Exposure of the freshwater bivalve Hyridella australis to metal contaminated sediments in the field and laboratory microcosms: metal uptake and effects.

Metal uptake and induced toxic effects on Hyridella australis were investigated by establishing 28 day exposure-dose-response relationships (EDR) of transplanted H. australis at four sites along a sediment metal contamination gradient in the mine affected Molonglo River, NSW. Laboratory exposure of this organism to the same sediments, collected from in situ sites, was run concurrently. Metal concentrations in whole organisms, individual tissues and sub-cellular tissue fractions were measured as organism metal dose. Total antioxidant capacity (TAOC), lipid peroxidation (MDA) and lysosomal membr

Microbial Diseases of Bivalve Mollusks: Infections, Immunology and Antimicrobial Defense.

A variety of bivalve mollusks (phylum Mollusca, class Bivalvia) constitute a prominent commodity in fisheries and aquacultures, but are also crucial in order to preserve our ecosystem's complexity and function. Bivalve mollusks, such as clams, mussels, oysters and scallops, are relevant bred species, and their global farming maintains a high incremental annual growth rate, representing a considerable proportion of the overall fishery activities. Bivalve mollusks are filter feeders; therefore by filtering a great quantity of water, they may bioaccumulate in their tissues a high number of microo

Buried Alive: The Behavioural Response of the Mussels, Modiolus modiolus and Mytilus edulis to Sudden Burial by Sediment.

Sedimentation in the sea occurs through natural processes, such as wave and tidal action, which can be exacerbated during storms and floods. Changes in terrestrial land use, marine aggregate extraction, dredging, drilling and mining are known to result in substantial sediment deposition. Research suggests that deposition will also occur due to the modern development of marine renewable energy. The response to individual burial under three depths of sediment, three sediment fractions and five burial durations was investigated in two mussel species, Modiolus modiolus and Mytilus edulis in specia

Acute and chronic toxicity of technical-grade pesticides to glochidia and juveniles of freshwater mussels (Unionidae).

Chemical contaminants are among many potential factors involved in the decline of freshwater mussel populations in North America, and the effects of pesticides on early life stages of unionid mussels are largely unknown. The objective of this study was to determine the toxicity of technical-grade current-use pesticides to glochidia and juvenile life stages of freshwater mussels. We performed acute toxicity tests with glochidia (five species) and juveniles (two species) exposed to a suite of current-use pesticides including herbicides (atrazine and pendimethalin), insecticides (fipronil and per

Acute and chronic toxicity of pesticide formulations (atrazine, chlorpyrifos, and permethrin) to glochidia and juveniles of Lampsilis siliquoidea.

Freshwater mussels are among the most imperiled faunal groups in North America; approximately 67% of the nearly 300 native freshwater mussel species (family Unionidae) are listed as endangered, threatened, or of special concern. Despite evidence that glochidia and juvenile life stages are highly sensitive to some chemical contaminants, the effects of pesticides on early life stages of unionid mussels are largely unknown. In the United States, pesticide registration is based on toxicity data of the active ingredient, not formulations as they are sold and applied. Some pesticide formulations, ho

Global patterns and knowledge gaps in rare earth element bioaccumulation in wildlife: A systematic review.

Rare earth elements (REEs) are increasingly recognized as emerging environmental contaminants due to their expanding use in electronics, renewable energy, medical devices, and fertilizers. This systematic review synthesizes current knowledge on REE concentrations in free-ranging wildlife from aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. We analyzed 95 peer-reviewed studies (1976-2025) selected from Scopus and Web of Science using PRISMA 2020 guidelines, evaluating geographic distribution, taxonomic coverage, trophic level, tissue type, analytical methods, and data reporting. The number of publications

Bacterial Cytochrome C Orchestrates Larval Metamorphosis Through Bioelectrical Control of Extracellular Vesicles Biogenesis.

Beyond the well-established roles in biomedical processes, extracellular vesicles (EVs) from Gram-negative bacteria are now identified as potent inducers of larval metamorphosis in marine invertebrates, a critical process for sustaining the health and function of global marine ecosystems. However, the specific inductive molecules within EVs remain largely unknown. Our findings reveal that cytochrome c (CytC), a previously unrecognized chemical signal packaged within EVs, induces larval metamorphosis. CytC maturation is essential for this process, as it enhances the efficiency of electron trans

Genomic and Functional Diversity of Pseudoalteromonas Associated with the Tropical Bivalve Anadara tuberculosa.

Members of the genus Pseudoalteromonas are ecologically versatile marine bacteria involved in nutrient cycling, chemical signaling, and competition for resources via bioactive compound production. Here, we characterize the genomic and functional diversity of 19 Pseudoalteromonas isolates from the bivalve Anadara tuberculosa to elucidate ecological strategies enabling coexistence in host-associated environments. Whole-genome sequencing and phylogenomic inference revealed extensive genomic diversity, with most isolates affiliated with recognized taxa and two genomically distinct lineages represe

Biomedical Potential of the Deep-Sea Vent Mussel Bathymodiolus azoricus: Integrating Immunity, Bioadhesion, Biomineralization, and Targeted Transcriptomic Reanalysis.

The deep sea harbors a substantial proportion of the ocean's unexplored biological and chemical diversity, while hydrothermal vent ecosystems expose resident organisms to unusual combinations of hydrostatic pressure, steep chemical gradients, reduced compounds, and elevated metal concentrations. This Review examines the deep-sea vent mussel Bathymodiolus azoricus, a dominant species at Mid-Atlantic Ridge hydrothermal fields, as a source of biological mechanisms and molecular systems with potential biomedical relevance. We integrate three areas that have largely developed separately in the lite

Metabolomics identifies tissue-specific trends in butter clams (Saxidomus gigantea) across a subarctic fjord-type estuarine system.

