[Dissident sexualities: an outlook on identity narratives and lifestyle in cyberspace].

The subculture of BDSM (Bondage, Discipline, Domination, Submission, Sadism, Masochism) is organized around dissident erotic practices based on consent. Starting with a netnography survey, this study seeks to understand how adepts of BDSM present themselves from the standpoint of identity in cyberspace. In this sense, blogs and sites related to BDSM, as well as social networks, have been observed. Added to this material are interviews of adepts in other media. Techniques of Saturation Sampling and Discourse Analysis were applied. By eroticizing power, they construct erotic games based on hiera

Patient-reported outcomes and therapeutic affordances of social media: findings from a global online survey of people with chronic pain.

BACKGROUND: Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) from social media use in chronic disease management continue to emerge. While many published articles suggest the potential for social media is positive, there is a lack of robust examination into mediating mechanisms that might help explain social media's therapeutic value. This study presents findings from a global online survey of people with chronic pain (PWCP) to better understand how they use social media as part of self-management. OBJECTIVE: Our aim is to improve understanding of the various health outcomes reported by PWCP by paying close

The Coalition Against Typhoid: Mobilizing a Community for a Global Fight.

Typhoid became a low priority on the global public health agenda when it was largely eliminated from developed countries in the 1940s. However, communities in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa continue to bear the brunt of the disease burden. One strategy to increase attention and coordinate action is the creation of a coalition to act as a steward for typhoid. The Coalition against Typhoid (CaT) was created in 2010 with the mission of preventing typhoid among vulnerable populations through research, education, and advocacy. CaT successfully raised the profile of typhoid through convening the

Psychological effects of bed bug attacks (Cimex lectularius L.).

BACKGROUND: In some individuals, psychological sequelae resulting from bed bug biting events include nightmares, flashbacks, hypervigilance (to keep the bugs away), insomnia, anxiety, avoidance behaviors, and personal dysfunction. These symptoms are suggestive of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). METHODS: We used a previously published PTSD checklist to analyze online blogs and other Internet sites where bed bug postings occur to assess postings for evidence of emotional trauma. RESULTS: One hundred thirty-five postings were read and analyzed, and 110 (81%) of those postings reported psy

[Friends of virtual Ana--the phenomenon of pro-anorexia in the Internet].

Anorexia nervosa is regarded as a serious mental disturbance, where denial of illness and strong resistance to treatment are symptomatic features. In many cases it leads to extreme devastation or even to death. Effective treatment of this disorder still remains a challenge for clinicians and researchers. Since the 90-ies of the previous century there has been a rise in the free access to the internet. At present over a billion people all over the world use it. What young people look for in the internet is not only information, but also friends, support or entertainment. For last a few years, a

Being Human Under Inhuman Conditions: Meanings of Living with Severe Dissociative States Involving the Experience of Being in Parts.

Severe dissociative states involving the experience of being in parts, typically associated with diagnosis such as dissociative identity disorder and other specified dissociative disorders, continue to be a controversial and rarely studied area of research. However, because persons with severe dissociative states are at risk of being harmed instead of helped within psychiatric care, their experiences of living with such states warrant further examination, while innovative ways to include them in research remain necessary. Against that background, this study aimed to illuminate the meanings of

Behind the Hashtag: Online Disclosure of Mental Illness and Community Response on Tumblr.

The present study examined personal disclosures about mental illness and the responses of online community members on the social media platform, Tumblr. We sampled public blog posts of 14,626 Tumblr users disclosing ten different mental health diagnoses using hashtags (e.g., #depression, #anxiety, and #anorexia). We examined the content of users' disclosures, predictors of disclosure frequency, and predictors of online community response. The content of most disclosures was related to users' emotions and cognitions about their mental health and their feelings of interpersonal loss and change o

Getting It Out There: Reflections on the Process and Impact of Public Engagement Activities in a Study on End-of-Life Care Planning With People With Intellectual Disabilities.

INTRODUCTION: Many tools and interventions developed from research projects are not properly implemented in health and social care practice. Engaging with stakeholders is an important part of the implementation process when developing, sharing and embedding new tools. The Victoria & Stuart Project was a 2-year project that co-designed a toolkit of resources and approaches to support end-of-life care planning for people with intellectual disabilities. It had an inclusively delivered dissemination and engagement workstream to raise awareness of the toolkit throughout the project. In this paper,

Accelerating diagnosis of degenerative cervical myelopathy through improved education: a mixed-methods study protocol from Myelopathy.org RECODE-DCM to define stakeholders, knowledge requirements and an optimal intervention strategy.

