Early childhood development under son preference in Vietnam: The role of child gender and birth order.

Vietnam has experienced more than two decades of elevated prenatal sex selection due to persistent son preference, yet little is known about whether gender disparities emerge among surviving children in early childhood. This study examines gender differences in early childhood development (ECD) among Vietnamese children aged 24-59 months and investigates whether birth order and family context - key markers of son preference - moderate these differences. Using nationally representative data from the 2020-2021 Vietnam Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey, ECD was assessed across health, learning, a

Testing Fraternal Birth Order Effects and Antagonistic Effects for Homosexual Men: Power Comparison of Various Methods.

Research on the biological determinants of male homosexual preference has long realized that the older brother effect (FBOE, i.e., a higher fraternal birth rank of homosexuals) and the antagonist effect (AE, i.e., more fertile women have a higher chance of having a homosexual son) can both generate family data where homosexual men have more siblings and more older siblings than heterosexual men. Various statistical approaches were proposed in the recent literature to evaluate whether the action of FBOE or AE could be discriminated from empirical data, by controlling for the other effect. Here,

Implementation of an Automatic Stop Order and Initial Antibiotic Exposure in Very Low Birth Weight Infants.

Objective To evaluate if an antibiotic automatic stop order (ASO) changed early antibiotic exposure (use in the first 7 days of life) or clinical outcomes in very low birth weight (VLBW) infants. Study Design We compared birth characteristics, early antibiotic exposure, morbidity, and mortality data in VLBW infants (with birth weight <= 1500 g) born 2 years before (pre-ASO group, n = 313) to infants born in the 2 years after (post-ASO, n = 361) implementation of an ASO guideline. Early antibiotic exposure was quantified by days of therapy (DOT) and antibiotic use > 48 hours. Secondary outcomes

Sibship size, sibling sex ratio, birth order, and parental age in homosexual and nonhomosexual gender dysphorics.

This study investigated whether demographic variables previously reported to differentiate ordinary homosexuals from heterosexuals also differentiate gender-dysphoric homosexuals from gender-dysphoric persons with other sexual orientations. Subjects were outpatients aged 16 and older who were referred by physicians to a specialty clinic for the assessment of gender identity disorders. The subjects were divided into three groups: 204 homosexual women, 193 homosexual men, and 273 nonhomosexual men; the last category included men sexually attracted to females, to both sexes, and to neither sex. The Interplay of Cesarean-Section Delivery and First-Birth Order as Risk Factors in Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

BACKGROUND: Childhood B-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia (BCP-ALL) has been associated with early-life exposures, including birth by cesarean section (C-section), and a deficit of social exposure (first child). These exposures as proxies for microbiome acquisition in infancy are essential to prime the immune system and restrain later dysregulated immune responses that can trigger ALL in susceptible individuals. We tested risk factors pertaining to immune stimulation that may impact BCP-ALL development. METHODS: Cases comprised 1,126 children (0-12 years) with ALL (BCP-ALL: 78.5%) f

The effect of piglet vitality, birth order, and blood lactate on the piglet growth performances and preweaning survival.

BACKGROUND: Litter size is going up in modern pig production. Due to large litter size and increased farrowing duration, newborn piglets, during parturition, can suffer from asphyxiation. This alters their blood energy parameters and can contribute to their reduced vitality at birth, which is detrimental to their growth performance and survival. We aimed to evaluate the effects of vitality score, piglets' umbilical cord blood lactate, glucose, and butyrate, and birth order on growth performance and the preweaning mortality of piglets. RESULTS: The more vital (vitality score 2, VS2) piglets ha

Sibship size, birth order and risk of nasopharyngeal carcinoma and infectious mononucleosis: a nationwide study in Sweden.

BACKGROUND: The aetiology of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) remains enigmatic in endemic and non-endemic areas. Early-life infection with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) may predispose to NPC development, whereas delayed primary infection with EBV may cause infectious mononucleosis (IM). METHODS: We used Swedish population and health registers to investigate whether potential indicators of early EBV infection, such as birth order, sibship size, maternal age and paternal age, are related to the subsequent risks for NPC and IM. We conducted two nested case-control studies, one for each health outcome,

The effect of parental age, birth order and other variables on early childhood mortality: a Caribbean example.

