Patterns of biologic and psychologic risk factors in duodenal ulcer patients.

To clarify whether and how psychologic factors might contribute to peptic ulcer, in this study we addressed the relations between psychologic characteristics and known biologic risk factors among ulcer patients. In 75 patients with recent-onset, symptomatic duodenal ulcer, an index of three potential psychologic risk factors (stressful life events, abnormal Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, mood disturbance) was examined in relation to historical risk factors (sex, age, seasonality, family history, smoking, alcohol use, coffee consumption, nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug use), an

Immunogenicity of biologics delivered in the subcutaneous space: Delineating the contributing factors.

The subcutaneous (SC) route of administration for therapeutic proteins (TPs) offers advantages such as patient convenience, reduced delivery complexity, and self-administration leading to enhanced adherence. Although SC delivery may be perceived to have higher immunogenicity risk than intravenous (IV) administration due to longer antigen exposure and proximity to resident professional immune cells, recent data suggest that immunogenicity rates of TPs are comparable between SC and IV administration routes. Factors thought to contribute to immunogenicity risk encompass dosing regimen (route of a

The loneliness factor in eating disorders: Implications for psychopathology and biological signatures.

OBJECTIVES: Eating disorders (ED) are severe psychiatric conditions. While the biological consequences of EDs are well established, including an increase in inflammatory biomarkers, the influence of psychological factors, such as loneliness, has only recently gained attention in research. Loneliness has been associated with more severe psychopathology in ED patients, while its association with inflammatory biomarkers has only been explored in the general population. For these reasons, we aimed to investigate any possible associations between psychological features, trauma, and inflammatory bio

Genetic and biologic risk factors associated with hernia formation: A review.

BACKGROUND: This systematic review aims to identify genetic and biologic markers associated with abdominal hernia formation. METHODS: Following PRIMSA-guidelines, we searched PubMed, MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, and COCHRANE databases. RESULTS: Of 5946 studies, 65 were selected, excluding parastomal hernias due to insufficient data. For inguinal hernias, five studies unveiled 92 susceptible loci across 66 genes, predominantly linked to immune responses. Eleven studies observed elevated MMP-2 levels, with seven highlighting greater MMP-2 in direct compared to indirect inguinal hernias. One incisi

An updated overview of some factors that influence the biological effects of nanoparticles.

Nanoparticles (NPs) can be extremely effective in the early diagnosis and treatment of cancer due to their properties. The nanotechnology industry is developing rapidly. The number of multifunctional NPs has increased in the market and hundreds of NPs are in various stages of preclinical and clinical development. Thus, the mechanism underlying the effects of NPs on biological systems has received much attention. After NPs enter the body, they interact with plasma proteins, tumour cell receptors, and small biological molecules. This interaction is closely related to the size, shape, chemical co

Biological sex: an understudied factor driving disease susceptibility in pigs.

Biological sex is a major host factor influencing risk for infectious disease-associated mortality, and chronic inflammatory and metabolic diseases. Research in human and rodent models -has revealed sex differences that exist across organ systems during health and disease that may contribute to sex biases in disease risk. Despite the robust and growing literature on the role of sex as a risk factor in human disease, comparatively little attention has been focused on investigating the role of biological sex in disease susceptibility in agriculturally important animal populations such as the pig

von Willebrand factor sialylation-A critical regulator of biological function.

Essentials Von Willebrand Factor (VWF) is extensively glycosylated with serial studies demonstrating that these carbohydrate determinants play critical roles in regulating multiple aspects of VWF biology. Terminal sialic acid residues, expressed on both the N- and O-linked glycans of VWF, regulate VWF functional activity, susceptibility to proteolysis and plasma clearance in vivo. Quantitative and qualitative variations in VWF sialylation have been reported in patients with von Willebrand Disease, as well as in a number of other physiological and pathological states. Further studies are warran

von Willebrand factor clearance - biological mechanisms and clinical significance.

The mechanisms involved in regulating von Willebrand factor (VWF) clearance remain poorly understood. However recent studies have shown that macrophages play a critical role in regulating the half-life of VWF, and have identified specific lectin (including asialoglycoprotein, macrophage galactose-type lectin, Sigec-5 and C-type lectin domain family 4 member M) and scavenger receptors (including low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein-1, scavenger receptor A1 and stabilin-2) that are involved in VWF clearance. Further studies will be required to determine the relative importance of the

[The first biologic for rheumatoid arthritis: factors influencing the therapeutic decision].