Across the Circumpolar North, harvesting of marine shellfish resources is vital for continued subsistence, recreational, and commercial lifestyles. However, estuarine and intertidal systems of Southcentral Alaska experience landscape-scale challenges due to variable physical characteristics, freshwater discharge, water quality, food availability, and nutritional quality. Additionally, findings in more temperate environments may not be entirely applicable to the subarctic. The continued sustainability of this resource depends largely on our ability to understand and adapt to environmental chall

Unprecedentedly tough, strong, water-resistant, and multifunctional lignin-based resin adhesives inspired by loose connective tissue, plant cell walls, and mussel foot proteins.

Utilizing lignin as a complete substitute for petroleum-derived phenol to synthesize non-toxic lignin-based resin adhesives with bio-based aldehydes holds substantial significance for advancing sustainable development in the wood-based panel industry. Nevertheless, the poor bonding strength, toughness, and water resistance of phenol-free lignin-based resins hinder their practical application. Herein, inspired by the hyperbranched structures of loose connective tissue, borate chemistry of plant cell walls, and Fe3+-phenol coordination bonds of mussel foot proteins, a tough, strong, water-resist

Does glochidia infestation of the freshwater pearl mussel (Margaritifera margaritifera) affect foraging behavior and growth in brown trout (Salmo trutta)?

Fish serve as hosts to a wide range of parasites, which can affect them in many ways, including their survival, growth, and foraging behavior. The highly threatened unionid mussels have an ectoparasitic life stage on the gills, skin, or fins of fish. Here, we compared prey handling time and growth between groups of brown trout (Salmo trutta) that were infested and non-infested with glochidia larvae of the freshwater pearl mussel (Margaritifera margaritifera). In a prey handling test, individual trout were presented with one large prey (maggot) and one small prey (Gammarus pulex) daily over eig

Short-term effects of acrylamide exposure towards fatty acids' composition and histological features of the rayed trough-shell Mactra stultorum' branchial tissues.

Acrylamide (ACR) is a broad-spectrum water-soluble monomer used in polymer production. Through assorted pathways, such as wastewater offload, industrial effluents, and leaching from polyacrylamide grouting materials, ACR can reach aquatic environments and readily influence common organisms in coastal areas near urban or industrial zones, notably edible clams. The current study evaluated the ACR impact on the fatty acids (FA) composition in the rayed trough-shell Mactra stultorum gills. Bivalves were exposed to ACR-graded concentrations (5,10, and 20 mg/L) for 5 days. At the end of the trial, t

Investigating Non-Native Ribbon Worm Cephalothrix simula as a Potential Source of Tetrodotoxin in British Bivalve Shellfish.

Tetrodotoxin (TTX) is a potent marine neurotoxin found in several phylogenetically diverse organisms, some of which are sought as seafood. Since 2015, TTX has been reported in bivalve shellfish from several estuarine locations along the Mediterranean and European Atlantic coasts, posing an emerging food safety concern. Although reports on spatial and temporal distribution have increased in recent years, processes leading to TTX accumulation in European bivalves are yet to be described. Here, we explored the hypothesis that the ribbon worm species Cephalothrix simula, known to contain high leve

Histopathologic survey of free-living populations of 2 species of freshwater mussels in Indiana.

Freshwater mussels are one of the most endangered groups of animals in Indiana, with nearly half of the native species either extirpated or listed as "state endangered" or of "special concern." Nationally, numerous freshwater mussel species are considered threatened. Freshwater mussel diseases are not well understood and few published accounts of freshwater mussel diseases with detailed histological descriptions exist. Mass mortality events within mussel populations are increasingly recognized, often with undetermined etiology. Our objective was to determine baseline histopathology in free-liv

Development and application of an in-house library and workflow for gas chromatography-electron ionization-accurate-mass/high-resolution mass spectrometry screening of environmental samples.

This work presents an optimized gas chromatography-electron ionization-high-resolution mass spectrometry (GC-EI-HRMS) screening method. Different method parameters affecting data processing with the Agilent Unknowns Analysis SureMass deconvolution software were optimized in order to achieve the best compromise between false positives and false negatives. To this end, an accurate-mass library of 26 model compounds was created. Then, five replicates of mussel extracts were spiked with a mixture of these 26 compounds at two concentration levels (10 and 100 ng/g dry weight in mussel, 50 and 500 ng

Real-time automated behavioural monitoring of mussels during contaminant exposures using an improved microcontroller-based device.

An improved microcontroller-based device for real-time biomonitoring of mussel behaviour is introduced in this study. Open source Arduino platforms were used as processing cores and infra-red (IR) sensors (with transistor output) and Hall sensors to record the cardiac activities and valve movements of mussels. Compared to the devices described in previous studies, this device has low cost, high throughput, and high portability, and can be applied to conduct real-time preliminary automatic data processing. Mediterranean mussels were exposed to Cu2+ and microplastics and their cardiac activities

Zwitterionic modified electrostatic flocking surfaces for diatoms and mussels resistance.

Environmentally friendly antifouling coatings without biocide release need to be developed. Herein, a vertical array of nylon fibers coated with poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) (PSBMA) was prepared by the electrostatic flocking technique and free radical polymerization catalyzed by Fe2+, which are called zwitterionic electrostatic flocking surfaces (ZEFS). The ZEFS showed resistance to diatoms because the fiber diameter was smaller than the diatom size. At the same time, the ZEFS prevented mussels adhesion. The number of plaques on the ZEFS was reduced by more than 98% and 96% compared with th