The 4275 births to women of native ancestry that took place on the island of St Barthélemy, French West Indies between 1878 and 1970 were analyzed according to the sex of the child, the year of birth, maternal age, maternal parity, paternal age and the number of children the father already had to determine the effects of these variables on rates of perinatal death, death before age 1 and death before age 5. The year of birth, the number of children the father already had, and maternal parity influenced death before age 1 and death before age 5. The sex of the child also influenced the probabil

Genetics of acheiropodia ("The handless and footless families of Brazil"): IV. Sex ratio, consanguinity and birth order.

The sex ratio among acheiropods is shown to be not significantly different from the sex ratio among their normal sibs, as well as among other segments of the family (parental sibships, cousin sibships and other sibships). The frequency of consanguineous marriages among the parents of acheiropods (82%) is one of the highest thus far reported among parents of individuals affected with rare autosomal recessive anomalies or diseases. No evidence was found of any overall positive or negative birth order effect on the incidence of acheiropodia. These results further strengthen the hypothesis of a si

The effects of birth order on neonatal outcomes in early-preterm, late-preterm and term twin infants.

Objectives: Birth order is one of the main factors that influences the neonatal outcome of twins. However, there is little prior data regarding the effect of birth order under different clinical circumstances. This study investigates the effect of birth order on the neonatal outcomes of twins delivered during early-preterm, late-preterm and term gestations according to chorionicity, delivery mode and indication for delivery. Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study of women with twin pregnancies delivered at 24-40 weeks of gestation between 1995 and 2014. We excluded twin pregnancies with

A population-based study of cancer risk in twins: relationships to birth order and sexes of the twin pair.

One thousand and sixty-three twins with cancer whose co-twin was born alive were identified among patients born since September 1939 with cancers incident in England and Wales during 1971-1984 at childhood and young adult ages. Site-specific risks of cancer were analysed in relation to birth order within the twinship and sexes of the twin pair, using adjusted national birth data to give control distributions of these variables. Risk of leukaemia was increased in first-born twins, risk of testicular cancer was increased in second-born twins with female co-twins but decreased in second-born twin

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and gestational diabetes mellitus by birth order: A descriptive study across lifetime reproductive history.

INTRODUCTION: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and gestational diabetes mellitus are known to be strongly related, and underlying maternal cardiometabolic dysfunction has been proposed as a mechanism for both complications. A comparison of the trends by birth order for the two complications may reveal insights into their shared or different causes. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We used data from the Medical Birth Registry of Norway from 1999 to 2020 with an aim to compare risk by birth order for hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and gestational diabetes mellitus. Visualizations of cross-sectiona

ACETAMINOPHEN ADMINISTERING IN ORDER TO OBLITERATE HEMODYNAMICALLY SIGNIFICANT PATENT DUCTUS ARTERIOSUS IN NEONATES WITH EXTREMELY LOW BIRTH WEIGHT.

BACKGROUND: Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is one of the most common pathological conditions within the neonatal period Functioning of hemodynamically significant patent ductus arteriosus can cause a development ofvarious complications. This is why the earliest possible drug therapy or surgery is required in order to eliminate this fetal communication. THE AIM: to study the efficacy and safety of acetaminophen administering to infants with low birth weight for medical obliteration of hemodynamically significant ductus arteriosus. RHD maternal-fetal genotype incompatibility and schizophrenia: extending the MFG test to include multiple siblings and birth order.

Rh incompatibility disease (ie Rh hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn) has been implicated as a risk factor for schizophrenia. Here, we extend the maternal-fetal genotype incompatibility (MFG) test used in an earlier case-parent trio study that found significant evidence for an increased risk of schizophrenia in RHD MFG-incompatible children. We modify the MFG test for case-parent trios to include any number of siblings. This modified test enables us to use more of the available data from the earlier study. The increased sample size not only gives us greater power to test for MFG incomp
