[Suberosis and bird fancier's disease: comparative study of radiological, functional and bronchoalveolar characteristics profile].

Extrinsic Allergic Alveolitis (EAA) is an immunologically mediated interstitial lung disease that may result from repeated inhalation of many different environmental agents. Heterogeneity of the clinical presentation and bronchoalveolar lavage profiles has been described, possibly related to different occupational exposures. The aim of our study was to compare bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), clinical, functional and radiological characteristics of the two most frequent forms of EAA seen in our practice: Suberosis and Bird Fancier's Disease (BFD). We included 81 patients with Suberosis, wi

A bird's eye view on the use of whole exome sequencing in rare congenital ophthalmic diseases.

Phenotypic and genotypic heterogeneity in congenital ocular diseases, especially in anterior segment dysgenesis (ASD), have created challenges for proper diagnosis and classification of diseases. Over the last decade, genomic research has indeed boosted our understanding in the molecular basis of ASD and genes associated with both autosomal dominant and recessive patterns of inheritance have been described with a wide range of expressivity. Here we describe the molecular characterization of a cohort of 162 patients displaying isolated or syndromic congenital ocular dysgenesis. Samples were ana

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease-Functional Dyspepsia Overlap: Do Birds of a Feather Flock Together?

INTRODUCTION: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and functional dyspepsia (FD) are 2 of the most prevalent upper gastrointestinal (GI) disorders in the Western world. Previous Rome definitions excluded patients with predominant heartburn from the definition of FD because they were considered to have GERD. However, more recent studies showed that heartburn and acid regurgitation are also common symptoms in patients with FD. The aim of this study is to provide an overview of the prevalence of overlap between GERD and FD, the underlying pathophysiology and implications for treatment. METHODS

Rapid evolution of disease resistance is accompanied by functional changes in gene expression in a wild bird.

Wild organisms are under increasing pressure to adapt rapidly to environmental changes. Predicting the impact of these changes on natural populations requires an understanding of the speed with which adaptive phenotypes can arise and spread, as well as of the underlying mechanisms. However, our understanding of these parameters is poor in natural populations. Here we use experimental and molecular approaches to investigate the recent emergence of resistance in eastern populations of North American house finches (Carpodacus mexicanus) to Mycoplasma galliseptum (MG), a severe conjunctivitis-caus

Birds, migration and emerging zoonoses: west nile virus, lyme disease, influenza A and enteropathogens.

Wild birds are important to public health because they carry emerging zoonotic pathogens, either as a reservoir host or by dispersing infected arthropod vectors. In addition, bird migration provides a mechanism for the establishment of new endemic foci of disease at great distances from where an infection was acquired. Birds are central to the epidemiology of West Nile virus (WNV) because they are the main amplifying host of the virus in nature. The initial spread of WNV in the U.S. along the eastern seaboard coincided with a major bird migration corridor. The subsequent rapid movement of the

[Role of ticks of the species Argas persicus Oken, 1818, in the epizootology of pullorum disease in birds].

Studies was the role played by ticks of the Argas persicus species in the epizootiology of pullorum disease in birds. Use was made of microbiologic, radiometric, and autoradiographic methods to follow up the period of carrying Salmonella gallinarum-pullorum, the localization and routes of elimination of the causative agent as well as the possibility of transmitting the infection by ticks. The pathogen was found to persist in the alimentary tract for a long time (at least 8 months--as long as the observation period lasted) without altering its pathogenicity, being excreted through the feces. No

Diseases and Mortality in Confiscated Birds and Reptiles Housed in a Wildlife Rescue Center Under the CITES Directive.

The number of confiscated CITES-listed animals has increased dramatically worldwide, creating significant health, logistical, and resource challenges for responsible authorities. Rescue centers represent a scientific and humanitarian response to this challenge, providing solutions through rehabilitation, research, and environmental education. This postmortem survey provides information on disease and mortality during a four-year period, in confiscated CITES-listed birds and reptiles housed in an authorized rescue center. A total of 29 animals (17 birds and 12 reptiles) were examined by necrops

Beak and feather disease virus variant-dependent antibody reactivity in naturally infected psittacine birds.

Beak and feather disease virus (BFDV, species Circovirus parrot) is the causative agent of psittacine beak and feather disease (PBFD), characterised primary by death of nestlings, feather loss and presumed immunosuppression in parrots worldwide. BFDV shows marked genetic heterogeneity, particularly in the open reading frame 2 (ORF2) encoding the capsid protein (Cap), but the impact of this diversity on antibody recognition has not been systematically assessed. In this study, we used seven recombinant Cap proteins derived from ORF2 variants selected to reflect the diversity of BFDV genotypes ci

A Bird's-Eye View of the Pathophysiologic Role of the Human Urobiota in Health and Disease: Can We Modulate It?

