War against superbugs, stopping them before they stop us: a biological warfare approach to safeguard European biosecurity.

Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine has transformed both the modern battlefield and the microbial environment surrounding the war-wounded. Explosive injuries, prolonged evacuation, and limited opportunities for early decontamination have contributed to an unprecedented rise in multidrug-resistant organism (MDRO) infections. This paper describes how routine infection prevention and control (IPC) and antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) systems have become inadequate under conflict conditions and how contamination evolves into colonization and then systemic infection as casualties move through th

Cyanogenic glucosides in the biological warfare between plants and insects: the Burnet moth-Birdsfoot trefoil model system.

Cyanogenic glucosides are important components of plant defense against generalist herbivores due to their bitter taste and the release of toxic hydrogen cyanide upon tissue disruption. Some specialized herbivores, especially insects, preferentially feed on cyanogenic plants. Such herbivores have acquired the ability to metabolize cyanogenic glucosides or to sequester them for use in their own predator defense. Burnet moths (Zygaena) sequester the cyanogenic glucosides linamarin and lotaustralin from their food plants (Fabaceae) and, in parallel, are able to carry out de novo synthesis of the

Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) as Artificial Phosphatases: From Biological Phosphate Ester Hydrolysis to Organophosphorus Chemical Warfare Agent Detoxification.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as versatile artificial phosphatases capable of mimicking the Lewis acidic active sites of natural phosphoesterase enzymes. This review traces the development of MOF-based phosphatase catalysts from the fundamental principles of biological phosphate ester hydrolysis to their practical application in degrading organophosphorus pollutants and chemical warfare agents. The mechanistic challenges of activating the phosphorus center are discussed, with particular attention to the roles of metal ion Lewis acidity, coordination environment, and active-site

Feasibility study of electron beam irradiation for decontamination of chemical and biological warfare agent simulants: Dosimetric and operational evaluation.

This study evaluates the feasibility of electron beam (e-beam) irradiation as a sustainable technology with potential applicability to field-oriented decontamination of chemical warfare agents (CWAs) and biological warfare agents (BWAs). For CWAs, a dosimetric analysis revealed that indirect interactions - mediated by hydroxyl radicals (⋅OH) - play a dominant role in the radiolytic degradation of dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP), achieving over 90% removal at doses of 50 kGy and above. Major by-products, including methyl methylphosphonate and methylphosphonic acid, were identified. In contras

Personal protection during resuscitation of casualties contaminated with chemical or biological warfare agents--a survey of medical first responders.

INTRODUCTION: The threat of mass casualties caused by an unconventional terrorist attack is a challenge for the public health system, with special implications for emergency medicine, anesthesia, and intensive care. Advanced life support of patients injured by chemical or biological warfare agents requires an adequate level of personal protection. The aim of this study was to evaluate the personal protection knowledge of emergency physicians and anesthetists who would be at the frontline of the initial health response to a chemical/biological warfare agent incident. METHODS: After institution

Development of quantitative real-time PCR assays for detection and quantification of surrogate biological warfare agents in building debris and leachate.

Evaluation of the fate and transport of biological warfare (BW) agents in landfills requires the development of specific and sensitive detection assays. The objective of the current study was to develop and validate SYBR green quantitative real-time PCR (Q-PCR) assays for the specific detection and quantification of surrogate BW agents in synthetic building debris (SBD) and leachate. Bacillus atrophaeus (vegetative cells and spores) and Serratia marcescens were used as surrogates for Bacillus anthracis (anthrax) and Yersinia pestis (plague), respectively. The targets for SYBR green Q-PCR assay

Cross-institute evaluations of inhibitor-resistant PCR reagents for direct testing of aerosol and blood samples containing biological warfare agent DNA.

Rapid pathogen detection is crucial for the timely introduction of therapeutics. Two groups (one in the United Kingdom and one in the United States) independently evaluated inhibitor-resistant PCR reagents for the direct testing of substrates. In the United Kingdom, a multiplexed Bacillus anthracis (target) and Bacillus subtilis (internal-control) PCR was used to evaluate 4 reagents against 5 PCR inhibitors and down-selected the TaqMan Fast Virus 1-Step master mix (Life Technologies Inc.). In the United States, four real-time PCR assays (targeting B. anthracis, Brucella melitensis, Venezuelan

Applications of docking and molecular dynamic studies on the search for new drugs against the biological warfare agents Bacillus anthracis and Yersinia pestis.

The fear of biological warfare agents (BWA) use by terrorists is the major concern of the security agencies and health authorities worldwide today. The non-existence of vaccines or drugs against most BWA and the possibility of genetic modified strains has turned the search for new drugs to a state of urgency. Fast in silico techniques are, therefore, perfect tools for this task once they can quickly provide structures of several new lead compounds for further experimental work. Here we try to present a mini-review on docking and molecular dynamics simulations studies applied to the drug design

Particle control reduces fine and ultrafine particles greater than HEPA filtration in live operating rooms and kills biologic warfare surrogate.

