Examining the association between short interpregnancy interval births and the type and timing of postpartum long acting reversible contraception.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the type (intrauterine device or implant) or timing (immediately postpartum vs interval) of postpartum long-acting reversible contraception was associated with a reduction in short interpregnancy interval births. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using linked Medicaid claims and birth certificate data from Oregon and South Carolina, 2010 to 2018. Our primary outcome was short interpregnancy interval, defined as repeat pregnancy within 18 months of the index delivery. We determined postpartum contraceptive method and timing of receipt. To a

Prolonged PR Interval at Birth Predicting the High Occurrence of Fatal Atrioventricular Block in Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome.

Infants with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) are at high mortality especially when they are associated with bradyarrhythmias. However, the risk factor of developing high-grade atrioventricular block (HAVB) is still unclear. Seventy-three patients with HLHS in our institutions from 2002 to 2011 were enrolled. The survival rate was assessed by the anatomical types, treatments, occurrence of HAVB, severe tricuspid regurgitation (TR), and restrictive atrial septal defect (ASD) along with electrocardiogram findings at birth. There were 23 (32%) cardiogenic and 7 (10%) non-cardiogenic deaths.

Relationship between the time interval from antenatal corticosteroid administration until preterm birth and the occurrence of respiratory morbidity.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between neonatal respiratory morbidity and the interval between antenatal corticosteroids (ACS) administration and birth. STUDY DESIGN: We performed a retrospective cohort study among women who had received ACS and delivered at <34 weeks of gestation. We categorized these women in 4 groups: ACS-to-delivery interval of 0-7, 8-14, 15-21, and 22-28 days. Multivariable logistic regression analysis assessed the association between the ACS-to-delivery interval and neonatal respiratory morbidity. RESULTS: We included 254 neonates.

Delayed interval delivery after intrauterine infection and immature birth of twin 1--a case report and literature review.

We report a case of delayed interval delivery in a twin pregnancy complicated by rupture of membranes, intrauterine infection and birth of one twin at 21 weeks gestation. Tocolysis combined with antibiotics and corticosteroids successfully prolonged pregnancy for 73 days, allowing the second twin to mature and reach viability. At 31.5 weeks gestation, a 1890 g healthy male neonate was born with good Apgar scores. His postnatal course was uneventful. A literature review of several other cases of delayed interval delivery is presented. When multifetal pregnancies are complicated by immature birt

Primipaternity in multiparas as a predominant high risk factor for preeclampsia over prolonged birth intervals: A study of 33,000 singleton pregnancies in Reunion Island.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the relative importance of changing paternity ("primipaternity", direct inquiry with patients) in multiparas versus prolonged birth/pregnancy interval as risk factors for preeclampsia (PE) by a logistic regression model comparing the adjusted odds ratios of both exposures. DESIGN: Assessment of all consecutive singleton deliveries (from 22 weeks onwards) at South-Reunion University's maternity (Reunion Island, Indian Ocean) over 23 years (2001-2023) using an epidemiological perinatal database on obstetrical factors (264 items in total, of which, chronic or gestational

Risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes associated with short and long birth intervals in Bangladesh: evidence from six Bangladesh Demographic and Health Surveys, 1996-2014.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the effect of short (<36 months) and long (≥60 months) birth intervals on adverse pregnancy outcomes in Bangladesh. DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: We analysed data from six Bangladesh Demographic and Health Surveys (1996-1997, 1999-2000, 2004, 2007, 2011 and 2014). We included all singleton non-first live births, most recently born to mothers within 5 years preceding each survey (n=21 382). We defined birth interval according to previous research which suggests that a birth interval between 36 and 59 months is the most ideal interval. Bivariate and multivariable analy

Fecundity of daughters born after short, intermediate, or long birth intervals. An analysis of family reconstitutions from The Netherlands, late 19th-early 20th century.

In an historical cohort study, we compared the reproductive performances of women born after short (< 14 completed months), intermediate (21-32 completed months), and long (> 39 completed months) birth intervals. Of the initial study base, comprising family reconstitutions of 1,425 women born between 1873 and 1902 in or around Rotterdam (The Netherlands) and married before age 45, a large portion (data of 1,001 women born between 1888 and 1902) was uninformative because of (unintended) selection on birth control behavior. Among the remaining 424 women, those born after very short birth interva

Organization of the proximal, orbital segment of the infraorbital nerve at multiple intervals after axotomy at birth: a quantitative electron microscopic study in rat.

