In-office vs at-home tooth bleaching: A narrative review of efficacy and safety.

To compare in-office (chairside) and at-home (dentist-supervised) vital tooth bleaching techniques in terms of efficacy, longevity, safety, sensitivity, and patient-reported outcomes. A narrative review of the literature was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane Library, including randomized trials, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses published between 2000 and 2025. Studies directly comparing in-office and at-home bleaching with peroxide-based agents were selected. Outcomes of interest included immediate color change, relapse over time, incidence and intensity of tooth sensitivity, a

Topical application of bleaching phenols; in-vivo studies and mechanism of action relevant to melanoma treatment.

Skin depigmentation represents a well-established treatment for extensive vitiligo and may likewise be suited to prevent tumor recurrences and as a prophylactic treatment of familial melanoma, as common bleaching agents are cytotoxic to melanocytes. Effective melanoma prevention requires a bleaching agent-induced loss of exposed melanocytes supported by an immune response to distant pigment cells. Studies on human explant cultures treated with depigmenting agents such as 4-tertiary butyl phenol (4-TBP) or monobenzyl ether of hydroquinone (MBEH) showed a significant increase in the migration of

Scanning electron microscopy study of dental enamel surface exposed to 35% hydrogen peroxide: alone, with saliva, and with 10% carbamide peroxide.

Several vital bleaching systems have been introduced in response to the demand in esthetic dentistry. The active agents are commonly hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide used in at-home or in-office techniques. Although generally positive results have been reported concerning the whitening ability of these agents, concerns still remain as to their effects on dental tissues. The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the effect of these bleaching agents on the enamel surface morphology. Twelve extracted teeth were used according to three experimental protocols. In experimental protoco

Occupational eczema and asthma in a hairdresser caused by hair-bleaching products.

Occupational allergic contact eczema and asthma caused by bleaching agents is seen in hairdressers. Bleaching agents contain persulfate salts, which are known to induce immediate reactions such as rhinitis, asthma, contact urticaria, and anaphylaxis. The immunologic mechanism is not, however, fully understood. The specific inhalation challenge test is considered to be the gold standard for diagnosing occupational asthma and rhinitis. However, this test is not always accessible. Therefore, the diagnosis of occupational allergic asthma caused by persulfate salts is made by combining a clinical h

Comparative assessment of bleaching of natural teeth using ozone-enhanced low-concentration hydrogen peroxide.

PURPOSE: To compare the efficacy of using a low concentration of hydrogen peroxide (HP) followed by ozone (7%-15% HP and ozone) and using a high concentration of HP (35% HP) in bleaching of natural teeth. In addition, the bleaching efficacy of ozone alone was evaluated in comparison to 7%-35% HP and ozone. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This randomized controlled in vitro study was carried out on 75 extracted human teeth with intact enamel. The teeth were randomly allocated to 5 groups (15 teeth per group) and were then bleached with either ozone alone, 35% HP and ozone, 15% HP and ozone, 10% HP and

Liquid household bleach ingestion in children: a retrospective review.

Current literature and some standard reference textbooks fail to adequately delineate the management of liquid household bleach (sodium hypochlorite) as different from other caustic agents. A literature review and retrospective study were conducted to focus attention on the clinical course and the low potential for development of long-term sequelae secondary to liquid household bleach ingestion in children. The records of 19 patients were reviewed. The mean age of children ingesting bleach was 24 months. Most children obtained the liquid from an open container such as a cup. There were no shor

Intracanal isolating barriers as they relate to bleaching.

Four restorative materials were evaluated for effectiveness as intracanal isolating barriers to prevent leakage of bleaching agents into the coronal part of the root canal. Fifty-five teeth were stained in vitro, instrumented, and filled with gutta-percha. In the experimental groups, gutta-percha was removed 2 mm apical to the labial cementoenamel junction, and an intracanal isolating barrier (zinc oxide-eugenol, IRM, Ketac-Cem, or Scotchbond Multipurpose) was placed even with the facial and proximal cementoenamel junction areas in a sloped manner. All were bleached with a thermocatalytic and

Skin lightening: causes and complications.

