Strong positive allometry of bite force in leaf-cutter ants increases the range of cuttable plant tissues.

OBJECTIVE: Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) is a reactive hypermelanosis of various skin types, which occurs as a sequela of cutaneous inflammation or injury. Despite generally a self-limited and temporary condition, PIH is still a frustrating problem that can have significant psychosocial effects on patients, especially those with darker skin types. Laser therapy is one of the effective treatments for PIH, and various wavelength lasers and light devices have been utilized in PIH therapy. Nonetheless, data on the long-term efficacy of the 755-nm alexandrite picosecond laser are limite

Characteristics of the human and pet populations in animal bite incidents recorded at two Air Force bases.

Animal bites reported at Scott Air Force Base, Ill., and Whiteman Air Force Base, Mo., were investigated to determine the incidence of reported bites and possible causes. Data were collected by abstracting information contained in animal bite files maintained by the Base veterinary Office. A total of 696 bite incidents were reported for the 24 months from January 1976 through December 1977. An overall incidence rate of 1,390 bites per 100,000 persons was calculated from these statistics. This rate is far greater than the previous estimates of 800 animal bites per 100,000 for an urban populatio

Can experimentally evoked pain in the jaw muscles or temporomandibular joint affect anterior bite force in humans?

AIMS: To test the hypothesis that experimental pain in the masseter muscle or temporomandibular joint (TMJ) will decrease the anterior maximum voluntary bite force (MVBF) and jaw muscle activity in relation to the perceived effort. METHODS: Sixteen volunteers participated in two experimental sessions. Participants were injected with 0.2 mL of monosodium glutamate (1.0 M) into either the masseter muscle or TMJ. The MVBF and corresponding electromyographic (EMG) activity of the masseter, anterior temporalis, and digastric muscles were recorded 10 times at an interval of 2 minutes before and aft

Insights into the ecology and evolutionary success of crocodilians revealed through bite-force and tooth-pressure experimentation.

BACKGROUND: Crocodilians have dominated predatory niches at the water-land interface for over 85 million years. Like their ancestors, living species show substantial variation in their jaw proportions, dental form and body size. These differences are often assumed to reflect anatomical specialization related to feeding and niche occupation, but quantified data are scant. How these factors relate to biomechanical performance during feeding and their relevance to crocodilian evolutionary success are not known. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We measured adult bite forces and tooth pressures in

Effect of axial Bruxism bite force on titanium alloys biomaterials experimental chewing test and 3D finite element simulation.

This study aims to analyze the wear behavior of cp-Ti and Ti-alloys, which are frequently preferred as dental materials in the human body, under different Bruxism wear processes by experimental in vitro chewing cycle and finite element analysis(FEA) simulation method. The results obtained within the scope of this study showed that the Bruxism wear resistance increased by adding zirconium and tantalum to pure titanium material. However, in the FEA simulation, it was observed that the maximum stress area was evident in the implant structure at 75° bite force chewing process.

The Maximum Bite Force for Treatment Evaluation in Severely Affected Adult SMA Patients-Protocol for a Longitudinal Study.

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a severe neuromuscular disorder characterized by the degeneration of motor neurons in the spinal cord, and comprises a broad clinical spectrum. With the advent of new therapies (e.g., Nusinersen) for patients of all ages and disease stages, sensitive clinical measures are needed to detect slight changes in muscle force even in immobilized, severely affected patients often unable to move limbs. As for these patients, well-established outcome scales set out to evaluate motor function do not work properly, we propose measurement of maximum bite force which is able

[Effect of bite force on the periodontal tissue remodeling of molar with different levels of periodontal attachment ment].

OBJECTIVE: The theory of strain energy density (SED) was combined with finite element analysis to investigate alveolar bone remodeling of the mandibular first molar with different levels of periodontal attachment under mastication loading. METHODS: Three-dimensional finite element models of the mandibular first molar with different levels of periodontal attachment were established. Based on SED theory, the user material subroutine (UMAT) (used by ABAQUS software) was developed by ourselves to simulate the remodeling process of mandibular bone. The stress distributions and bone density changes

Effect of experimental jaw muscle pain on EMG activity and bite force distribution at different level of clenching.

Bite force at different levels of clenching and the corresponding electromyographic (EMG) activity in jaw-closing muscles were recorded in 16 healthy women before, during and after painful stimulation of the left masseter muscle. Experimental pain was induced by infusion of 5·8% hypertonic saline (HS), and 0·9% isotonic saline (IS) was infused as a control. EMG activity was recorded bilaterally from the masseter and temporalis muscles, and static bite force was assessed by pressure-sensitive films (Dental Pre-scale) at 5, 50 and 100% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) during each session.

Tooth eruption status and bite force determine dental microwear texture gradients in albino rats (Rattus norvegicus forma domestica).

Dental microwear texture analysis (DMTA) is widely applied for inferring diet in vertebrates. Besides diet and ingesta properties, factors like wear stage and bite force may affect microwear formation, potentially leading to tooth position-specific microwear patterns. We investigated DMTA consistency along the upper cheek tooth row in young adult female rats at different growth stages, but with erupted adult dentitions. Bite forces for each molar (M) position were determined using muscle cross-sectional areas and lever arm mechanics. Rats were categorized into three size classes based on incre

Comparative evaluation of bite force in patients treated for unilateral mandibular condylar fractures by open and closed methods.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Condylar fractures account for a large proportion (20% to 52%) of mandibular injuries. The goal of treating these fractures is to restore the occlusion, thereby re-establishing the masticatory function as close as possible to the patient's pre-trauma state. The aim of this study was to compare the bite forces following unilateral condylar fractures treated by open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) with those managed by the closed method. METHOD: Patients with unilateral mandibular condylar fractures were divided into two groups (n = 20) using a simple randomization method

Effects of short-term acupuncture treatment on occlusal force and mandibular movement in patients with deep-bite malocclusion.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Acupuncture is well known to be effective for pain relief and muscle relaxation, and hence it is feasible that acupuncture treatment could change the occlusal forces and mandibular movements in subjects with deep-bite malocclusion. The purpose of this research was to determine the distribution of occlusal force and the border movement of the mandible in patients with deep-bite malocclusion before and after acupuncture treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study involved 17 volunteers with deep-bite malocclusion and aged 20-30 years. Before and after acupuncture treatment,
