitations. A very attractive solution would be to prevent biofilm formation by changing the surface structure of the sensor. This idea has been implemented successfully in various settings, but little work has been done on structuring optically transparent materials, which are often needed in sensor applications. In order to achieve good antibiofouling properties and

Comparing the antifouling efficacy of UVC used in conjunction with marine coatings for two static immersion test sites on the east coast of Florida.

Biofouling is a major issue in the marine and shipping industry. Marine coatings have been predominantly used in its management. Ultraviolet-C (UVC) treatment has been gaining interest as an antifouling method and recently has been under consideration for use in conjunction with coatings. A two-part study was conducted to investigate the efficacy of using UVC in preventing biofouling on ship hull coatings. The first part performed a test site comparison of UVC's efficacy in synergy with marine coatings for three months between an estuarine and an oceanic environment. The turbid, estuarine envi

Contact angle anomalies indicate that surface-active eluates from silicone coatings inhibit the adhesive mechanisms of fouling organisms.

Silicone coatings with critical surface tensions (CST) between 20 and 30 mN m-1 more easily release diverse types of biofouling than do materials of higher and lower CST. Oils added to these coatings selectively further diminish the attachment strengths of different marine fouling organisms, without significantly modifying the initial CST. In a search for the mechanisms of this improved biofouling resistance, the interfacial instabilities of four silicone coatings were characterised by comprehensive contact angle analyses, using up to 12 different diagnostic fluids selected to mimic the side c
