Biosensors for Parkinson's Disease: Where Are We Now, and Where Do We Need to Go?

Parkinson's Disease is the second most common neurological disease in the United States, yet there is no cure, no pinpointed cause, and no definitive diagnostic procedure. Parkinson's is typically diagnosed when patients present with motor symptoms such as slowness of movement and tremors. However, none of these are specific to Parkinson's, and a confident diagnosis of Parkinson's is typically only achieved when 60-80% of dopaminergic neurons are no longer functioning, at which point much of the damage to the brain is irreversible. This Perspective details ongoing efforts and accomplishments i

Advancements in Cortisol Detection: From Conventional Methods to Next-Generation Technologies for Enhanced Hormone Monitoring.

The hormone cortisol, released as the end-product of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, has a well-characterized circadian rhythm that enables an allostatic response to external stressors. When the pattern of secretion is disrupted, cortisol levels are chronically elevated, contributing to diseases such as heart attacks, strokes, mental health disorders, and diabetes. The diagnosis of chronic stress and stress related disorders depends upon accurate measurement of cortisol levels; currently, it is quantified using mass spectroscopy or immunoassay, in specialized laboratories with t

From sensing interactions to controlling the interactions: a novel approach to obtain biological transistors for specific and label-free immunosensing.

Antibody-antigen interactions are shaped by the solution pH level, ionic strength, and electric fields, if present. In biological field-effect transistors (BioFETs), the interactions take place at the sensing area in which the pH level, ionic strength and electric fields are determined by the Poisson-Boltzmann equation and the boundary conditions at the solid-solution interface and the potential applied at the solution electrode. The present study demonstrates how a BioFET solution electrode potential affects the sensing area double layer pH level, ionic strength, and electric fields and in th

Research and development of taste sensors as a novel analytical tool.

Gustatory and olfactory receptors receive multiple chemical substances of different types simultaneously, but they can barely discriminate one chemical species from others. In this article, we describe a device used to measure taste, i.e., taste sensors. Toko and colleagues developed a taste sensor equipped with multiarray electrodes using a lipid/polymer membrane as the transducer in 1989. This sensor has a concept of global selectivity to decompose the characteristics of a chemical substance into taste qualities and to quantify them. The use of taste sensors has spread around the world. More

What Is Left for Real-Life Lactate Monitoring? Current Advances in Electrochemical Lactate (Bio)Sensors for Agrifood and Biomedical Applications.

Monitoring of lactate is spreading from the evident clinical environment, where its role as a biomarker is notorious, to the agrifood ambit as well. In the former, lactate concentration can serve as a useful indicator of several diseases (e.g., tumour development and lactic acidosis) and a relevant value in sports performance for athletes, among others. In the latter, the spotlight is placed on the food control, bringing to the table meaningful information such as decaying product detection and stress monitoring of species. No matter what purpose is involved, electrochemical (bio)sensors stand

New trends in methyl salicylate sensing and their implications in agriculture.

Methyl salicylate (MeSal) is an organic compound present in plants during stress events and is therefore a key marker for early plant disease detection. It has usually been detected by conventional methods that require bulky and costly equipment, such as gas chromatography or mass spectrometry. Currently, however, chemical sensors provide an alternative for MeSal monitoring, showing good performance for its determination in the vapour or liquid phase. The most promising concepts used in MeSal determination include sensors based on electrochemical and conductometric principles, although other t

Cyanide detection using a substrate-regenerating, peroxidase-based biosensor.

An enzyme-based, dual working electrode system is described for the sensing of cyanide. Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) is incorporated as the sensing element. A continuous monitoring of oxidative activity by the enzyme results through the generation and regeneration of substrates at the electrode surfaces. Thus, HRP is oxidized by hydrogen peroxide generated from dissolved oxygen, at the primary electrode, and then reduced through the secondary electrode by mediated electron transfer using ferrocene as a carrier. Ferrocene regeneration at this electrode is proportional to the intrinsic activity

Electrochemical biosensors for the detection of urinary tract infections.

Electrochemical biosensors have emerged as promising tools to address major limitations of conventional urinary tract infection (UTI) diagnosis, which depends on slow culture and low-specificity dipsticks. By transducing specific biorecognition events into electrical signals, these platforms can deliver rapid, sensitive, and potentially point of care results directly from urine. This narrative review synthesizes developments in pathogen directed and host response based electrochemical biosensors for UTI detection. Biosensors and Biomarkers for the Detection of Motion Sickness.

Motion sickness (MS) is a prevalent syndrome that predominantly occurs during transportation and virtual reality (VR). The absence of reliable indicators and detection methods makes precise diagnosis difficult. Biomarker concentrations and trends may imply individual susceptibility, symptom classification, and the specific progression of MS. It is therefore essential to explore biosensors capable of providing sensitive, accurate, and real-time monitoring of biomarkers. This review provides a summary of the pathogenesis and biological pathways underlying MS, followed by an examination of biomar
