Static electric field exposure decreases white blood cell count in peripheral blood through activating hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis.

With the development of ultra-high-voltage (UHV) direct-current (DC) transmission, the health risk from the static electric field (SEF) generated by UHV DC transmission lines has drawn public attention. To investigate the effect of SEF exposure on white blood cell (WBC) count, mice were exposed to 56.3 kV/m SEF. Results revealed that total WBC count and lymphocyte count significantly decreased and serum levels of corticotropin-releasing hormone, adrenocorticotropic hormone and corticosterone (CORT) significantly increased after the exposure of 7d and 14d. All indices above recovered after the

Association of Helicobacter pylori infection and white blood cell count: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Helicobacter pylori is a type of Gram-negative microaerobic bacteria that inhabits the gastric mucosal epithelium. It can cause various gastrointestinal diseases including gastritis, peptic ulcer and gastric cancer. White blood cells (WBC) are common immune cells, the increase in whose countoften indicates the presence of an infection. Currently, the relationship between H. pylori and WBC count remains full of controversy. This study aims to further elucidate the effects of H. pylori on WBC count in a population undergoing physical examination. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: A total of 8

White blood cell count trajectory and mortality in septic shock: a historical cohort study.

PURPOSE: Septic shock is associated with a mortality of 20-40%. The white blood cell count (WBC) at hospital admission correlates with prognosis in septic shock. Here, we explore whether the trajectory of WBC after admission provides further information about outcomes. We aimed to identify groups of patients with different WBC trajectories and the association of WBC trajectory with mortality. METHODS: We included adult patients with septic shock in two academic intensive care units (ICU) in Winnipeg, MB, Canada between 2006 and 2012. We used group-based trajectory analysis to group patients a

What is the origin of the normal ranges of blood cell counts? An evolutionary perspective.

BACKGROUND: The normal values of the complete blood count are part of the foundational medical knowledge that is seldom questioned due to their well-established nature. These normal values are critical for optimal physiological function while minimizing the harmful consequences of an excessive number of blood cells. Thus, they represent an evolutionary trade-off likely shaped by natural selection if they significantly influence individual fitness and exhibit heritability. METHODS: On the basis of the analysis of normal blood count values of 94 mammalian species, we discovered that certain par

Hepatic Steatosis Is Associated with High White Blood Cell and Platelet Counts.

The incidence of hepatic steatosis is increasing globally, and it is important to identify those at risk to prevent comorbidities. Complete blood count is a simple, convenient, and inexpensive laboratory examination which can be used to obtain white blood cell (WBC) and platelet counts. The aims of this study were to investigate the relationships between WBC and platelet counts with hepatic steatosis, and whether WBC and platelet counts were associated with the severity of hepatic steatosis. We enrolled 1969 participants residing in southern Taiwan who took part in a health survey from June 20

Effect of antipsychotics on serum lithium levels and white blood cell counts.

Lithium carbonate is used to increase white blood cell counts as a means of counteracting leukopenia caused by the administration of antipsychotic drugs. To evaluate the effect of antipsychotics on the leukocyte-enhancing effect of lithium, we compared white blood cell counts, serum lithium levels, and lithium dosage in patients receiving antipsychotics and lithium in combination and patients receiving lithium alone. Chlorpromazine equivalent values were used as an indicator of the antipsychotic dose. Lithium serum levels were measured in 41 hospitalized patients. The lithium dose in the combi

Phlegmonous appendicitis in children is characterized by eosinophilia in white blood cell counts.

BACKGROUND: Phlegmonous and complicated appendicitis represent independent entities depending on hereditary immunological mechanisms. However, clinically there are no means to distinguish uncomplicated phlegmonous from complicated appendicitis. The ability to distinguish these two forms of appendicitis is relevant as current attempts are to treat both forms of the disease differently. The aim of the present study was to investigate differences in white blood cell counts (WBCs) in these conditions to identify areas of interest for future molecular studies. METHODS: White blood cell counts of p

Decreased blood dendritic cell counts in type 1 diabetic children.

In this study DC numbers, phenotype and DC responses to the Toll-like receptor (TLR)-3 ligand, poly I:C, were examined in new-onset Type 1 diabetes (T1D) patients (ND) and in established T1D patients (ED). Absolute blood myeloid DC (MDC) and plasmacytoid DC (PDC) numbers were decreased in ND and ED patients compared to age-matched controls. The decrease in MDC and PDC counts was less evident in patients with a combination of T1D and coeliac disease (CD) or CD alone. The age-dependent decline in blood DC numbers, found in control children, was not evident in ND patients, such that 2-10 years ol

Effect of protein deprivation on hematopoietic stem cells and on peripheral blood counts.