BACKGROUND: Controlling indoor air quality and the airborne transmission of infectious agents in hospitals is critical. The most hazardous particles and pathogens are not easily eliminated by traditionally passive air cleansing. METHODS: We studied the effect of a novel particle control technology on airborne particulate matter in 2 live real-world operating room settings and on pathogen survival in a microbiology laboratory. RESULTS: Particle control technology reduced operating room particle and pathogen loads by 94.4% in a community hospital operating room, and by 95% in an academic medic

A procedure for differentiating between the intentional release of biological warfare agents and natural outbreaks of disease: its use in analyzing the tularemia outbreak in Kosovo in 1999 and 2000.

The events of 11 September and the subsequent anthrax outbreaks in the USA have opened the world's eyes to the threat posed by terrorist groups, criminal organizations and lone operators who will stop at nothing to achieve their goals. The open or covert use of pathogens and toxins as biological warfare agents can no longer be ruled out. Against this background, the appearance of an unusual disease must be studied in order to clarify whether it is a natural or artificially caused occurrence. This issue was recently raised in discussions with local representatives and relief organizations durin

Iraq's biological weapons. The past as future?

Between 1985 and April 1991, Iraq developed anthrax, botulinum toxin, and aflatoxin for biological warfare; 200 bombs and 25 ballistic missiles laden with biological agents were deployed by the time Operation Desert Storm occurred. Although cause for concern, if used during the Persian Gulf War, Iraq's biological warfare arsenal probably would have been militarily ineffective for 3 reasons: (1) it was small; (2) payload dispersal mechanisms were inefficient; and (3) coalition forces dominated the theater of war (ie, they had overwhelming air superiority and had crippled Iraq's command and cont

A magic sword or a big itch: an historical look at the United States biological weapons programme.

In the late 1950s interest in entomological warfare increased, and literature describing the US biological warfare programmes on the use of the mosquito Aedes aegypti, the vector for transmitting yellow fever, has now been released. Yellow fever was considered as a suitable disease to use in southern regions of the former Soviet Union. The US destroyed its biological weapon stockpiles in the early 1970s. In addition to its offensive biological warfare programme, the US conducted extensive trials to assess its own vulnerability to biological attack. These trials and a later series of threat ana

An evaluation of the potential use of Cryptosporidium species as agents for deliberate release.

INTRODUCTION: We evaluated the potential of Cryptosporidium spp. for intentional transmission as a terrorist tactic in asymmetric conflicts in terms of the recognised optimum conditions for biological warfare. METHODS: Published and widely accepted criteria regarding the optimum conditions for the success of biological warfare based on experience from passive biological warfare research were applied to hypothetical intentional Cryptosporidium spp. transmission. RESULT: The feasibility of the use of Cryptosporidium spp. transmission for terrorist purposes was established. Particularly on trop

The New Battlefield: Food, Water, and the Evolution of Asymmetric Terror.

This review examines the historical development of biological warfare from premodern contamination practices to twentieth-century state programs, post-9/11 bioterrorism, and the renewed prominence of biological risk in the COVID-19 era. Drawing on historical, policy, and public-health scholarship, it shows how disease came to be understood not only as a natural threat but also as a strategic instrument shaped by scientific knowledge, military organization, and administrative secrecy. The review traces the transition from empirical uses of contamination in siege warfare and colonial settings to

[Biological weapons].

Biological weapons are weapons of mass destruction that use pathogens (bacteria, viruses) or the toxins produced by them to target living organisms or to contaminate non-living substances. In the past, biological warfare has been repeatedly used. Anthrax, plague and smallpox are regarded as the most dangerous biological weapons by various institutions. Nowadays it seems quite unlikely that biological warfare will be employed in any military campaigns. However, the possibility remains that biological weapons may be used in acts of bioterrorism. In addition all diseases caused by biological weap

Issues in preparedness for biologic terrorism: a perspective for critical care nursing.

Although the use of microorganisms as weapons is as old a practice as war itself, the sense of our collective vulnerability to these agents has seldom been as great. The events of late 2001 demonstrated that the United States is vulnerable to terrorist attack carried out by highly motivated, organized, funded, and trained individuals. It is our collective good fortune that the perpetrator of the anthrax mailings was not bent on destruction of the scale witnessed on September 11, 2001. Because acute care and critical care nurses are on the forefront of community disease surveillance, they must

Neurobiological weapons.

Biological warfare is a potential threat on the battlefield and in daily life. It is vital for neurologists and other health care practitioners to be familiar with biological and toxic agents that target the nervous system. most illnesses caused by biological warfare agents are not commonly considered neurologic disease, however. Many of these agents (such as anthrax) may present with headache, meningitis, or mental status changes in addition to fever and other symptoms and signs (Tables 2 and 3). Thus, a neurologist may be consulted acutely to aid in diagnosis. Because of the incubation time