Although much is known of the central consequences of infraorbital nerve (ION) transection at birth, little is known about the effects of this lesion on the organization of the ION itself. To advance our understanding of how deafferentation alters the developing trigeminal neuraxis, 19 newborn rats were subjected to left ION section and perfused 1, 2, 4, 7, 17, or 90 days later. Left IONs were removed in the orbit proximal to the nerve injury site, and axon numbers, types, and fasciculation patterns were assessed with light and electron microscopic methods. Complete axon counts demonstrated th

Assessing the effects of duration of birth interval on adverse pregnancy outcomes in sub-Saharan Africa: a propensity score-matched analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Unlike high-income countries, sub-Saharan African countries have the highest burden of adverse pregnancy outcomes such as abortion, stillbirth, low birth weight and preterm births. The WHO set optimal birth spacing as a key strategy to improve pregnancy outcomes. Estimating the impact of short and long birth intervals on adverse pregnancy outcomes based on an observational study like the Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) is prone to selection bias. Therefore, we used the propensity score-matched (PSM) analysis to estimate the actual impact of short and long birth intervals on adv

The interval between births and the risk of recurrent preeclampsia among predominantly high risk women in urban tertiary care center.

INTRODUCTION: Women with a history of preeclampsia have a higher risk of recurrent preeclampsia. This study sought to ascertain the relationship between the interbirth interval and the risk of recurrent preeclampsia and difference in angiogenic markers between the two groups. METHODS: Data was collected from an ongoing cohort study of women with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) enrolled at the admission to the labor and delivery floor. From this dataset, multigravida women with a prior diagnosis of preeclampsia were identified and compared to women with no prior history of preeclamps

Time interval analysis of ductus venosus and cardiac cycles in relation with umbilical artery pH at birth in fetal growth restriction.

BACKGROUND: The aims of this study were to evaluate the time intervals of flow velocity waveforms (FVW) of ductus venosus (DV) and cardiac cycles, as well as the pulsatility index of DV-FVW (DV-PI), in correlation with umbilical artery (UA) pH at birth in fetal growth restriction (FGR) complicated with placental insufficiency. METHODS: Data were retrospectively retrieved from pregnancies complicated by FGR. FGR was defined as an estimated fetal weight below - 2.0 S.D. with an elevated UA-PI. Time interval assessments of DV-FVW were as follows: the duration of systolic wave was divided by the

Recurrence of preeclampsia: effects of gestational age at delivery of the first pregnancy, body mass index, paternity, and interval between births.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to establish estimates for recurrence risk of preeclampsia based on gestational age at delivery of the first pregnancy complicated by preeclampsia and to determine whether interbirth interval, paternity, and body mass index (BMI) modify that risk in women with prior preeclampsia. STUDY DESIGN: A population-based, cohort study was conducted using data from Missouri maternally linked birth certificates. The cohort included women who had 2 singleton births between 1989 and 1997: 6157 women with preeclampsia and 97,703 women without preeclampsia at the ti

Pre-pregnancy BMI modifies the optimal interpregnancy interval for preventing preterm birth: a population-based retrospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) modifies the association between interpregnancy interval (IPI) and preterm birth (PTB) risk and to determine the BMI-specific IPI associated with the lowest PTB risk. METHODS: This population-based retrospective cohort study utilized data from 127,542 multiparous women in Dongguan, China (2014-2024). We employed two complementary approaches: a generalized additive mixed model and generalized estimating equations with restricted cubic splines, to examine the interaction between IPI and pre-pregnancy BMI on PTB. The robustnes

Association between inter-pregnancy interval and risk of adverse birth outcomes in subsequent pregnancy: A retrospective study from Jordan.

BACKGROUND: Adverse birth outcomes, such as preterm birth and low birth weight (LBW), are leading causes of neonatal morbidity and mortality. In this study, we aimed to estimate the association between inter-pregnancy interval (IPI) and the risks of adverse birth outcomes in a subsequent pregnancy. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis involving 630 mothers who delivered a singleton live infant at a leading tertiary hospital in northern Jordan from March to August 2021. Outcome variables were preterm birth (<37 weeks of gestation) and LBW (<2.5 kg). Using multivariable logistic regre

Duration of birth interval and its predictors among reproductive-age women in Ethiopia: Gompertz gamma shared frailty modeling.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization recommended a minimum of 33 months between consecutive live births to reduce the incidence of adverse pregnancy outcomes. Poorly spaced pregnancies are associated with poor maternal and child health outcomes such as low birth weight, stillbirth, uterine rupture, neonatal mortality, maternal mortality, child malnutrition, and maternal hemorrhage. However, there was limited evidence on the duration of birth interval and its predictors among reproductive-age women in Ethiopia. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the duration of birth interval and i
