Musculoskeletal simulations are used in many different applications, ranging from the design of wearable robots that interact with humans to the analysis of patients with impaired movement. Here, we introduce OpenSim Moco, a software toolkit for optimizing the motion and control of musculoskeletal models built in the OpenSim modeling and simulation package. OpenSim Moco uses the direct collocation method, which is often faster and can handle more diverse problems than other methods for musculoskeletal simulation. Moco frees researchers from implementing direct collocation themselves-which typi

Epithelial sheet integrity is robustly maintained during morphogenesis, which is essential to shape organs and embryos. While maintaining the planar monolayer in three-dimensional space, cells dynamically flow via rearranging their connections between each other. However, little is known about how cells maintain the plane sheet integrity in three-dimensional space and provide cell flow in the in-plane sheet. In this study, using a three-dimensional vertex model, we demonstrate that apical junctional fluctuations allow stable cell rearrangements while ensuring monolayer integrity. In addition t

In gait studies body pose reconstruction (BPR) techniques have been widely explored, but no previous protocols have been developed for speed skating, while the peculiarities of the skating posture and technique do not automatically allow for the transfer of the results of those explorations to kinematic skating data. The aim of this paper is to determine the best procedure for body pose reconstruction and inverse dynamics of speed skating, and to what extend this choice influences the estimation of joint power. The results show that an eight body segment model together with a global optimizati

An instrumented palpation sensor, designed for measuring the dynamic modulus of tissue in vivo, has been developed and trialled on ex vivo whole prostate glands. The sensor consists of a flexible membrane sensor/actuator with an embedded strain gauge and is actuated using a dynamically varying airflow at frequencies of 1 and 5 Hz. The device was calibrated using an indentation stiffness measurement rig and gelatine samples with a range of static modulus similar to that reported in the literature for prostate tissue. The glands were removed from patients with diagnosed prostate cancer scheduled

Trauma to the pelvis is debilitating and often needs fixation intervention. In 58% of patients with this trauma, the injuries can lead to permanent disability, preventing the return to jobs. Of all unsuccessful fixation procedures, 42% are caused by failures of the method, sometimes due to mobilization during healing. Patients would benefit by havibridgetv@comcast.netng fixation hardware in place that enabled ambulation. During walking the bilateral hip joint plus leg and trunk muscle forces, including those from hip motion, can induce torsion into the pelvic ring and across the joint cartilag

The eardrum separates the external ear from the middle ear and it is responsible to convert the acoustical energy into mechanical energy. It is divided by pars tensa and pars flaccida. The aim of this work is to analyze the susceptibility of the four quadrants of the pars tensa under negative pressure, to different lamina propria fibers distribution. The development of associated ear pathology, in particular the formation of retraction pockets, is also evaluated. To analyze these effects, a computational biomechanical model of the tympano-ossicular chain was constructed using computerized tomo

The transverse carpal ligament (TCL) is a component of the flexor pulley system of the wrist, keeping the flexor tendons in place by resisting their volar displacement. The purpose of this study was to investigate the in vivo biomechanical interaction between the TCL and flexor tendons in response to tendon tensioning with the wrist at various postures. In eight healthy subjects, the flexor digitorum superficialis and profundus tendons were tensioned by isometrically applying loads (5, 10, and 15N) to the index finger while the wrist posture was at 20° extension, neutral, 20° flexion, and 40°

Fish, reptiles, and mammals can possess flexible dermal armor for protection. Here we seek to find the means by which Nature derives its protection by examining the scales from several fish (Atractosteus spatula, Arapaima gigas, Polypterus senegalus, Morone saxatilis, Cyprinius carpio), and osteoderms from armadillos, alligators, and leatherback turtles. Dermal armor has clearly been developed by convergent evolution in these different species. In general, it has a hierarchical structure with collagen fibers joining more rigid units (scales or osteoderms), thereby increasing flexibility withou

BACKGROUND: Deterioration of postoperative local biomechanical environment is a primary contributor to varus deformity of the femoral head in patients with intertrochanteric fractures treated with proximal femoral nail antirotation (PFNA) fixation. Theoretically, increasing the number of threaded anchors can optimize the local biomechanical environment and enhance the fixation stability. According to this principle, a larger gap between the intramedullary nail and the surrounding femoral shaft at the distal locking screw may compromise fixation stability by reducing the number of thread anchor

Biofilms are living materials composed of a cross-linked polymer matrix embedding active bacterial cells, whose mechanical behavior emerges from the collective organization of cells within the matrix. While significant progress has been made in characterizing their linear viscoelastic properties, this regime captures only a limited subset of their mechanical behavior, and the most relevant processes-adaptation and detachment-occur at large deformations. Experimental studies reveal a rich spectrum of nonlinear behaviors, yet a predictive description linking microscopic structure to macroscopic

