International private umbilical cord blood banking has expanded rapidly in recent years since the first cord blood transplant which was 20 years ago. Private companies offer parents the opportunity to store umbilical cord blood for the possible future use by their child or other family members. The private cord blood industry has been criticised by a number of professional bodies including the EU Ethics Committee, the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, the Royal College of Midwives and the US College of Paediatrics. This review presents the arguments from the opponents of private cor

Storage of red cells for three weeks at 4 C under blood bank conditions resulted in a rise in intracellular Na+ and a fall in intracellular K+ with concomitant opposite changes in Na+ and K+ levels in the suspending plasma. A decline in red blood cell ATP during the storage period did not appear to be contributing to the changes. Increasing red blood cell ATP to levels 2 to 3 times normal did not prevent the cation changes from occurring. When assayed at 37 C in the presence of added Mg++, ouabain-sensitive membrane ATPase activity and kinetics of activation by Na+ were unaffected by the three

Background Viral transfusion-transmissible infections (TTIs), hepatitis B (HBV), hepatitis C (HCV), and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) pose a major risk to blood safety in India, where most blood banks rely on serology alone for TTI screening. Our blood bank at Max Healthcare, New Delhi, India, has used nucleic acid testing (NAT) alongside serology for TTI screening since 2010. Objectives The aim of this study was to evaluate 15 years of real-world blood bank data to evaluate the impact of NAT alongside serology in improving TTI detection and transfusion safety. Methods This single-centre

INTRODUCTION: To determine seroprevalence for Brucella sp. in blood donors, a serologic study was carried out at three blood banks of the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS).
METHODS: 500 blood samples were taken from selected blood donors. Laboratory tests were used, such as Bengal rose (BR), Standard agglutination in microplate (SAM) and in presence of 2-Mercaptoethanol agglutination in microplate (2ME), which were applied to 500 blood sera from selected effective blood donors. The sample was representative according to the statistical analysis developed.
RESULTS: 18 of 500 analyze

BACKGROUND: The American Association of Blood Banks annually surveys institutional members on activities pertinent to blood collections, apheresis, and transfusions.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Retrospective descriptive statistics and comparative statistical analyses including trend tests were performed on selected topics from the 1989, 1990, and 1991 Institutional Questionnaires. The data were compiled by institution type, namely, regional and community blood donor collection centers and hospital-based facilities. Evaluated topics included the apheresis and therapeutic procedures performed, tr

INTRODUCTION: Trauma, obstetric haemorrhage and severe anaemia lead to millions of deaths every year. Many of these deaths occur in regions known as 'blood deserts' where there is virtually no access to blood transfusions. A community or civilian walking blood bank (CWBB) is a low-resource strategy that can provide just-in-time, point-of-care tested blood transfusions in blood deserts when banked blood is not readily available and the alternative is almost-certain death. This protocol is designed to evaluate the effectiveness and implementation of a CWBB at Lodwar County Referral Hospital loca

BACKGROUND: Field transfusion of whole blood is vital for patients in hemorrhagic shock, particularly in austere or resource-limited environments. Military use of warm fresh whole blood (WFWB) has inspired civilian interest in walking blood banks (WBBs) for rural, prehospital, and mass casualty settings where blood product access is limited. However, standardized training and proficiency benchmarks are lacking. This project developed a checklist and established validity evidence to assess provider proficiency in WFWB collection and transfusion.

Women contribute modestly to the blood supply in the Eastern Mediterranean region. The capability, opportunity, motivation-behavior model can be used to understand this phenomenon further. The framework suggests that capability, opportunity, and motivation are prerequisites for behavior. Most of the previously published research in Saudi Arabia has focused on motivation. This study aimed to evaluate the capability of donating blood among women who present to blood banks for donation and to compare the findings with those of men. A retrospective analysis of blood donor records was conducted to

BACKGROUND: The current risk of contracting a transfusion transmitted infections (TTIs) is unknown in Burundi.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to assess sociodemographic profiles of blood bank donors at Kamenge Teaching Hospital, the prevalence and associated risk factors of HIV, syphilis, HBV and HCV from 2015 to 2020.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study including all blood donors of Kamenge Teaching Hospital blood bank. During this study, 1370 blood samples were screened for HIV, Syphilis, HBV and HCV. We calculated prevalence of TTIs and performed logistic regression to kn

BACKGROUND: The second blood group determination or group check sample is a process of verifying the ABO group with a second blood sample prior to transfusion. It has been used to detect errors related to wrong blood in tube (WBIT) events and reduce the risk of ABO-incompatible transfusions. To prevent the clinical team from collecting the group check sample at the same time as the first sample, a tan top tube only available from the blood bank was introduced for second blood group determinations if drawn within 24 h of the first group and screen.

INTRODUCTION: The transfusion of emergency blood is an essential part of haemostatic resuscitation. Locally, where direct access to a blood bank is limited, emergency blood is stored within emergency centres. It was previously suggested that stored blood provides inadequate volumes compared to what is needed. Minimal data are available regarding indications for emergency blood usage. We aimed to describe the utilisation of emergency blood in selected Cape Town emergency centres.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out at three secondary level emergency centres (no blood

Human umbilical cord blood contains enough hematopoietic stem cells for transplantation instead of marrow cells to cure children and adults with leukemia and other potentially fatal marrow disorders. An international cord blood transplantation registry is currently collecting information about the results of these transplants. As a result of relative immune deficiency at birth, it is likely that partially matched unrelated transplants can be successful; for this purpose an international cord blood banking project is described.

Directed sibling cord blood banking is indicated in women delivering healthy babies who already have a sibling with a disease that is potentially treatable with an allogeneic cord blood transplant. We evaluated the effectiveness of a national directed cord blood banking program in sibling HLA-identical stem cell transplantation for hematological malignancies and the factors influencing the usage rate of the stored cord blood units. Fifty families were enrolled from which, 48 cord blood units were successfully collected and 2 collections failed due to damaged cord/placenta at delivery. Among en

The existence and sustenance of the blood bank depends on blood donors. It is imperative that the donation experience is satisfactory for the donors. Therefore this study was carried out to determine the frequency of undesirable events experienced by the blood donor as part of donor haemovigilance. This was a retrospective descriptive study of the events that occurred amongst the blood donors of the blood bank of a tertiary institution. The blood donor incident book was reviewed for the period of six months. Negative undesirable events occurred in 2% of the donor populations, of which 45.8% co

The allogenic transplantation of hemopoietic stem cell from bone marrow and peripheral blood is limited due to the necessity to identify HLA matched donor within the family or in bone marrow donor registries. Although, more than 10 million donors are available worldwide, completely HLA matched donors could be found only for 75% of the patients. It is well known that transplantations of hematopoietic stem cell from cord blood are characterized with a lower risk of GvHD and therefore do not require so strict criteria for HLA matching, and less time for search of matched donor is needed. The nece