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Biologics (disease modifying antirheumatic drugs, bDMARD) have been in use in Germany for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) since 2001, usually after failure of at least one conventional synthetic (cs)DMARD. We analyzed temporal changes in factors that influence the decision for either a first bDMARD or a further csDMARD. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We analyzed data from 9513 bDMARD-naive RA patients in the German biologics register RABBIT who switched to a new therapy. For three recruitment periods (2001-2003, 2004-2006 and 2009-2015) factors influencing the therapeut

The epidermal growth factor receptors as biological targets in penile cancer.

Penile cancer is a rare disease, with an incidence that is higher in less developed countries and is in the range of 1 - 10 per 100000 men worldwide. Early diagnosis is essential for cure, as 5 year cancer-specific survival is 90 - 100 % in patients with intraepithelial neoplasms and in those with low-grade superficial tumors without lymphovascular invasion, but it drops to 30% in men with multiple mobile or bilateral inguinal lymph nodes. The EGFR family plays a major role in penile cancer biology, with distinct receptors being involved in HPV-positive and -negative tumors. A number of anti-E

Factors associated with the prescription of "traditional" or "biological" systemic treatment in psoriasis.

Abstract The choice of an adequate psoriasis treatment is critical to good disease management and to overall patient health. It is estimated that about 20-30% of patients requires systemic treatment: "traditional" (methotrexate, acitretina and cyclosporin) or "biological" (etanercept, adalimumab and infliximab). Clinical records of 784 outpatients with psoriasis were analyzed. 51.5% received traditional treatments and 48.5% a biological treatment. Males were 67.8% of patients. Psoriatic arthritis was observed in 37.3%. Females and younger patients were more likely to receive biological treatme

Biological determinants of bleeding in patients with heterozygous factor XI deficiency.

Bleeding risk is not predictable in patients with factor XI (FXI; F11) deficiency. In this prospective study, our objectives were to determine the biological determinants for bleeding risk in patients with heterozygous FXI deficiency. Patients were classified as either bleeding patients or non-bleeding patients by calculating the bleeding score (BS) described for von Willebrand disease. Primary haemostasis, thrombin generation, thromboelastometry, procoagulant proteins, inhibitors, fibrinolysis, and F11 gene mutations were compared between bleeding and non-bleeding patients. What other biologic and mechanical factors might contribute to osteolysis?

An overwhelming consensus exists that wear particles are the primary driving force in aseptic loosening of orthopaedic implants. Nonetheless, considerable evidence has emerged demonstrating that various other factors can modulate the biologic activity of orthopaedic wear particles. Two of the most studied modulating factors are bacterial endotoxins and implant motion.

An in vitro model for assessment of the biological activity of hepatocyte growth factor.

Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) is a multifunctional growth factor with potent wound-healing properties that functions in the healing of chronic injuries. However, there may be a loss of HGF activity in certain chronic cases; this might be indicated by the presence of high amounts of HGF in body fluids and by the elevated expression of the HGF receptor in tissue biopsies. In such cases, a reliable means of assessing the activity of endogenous HGF would be valuable in allowing clinicians to decide if treatment with HGF would be useful. In this study, we developed an in vitro wound assay that use

Heterogeneity of factor VIII antibodies: further immunochemical and biologic studies.

Previous studies using immunoneutralization techniques have shown that many factor VIII inhibitors are IgG antibodies of a single light chain type. We have investigated this apparent homogeneity by immunoneutralization assay and liquid isoelectric focusing of inhibitor fractions from five hemophiliacs and two nonhemophiliacs. By immunoneutralization assay, inhibitors from four hemophiliacs and one nonhemophiliac were exclusively k light chain type: the fifth hemophilic inhibitor was predominantly k1 and the second nonhemophilic inhibitor was a mixture of k and gamma. However, heavy chain subty

Current concepts of somatomedin and other biologically related growth factors.

Since the discovery 20 years ago that the growth-promoting effects of somatotropin are mediated through a serum factor(s), research in this area has rapidly expanded. It is the purpose of this review to bring this area of scientific endeavor into perspective. The first part of this review will deal with aspects of total serum somatomedin activity and its biologic actions and measurements in health and disease. The last part of this review will summarize some of the physical and biologic characteristics of the recently purified "somatomedin-like" substances: somatomedin A, B, and C, NSILA-S (no

Biological Risk Factors for Suicidal Behavior in Children and Adolescents: A Narrative Review.

Suicidal behavior in children and adolescents is a major global public health issue, and suicide is one of the leading causes of death in this age group. While psychosocial determinants of suicidality are well established, understanding its biological risk factors is crucial for targeted prevention and treatment. This review presents a narrative synthesis of recent literature examining current evidence on the biological mechanisms that contribute to youth suicidality. Genetic liability plays a substantial role, often interacting with environmental stressors. Key neurobiological factors include