Male stress urinary incontinence (SUI), the involuntary leakage of urine due to physical exertion, is commonly managed by penile clamps. However, there is currently no methodology to quantify how effectively penile clamps prevent urine leakage while preserving blood flow without relying on patient-dependent studies. Our benchtop model provides a controlled, reproducible framework for comparing penile clamp performance under simplified physiological conditions, offering comparative data on clamp efficacy. Force applied by the clamps was determined via a load cell to estimate contact stress. Sep

Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is a polar aprotic solvent used in a wide range of applications, including uses as a drug and in drug delivery, as a solvent for fluorescent dyes, and in enzymatic reactions that process DNA. Consequently, many assays contain low concentrations (≤10%) of DMSO. While it is well known that DMSO lowers the melting temperature of DNA, its effects on DNA conformations and mechanical properties below the melting temperature are unclear. Here, we use complementary single-molecule techniques to probe DNA in the presence of 0-60% DMSO. Magnetic tweezers force-extension measure

Rapid head motion causes the brain to deform, which may lead to acute and chronic consequences to normal brain health and function. Since the risk and severity of brain injury correlates with brain strain, computational and physical models of the brain response to impact are commonly used to assess risk and evaluate safety devices in silico. Most physical head surrogates that are used for equipment evaluation, however, are simplified and lack internal measures of brain deformation, relying instead on the interpretation of the resulting head kinematics to predict injury. Developing a more biofi

OBJECTIVES: An alternative option was proposed regarding the prosthetic rehabilitation of a fully edentulous mandible using only four implants. The aim was to reduce the stiffness of the prosthetic framework. To that end, the alternative option consists of a prosthetic framework optimized with a porous structure. Mechanical differences were analyzed between non-prosthetic mandible and restored mandible either with a conventional bulk titanium framework or with this alternative option. The non-prosthetic mandible corresponds to the mandible in its natural state, without prosthesis. This will be

Synthetic bone models such as polyurethane (PU) foam are a well-established substitute to cadaveric bone for screw pull-out testing; however, little attention has been given to the effect of PU foam anisotropy on orthopaedic implant testing. Compressive and screw pull-out performance in three PU foam densities; 0.16 g/cm3 (PCF 10), 0.32 g/cm3 (PCF 20) and 0.64 g/cm3 (PCF 40) were performed in each of the X, Y or Z orientations. The maximum compressive force, stiffness in the linear region, maximum stress and modulus were determined for all compression tests. Pedicle screws were inserted and pu

OBJECTIVE: Accurate estimation of stiffness across anatomical levels (i.e., joint, muscle, and tendon) in vivo has long been a challenge in biomechanics. Recent advances in electromyography (EMG)-driven musculoskeletal modeling have allowed the non-invasive estimation of stiffness during dynamic joint rotations. Nevertheless, validation has been limited to the joint level due to a lack of simultaneous in vivo experimental measurements of muscle and tendon stiffness.
METHODS: With a focus on the triceps surae, we employed a novel perturbation-based experimental technique informed by dynamometr

Biomechanics of the human pelvis and the associated implants are still a medical and engineering debated topic. Today, no biomechanical testing setup is dedicated to pelvis testing and associated reconstructive implants with accepted clinical relevance. This paper uses the computational experiment design procedure to numerically design a biomechanical test stand that emulates the pelvis physiological gait loading. The numerically designed test stand reduces the 57 muscles and joints' contact forces iteratively to only four force actuators. Two hip joints' contact forces and two equivalent musc

INTRODUCTION: Intermaxillary elastics are orthodontic resources widely used in various malocclusions. Their main advantages are low cost, easy insertion and removal by patients, and application versatility. As main disadvantages, we can highlight the need for cooperation from patients and the side effects normally present in treatments with this resource. Knowledge of the biomechanics involved in the use of intermaxillary elastics is essential to take full advantage of the desired effects and avoid unwanted effects in their use.
OBJECTIVE: Therefore, the objective of this article is to descri

Three-dimensional force plates are important tools for biomechanics discovery and sports performance practice. However, currently, available 3D force plates lack portability and are often cost-prohibitive. To address this, a recently discovered 3D force sensor technology was used in the fabrication of a prototype force plate. Thirteen participants performed bodyweight and weighted lunges and squats on the prototype force plate and a standard 3D force plate positioned in series to compare forces measured by both force plates and validate the technology. For the lunges, there was excellent agree

Dynamic balance control during human walking can be described by the distance between the mediolateral (ML) extrapolated center of mass (XCoM) position and the base of support, the margin of stability (MoS). The ML center of mass (CoM) position during treadmill walking can be estimated based on kinematic data (marker-based method) and a combination of ground reaction forces and center of pressure positions (GRF-based method). Here, we compare a GRF-based method with a full-body marker-based method for estimating the ML CoM, ML XCoM and ML MoS. Fifteen healthy adults walked on a dual-belt tread