INTRODUCTION: Outcomes for degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM) patients are limited by delayed and missed diagnoses, driven in part by poor professional awareness. Despite DCM being the most common cause of adult spinal cord injury, it remains under-recognised and undertaught in clinical education. Lessons from other common pathology like stroke and acute myocardial infarction highlight the potential of education to improve early diagnosis. This study will develop a professional education strategy to improve early DCM diagnosis. It will define key audiences and identify an effective deliver

Drawing the Line between Sick and Healthy: Normality Constructions in Health Communication Contexts.

In this paper we examine how traditional views of normality are negotiated, indorsed and resisted when talking about children with heart defects. Having as a starting point an ethnographic project that aimed to study knowledge construction when being pregnant or having a child with a heart defect, we focus on argumentation put forward by clinicians and parents in order to understand the forms that normality takes in relation to children's health and illness and the way that it is constructed argumentatively and linguistically. More specifically, we draw data from recorded doctor-patient consul

Complementary feeding: new styles versus old myths.

Early life feeding habits may potentially alter future metabolic programming and body composition. Complementary feeding is the period of time when infants introduce food different from milk in their diet, together with a gradual reduction of the intake of milk (either breast milk or formula), to finally acquire the diet model of their family. This period is important in the transition of the infant from milk feeding to family foods, and is necessary for both nutritional and developmental reasons. The timing for introducing complementary foods and the method of feeding have changed over time.

The Effects of Tobacco Coverage in the Public Communication Environment on Young People's Decisions to Smoke Combustible Cigarettes.

In today's complex media environment, does media coverage influence youth and young adults' (YYA) tobacco use and intentions? We conceptualize the "public communication environment" and effect mediators, then ask whether over time variation in exogenously measured tobacco media coverage from mass and social media sources predicts daily YYA cigarette smoking intentions measured in a rolling nationally representative phone survey (N = 11,847 on 1,147 days between May 2014 and June 2017). Healthy barbs: activism confronts mortality.

Barbara Brenner, JD, was the Executive Director of Breast Cancer Action (BCA) from 1995-2010. Before that, she was a longtime activist in the anti-war movement and an attorney who, for most of her career, practiced public policy law. After she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1993 at the age of 41, she took the helm of BCA. Under her leadership, the organization moved into a position of national advocacy-demanding research on the causes and prevention of breast cancer, including the role of industrial pollutants. Barbara started the "Think Before You Pink" campaign, encouraging people to qu

"The challenge of managing insecurities": Parents' experiences with the care for their child with congenital diaphragmatic hernia.

PURPOSE: Last decennia remarkable advances have been made in decreasing the mortality rate of children with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH), resulting in a relatively growing patient group with long-term complications and complex care needs. These consequences have a huge impact on the quality of life of both children and their families. To provide practical recommendations for improving the quality of care for this patient group, the present study sought to obtain insights into the experiences and needs of parents with a child with CDH. DESIGN AND METHODS: A qualitative study was condu

Exploring fertility treatment add-on use, information transparency and costs in the UK: Insights from a patient survey.

This study presents the findings from a UK-based survey exploring fertility treatment add-ons, treatment costs, and information transparency. The online survey, distributed via social media, targeted current and prospective IVF patients, yielding 304 eligible responses. Results indicate an increase in the use of fertility treatment add-ons compared to previous data. Respondents primarily relied on multiple sources for information about these add-ons, with search engines being the most frequently used, followed by fertility clinic websites, the HFEA website, and medical or scientific articles.

Aggressive Radiation-Induced Cavernous Sinus Meningioma: 2-Dimensional Operative Video.

Radiation-induced meningiomas are the most common radiation-induced neoplasms. They exhibit a distinct aggressive clinical behavior as rapid growth, recurrences, multiplicity, and malignant progression are common features.1-4 Atypical histological findings and aberrant cytogenetics are increasingly identified.5-7 Radical resection of aggressive radiation-induced meningiomas is the best treatment option and would offer the best chance for control of the disease. Wide bone and dural margins should be pursued in the resection. Parasellar extension creates significant surgical challenges. Cavernou