Skin bleaching, also known as skin lightening, is the deliberate lightening of an individual's skin tone without medical supervision. The causes are complex, multifactorial and often intertwined, although the unifying themes centre around a belief that lighter skin denotes an individual of higher status, socioeconomic background or physical beauty, than their darker-skinned counterpart. Skin lightening is achieved using agents that block the production of melanin and often contain drugs such as hydroquinone, superpotent topical steroids or mercury. These drugs can cause serious local and syste

More than 90% immediate success has been reported for intracoronal bleaching of non-vital teeth, and in the period of 1-8 years' observation time, from 10 to 40% of the initially successfully treated teeth needed re-treatment. Cervical root resorption is a possible consequence of internal bleaching and is more frequently observed in teeth treated with the thermo-catalytic procedure. When the external too

Degradation of EDTA and DTPA in chlorine dioxide bleaching conditions.

The decomposition of EDTA and DTPA was studied in simulated chlorine dioxide bleaching conditions. Under the investigated conditions EDTA and DTPA decomposed readily. Accordingly, feeding the chelating agents to the first chlorine dioxide stages (D0) should be reconsidered, when successful metal removal is desired. On the other hand, chlorine dioxide water may be utilized to degrade the chelating agents.

Hydrogen peroxide: a review of its use in dentistry.

Several dentifrices that contain hydrogen peroxide are currently being marketed. The increased use of bleaching agents containing (or generating) H2O2 prompted this review of the safety of H2O2 when used in oral hygiene. Daily exposure to the low levels of H2O2 present in dentifrices is much lower than that of bleaching agents that contain or produce high levels of H2O2 for an extended period of time. Hydrogen peroxide has been used in dentistry alone or in combination with salts for over 70 years. Studies in which 3% H2O2 or less were used daily for up to 6 years showed occasional transitory

Isolation and characterization of cellulose nanocrystals from reticulated fibers covering the stem of milk thistle (Silybum marianum L.).

This study investigates the valorization of the reticulated fibrous sheath covering the stems of Silybum marianum (milk thistle) as a novel lignocellulosic source for the production of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs). A modified Kruscher-Hoffer pretreatment, followed by alkaline extraction and multi-step bleaching, was applied to isolate purified cellulose with a yield of 49.0%. Subsequent sulfuric acid hydrolysis was performed to obtain two distinct products: D2 (single-step bleaching) and D3 (two-step bleaching). CNC production through the D2 process achieved a total yield of 26.46% based on t

Detection of hydroquinone by Raman spectroscopy in patients with melasma before and after treatment.

BACKGROUND: Melasma is an acquired, facial hyperpigmentation without a specific origin. It is regularly associated with multiple etiologic factors such as pregnancy, genetic, racial, and from estrogen administration. Among the methods to treat skin hyperpigmentation a series of skin bleaching agents have been used. At present, the most commonly used agent is known as hydroquinone. Nowadays, it is known that hydroquinone can cause cancer in animals with unknown relevance to humans. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this work, Raman spectroscopy was used to observe the presence of hydroquinone in the sk

Distinguishing discolored caries lesions using biofluorescence and dental bleaching: An in vitro simulation model study.

BACKGROUND: Distinguishing between discoloration caused by caries and organic stains is challenging for dentists in clinical settings. Biofluorescence (BF)-bleaching assesses caries lesions by evaluating BF changes after removing organic stains through dental bleaching, leaving cariogenic discoloration. This study aimed to apply BF-bleaching to a simulation model mimicking cariogenic discoloration and compare the BF color changes between organic staining and cariogenic discoloration. METHODS: Thirty artificial caries lesions in bovine incisors were equally divided into three groups: non-stain