For a long time, urine has been considered sterile in physiological conditions, thanks to the particular structure of the urinary tract and the production of uromodulin or Tamm-Horsfall protein (THP) by it. More recently, thanks to the development and use of new technologies, i.e., next-generation sequencing and expanded urine culture, the identification of a microbial community in the urine, the so-called urobiota, became possible. Major phyla detected in the urine are represented by Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Proteobacteria, and Actinobacteria. Particularly, the female urobiota is largely re

Marek's Disease in Backyard Chickens, A Study of Pathologic Findings and Viral Loads in Tumorous and Nontumorous Birds.

Marek's disease (MD) is a major cause of mortality in backyard chickens. The diagnosis of MD is complex, however, and knowledge of Marek's disease virus (MDV) in spontaneous field cases such as in backyard chickens is largely unknown. In this study, 40 backyard chickens with a presumptive MD diagnosis based on histologic lymphoid infiltrations in peripheral nerves with and without lymphomas were investigated. Twenty-eight of the birds were submitted to the diagnostic laboratory for disease explorations, and 12 chickens were from a flock in which some members demonstrated anisocoria and pupil i

[Bird-related chronic hypersensitivity pneuminitis demonstrating the fluctuation of disease activity accompanied with environmental changes].

We report a case of bird-related chronic hypersensitivity pneuminitis exhibiting the fluctuation of serum markers for interstitial lung disease along with the changes in life environment. A 65-year-old man had had an abnormal chest radiograph for 2 years and had complained of a non-productive cough. He had had 30 parakeets 20 years previously and had used feather products for 15 years. In autumn and early winter wild birds had visited persimmons trees in the neighboring garden. Antibodies to bird-related antigens in the broncho-alveolar lavage fluids and sera were positive and the thoracoscopi

A Bird's-Eye View of the Wings Apart-Like Protein in Cell Biology and Implications for Disease and Therapeutics.

Wings apart-like protein (WAPL) has emerged as a key player in maintaining genome integrity through its regulation of cohesin dynamics, which govern chromatin architecture and gene expression. WAPL mainly acts as a cohesin release factor and ensures proper chromosomal segregation during mitosis by promoting sister chromatid resolution. Owing to its prominent role in cell biology, WAPL dysregulation can cause genomic instability and disrupt chromosomal cohesion, leading to diseases such as cancer. The precise regulatory mechanisms controlling WAPL activity, including post-translational modifica

Diagnostic value of plasma biochemistry, haematology, radiography and endoscopic visualisation for hepatic disease in psittacine birds.

BACKGROUND: Hepatic disease in psittacine birds is common but challenging to diagnose. This retrospective study evaluates the diagnostic value of plasma biochemistry, haematology, radiography and endoscopic visualisation in psittaciforms with suspected hepatic disease that underwent endoscopic liver biopsy. METHODS: Clinical records of 28 companion psittaciforms from a veterinary teaching hospital (2007-2016) were reviewed. Diagnostic results were categorised as abnormal or normal and compared with histopathology for agreement or disagreement. Statistical significance was determined by kappa

Wild Birds in Romania Are More Exposed to West Nile Virus Than to Newcastle Disease Virus.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the seroprevalence of West Nile virus (WNV) and Newcastle disease virus (NDV) in wild and domestic birds from Romania. During 2011-2014, 159 plasma samples from wild birds assigned to 11 orders, 27 families, and 61 species and from 21 domestic birds (Gallus gallus domesticus, Anas platyrhynchos domesticus) were collected. The sera were assayed by two commercial competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (cELISA) kits for antibodies against WNV and NDV. We found a high prevalence of WNV antibodies in both domestic (19.1%) and wild (32.1%) birds captured

"Bird biting" mosquitoes and human disease: a review of the role of Culex pipiens complex mosquitoes in epidemiology.

The transmission of vector-borne pathogens is greatly influenced by the ecology of their vector, which is in turn shaped by genetic ancestry, the environment, and the hosts that are fed on. One group of vectors, the mosquitoes in the Culex pipiens complex, play key roles in the transmission of a range of pathogens including several viruses such as West Nile and St. Louis encephalitis viruses, avian malaria (Plasmodium spp.), and filarial worms. The Cx. pipiens complex includes Culex pipiens pipiens with two forms, pipiens and molestus, Culex pipiens pallens, Culex quinquefasciatus, Culex austr
