Four dogs with recurrent acanthomatous epulis (AE) were injected with bleomycin (5 mg) intralesionally once a week. In three cases, tumors were clinically indistinguishable within three-to-eight weeks. In the fourth case, the tumor disappeared after 10 weekly injections. Through the administration period of bleomycin, no adverse reactions were recognized in any case. Electron microscopic examination together with a decrease in the percentage of mitotic cells implied that bleomycin might inhibit deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) synthesis of tumor cells.

Three models were used to examine the requirement of bleomycin (Blm) for iron (Fe) to carry out its antitumor or cytotoxic activity. Mice were made iron deficient by dietary means. Animals with depressed iron stores in liver and low plasma and ascites fluid iron supported Ehrlich tumor growth as well as mice maintained on a control diet. Blood lymphocytes from 3 Down's syndrome (DS) and 3 age- and sex-matched normal probands were studied for the induction of chromosomal aberrations and sister-chromatid exchange (SCEs). A sensitive new method to assay bleomycin (BLM) metabolism was developed using an ion-paired, reverse-phase high-pressure liquid chromatography technique in conjunction with fluorescence detection that allowed levels of BLM less than 20 ng/ml to be detected. A trial of the action of bleomycin was made on 237 cancer patients with tumours in a visible and actively growing phase who did not require surgery or radiotherapy. Systemic bleomycin therapy is associated with pulmonary fibrosis and cutaneous side effects. While it is believed that there is little to no systemic distribution of bleomycin when utilized to treat vascular malformations (VMs), we present a case series in which cutaneous, adhesive-related hyperpigmentation suggests that there is systemic egress of bleomycin following direct puncture sclerotherapy (DPS). This risk of hyperpigmentation after intralesional bleomycin should be discussed with patients, and steps to minimize the chances of it occurring should be implemented.

Whether C5 blocking may improve the outcomes of patients developing chemotherapy-induced thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) remains elusive. We describe our experience with BEP (bleomycin, etoposide, cisplatin) therapy as chemotherapy for testicular tumors in 11 patients. Eight were non-seminomatous testicular cancer patients and 3 were seminoma patients. BACKGROUND: Cystic hygromas are congenital macrocystic lymphatic malformations. Most cystic hygromas present at birth, during infancy or early childhood. Sclerotherapy is the main treatment, and Bleomycin is the most frequently used sclerosing agent.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate if intralesional Bleomycin (BLM) injection is a safe and effective treatment of cystic hygromas in pediatric patients.