Experiments were performed to determined the effect of protein deprivation on CFU-S in the spleen and femoral marrow, on the peripheral blood counts, and on the rate at which these parameters regenerate following radiation. Splenic CFU-S decrease in number after only 3 days on diets containing 5% protein or less. Marrow CFU-S, on the other hand, decrease only after mice are fed a protein-free diet for 4 weeks or more. The hematocrits, platelet counts, and WBC counts fall in the latter group. Marrow CFU-S regenerate more slowly in irradiated mice fed diets containing 5% protein or less. Also, t

Quantification of red blood cell fragmentation: usefulness of heating cells and of automatic counting devices.

Spontaneous red blood cell (RBC) fragmentation occurs in some membrane erythropathies like hereditary elliptocytosis (HE); this phenomenon is produced in normal RBC by heating at 49 degrees C, but not at temperatures below this limit; fragmentation is usually quantified by counting the number of fragments/1000 RBC under light microscopic examination. The present work demonstrates: i) that enumeration of fragments is performed more precisely with an automatic blood cells counter on the 'platelet' channel; and ii) that heating at 48 degrees C enhances the fragmentation of RBC when they have a se

Comprehensive reference intervals for white blood cell counts during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: White blood cell (WBC) count increases during pregnancy, necessitating reliable reference intervals for assessing infections and pregnancy-related complications. This study aimed to establish comprehensive reference intervals for WBC counts during pregnancy. METHODS: The analysis included 17,737 pregnant women, with weekly WBC count measurements from pre-pregnancy to postpartum. A threshold linear regression model determined reference intervals, while Harris and Boyd's test partitioned the intervals. RESULTS: WBC count exhibited a significant increase during pregnancy, characteri

Factor predicting total nucleated cell counts in cord blood units.

BACKGROUND: Cord blood (CB) stem cells have been used worldwide in transplant medicine to treat various diseases. The efficacy of stem cells in umbilical CB (UCB) can be predicted by the number of total nucleated cells (TNCs). To optimize the clinical use of stem cells in our population, this study addresses several variables affecting the TNC count. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: This observational, cross-sectional study was conducted in a single center from 2012 to 2014. In total, 957 CB units (CBUs) were collected from consented mothers. Data analyses of clinically accepted CBUs were correlated

Nucleated red blood cell counts: not associated with brain injury or outcome.

The objective was to determine whether an elevated nucleated red blood cell count at birth after perinatal depression is associated with brain injury as measured by (1) proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy and (2) abnormal neurodevelopmental outcome at 30 months of age. The nucleated red blood cell counts from the first 24 hours of life were statistically analyzed in 33 term infants enrolled in a prospective study of the value of magnetic resonance imaging for the determination of neurodevelopmental outcome after perinatal depression. Nucleated red blood cell counts were elevated in 13/33 (3

Application of the ADVIA cerebrospinal fluid assay to count residual red blood cells in blood components.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: There is no automated, accurate assay for the enumeration of residual red blood cells (rRBCs) in non-RBC components for transfusion, despite the potential risk of allo-immunization when mismatched components are transfused. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The automated ADVIA 120 cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) assay, which is approved to count RBCs and WBCs in CSF samples, was optimized and tested to measure rRBC in platelet concentrate (PC) and plasma components. RESULTS: Sample dilution, incubation time and reagent volume were optimized for use with non-RBC blood products. The

Utility of Symptom Duration and C-Reactive Protein, White Blood Cell Count, and Absolute Neutrophil Count in the Evaluation of Pediatric Appendicitis.

BACKGROUND: Appendicitis is a common pediatric surgical emergency, and the diagnosis may be delayed or missed because of nonspecific findings in children. Not all patients with abdominal pain need to be imaged for appendicitis, and laboratory evaluation may improve diagnostic accuracy in this population. OBJECTIVE: To determine if C-reactive protein (CRP) and symptom duration could be used to improve diagnosis of appendicitis compared with white blood cell count (WBC) and absolute neutrophil count (ANC). METHODS: This was a retrospective chart review from June 2017 to 2019 at our tertiary ac

Peripheral blood inflammatory cell ratios derived from complete blood count as predictors of multiple sclerosis disease activity and severity.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disorder affecting the central nervous system. This retrospective cohort study analyzed medical records of 98 MS patients to evaluate the predictive role of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) in disease activity and severity. High NLR exhibited the strongest predictive value, with a cutoff >2.681 yielding sensitivity of 97.6% and specificity of 85.7% for severe disease. Elevated MLR was also associated with disease severity and activity, though less predictive than NLR. PLR wa
