Evaluation of blood cultures following laparoscopy.

To determine the incidence of transient bacteremia associated with laparoscopy, a prospective study was carried out in 113 patients with diverse liver diseases. Blood samples for aerobic and anaerobic cultures were obtained for each patient immediately before laparoscopy, within three minutes after creation of pneumoperitoneum and within three minutes after needle biopsy of the liver. Five subjects were culture positive, and all isolates were of the propionibacterium species. Positive cultures did not correlate with the nature of underlying liver disease, and none of these patients developed c

A Recurrent Blood Culture-Negative Endocarditis Revealing Whipple's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Blood culture-negative infective endocarditis (BCNIE) represents a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. The main reasons for negative blood cultures are prior antibiotic exposure, fungal infection, or infection with fastidious bacteria. CASE SUMMARY: Here, we describe the case of a 61-year-old patient with recurrent BCNIE initially diagnosed as rheumatoid arthritis but ultimately diagnosed as Whipple's endocarditis. DISCUSSION: Whipple's disease is a rare, chronic, multisystemic infection that may relapse if diagnosis is delayed. Whipple's endocarditis is often misdiagnosed, and

Antimicrobial Sensitivity Trend in Blood Culture Positive Enteric Fever.

BACKGROUND: For diagnosis of enteric fever, the culture of the organism from different body fluids is the gold standard. After diagnosis, it is important to treat with the right antibiotic before any complications can occur. The retrospective study is designed to explore the antibiotic sensitivity trend in blood culture positive typhoid fever cases and the extent of drug resistance before treatment is administered. METHODS: A retrospective study was carried out for culture isolated enteric fever patients admitted in Kathmandu Model Hospital. The discharged records from January 2012 to Decembe

Blood culture-positive infections in patients with alcoholic hepatitis.

Acute alcoholic hepatitis (AH) is a life-threatening disease and its course is often determined by infections. However, the pattern of pathogens has not been studied. We examined the microbiological pathogens that caused blood-borne infection in patients with AH. We included 32 AH patients without infection at inclusion. Patients were followed for 1 month and their infection status was recorded based on clinical records, radiologic exams and cultures of different secreta. Nine patients (28%) developed blood culture-positive infections. The agents were of heterogeneous aetiology and came from v

ANTT: an essential tool for effective blood culture collection.

Blood culture collection is an important and topical intravenous procedure for the management of suspected infection. Contaminated samples can lead to 'false positive' results, and inappropriate clinical interventions, which can compromise patient outcome and incur significant expense to healthcare organizations. The contamination of blood culture samples by ineffective aseptic technique has been estimated to be as high as 10% (Department of Health (DH), 2007a). Aseptic Non Touch Technique (ANTT) is a ground-breaking global initiative designed to improve outcomes of aseptic technique through t

Antibiotic sensitivity still prevails in Norwegian blood culture isolates.

We describe the antimicrobial susceptibility of bacteraemia isolates from Norway. From March 1998 to February 1999, four university hospitals covering all parts of Norway collected their first 10 isolates each month. Minimal inhibitory concentrations were determined for: Enterobacteriaceae (n=192), staphylococci (n=89) and Streptococcus pneumoniae (n=69) using the Etest. NCCLS breakpoints were used. About 20% of all blood culture isolates in Norway in this period were investigated. Compared with countries outside Scandinavia antibiotic sensitivity still prevails. Only minor differences in resi

Survival of leptospires in commercial blood culture systems revisited.

AIM: To assess the ability of commercial blood culture systems to maintain leptospires. METHODS: Nine different commercial blood culture bottles were compared for their ability to maintain four leptospiral strains at two temperatures, 30 degrees C and 37 degrees C. Bottles were subcultured at 48 hours, and one, two, three, and four week intervals and examined microscopically for the presence of viable leptospires. RESULTS: The results were comparable with those of an earlier study, which showed that different commercial blood culture systems varied in their ability to maintain leptospires.

Bacteriological culture of blood from critically ill neonatal calves.

The objectives of this study were to estimate the prevalence of bacteremia in critically ill, neonatal calves with severe diarrhea or depression, and to describe the variety of bacteria involved. Two studies were conducted in the summers of 1991 and 1993 involving 190 neonatal calves, 1-day to 19-days-old. Bacteremia was detected by blood culture in 31% (28/90) of calves in study 1, and in 24% (19/79) of ill calves and 0% (0/21) of control calves in study 2. Bacteria cultured from blood included Escherichia coli (51% of all isolates), other gram-negative enterics (25.5%), gram-negative anaerob

Detection of bacteremia by Difco ESP blood culture system.

In a multicenter study, the Difco ESP blood culture system (Difco Laboratories, Detroit, Mich.) was compared with the BACTEC NR660 system (Becton Dickinson Diagnostic Instrument Systems, Sparks, Md.). The ESP system monitors each blood culture bottle every 12 to 24 min to detect changes in oxygen consumption and gas production by microbes. Equal volumes of blood were inoculated into aerobic ESP-80A and BACTEC 6A, 16A, or PEDS Plus broths and anaerobic ESP-80N and BACTEC 7A or 17A broths and were incubated for up to 7 days. ESP bottles contain supplemented tryptic soy broth without antimicrobia

Multicenter comparison of MicroScan and BACTEC blood culture systems.

Recently, MicroScan (Baxter MicroScan Div., W. Sacramento, Calif.) introduced a radiolabeled-blood-culture system that is compatible with the BACTEC 460 (Johnston Laboratories, Inc., Towson, Md.). A multicenter blood culture study was initiated to evaluate this new system. Approximately 20 ml of blood was obtained from each patient and divided equally between BACTEC and MicroScan bottles which were incubated and processed identically. Aerobic bottles were examined twice on days 1 and 2 and once on days 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7. Anaerobic bottles were examined once a day for 7 days. There were 3,451 c

Detection of Mycoplasma hominis septicemia by radiometric blood culture.

The ease with which Mycoplasma hominis can be recovered and the frequency of its occurrence in septicemia may not be fully appreciated. We detected the growth of M. hominis radiometrically with an automated blood culture instrument. The organism grew in both aerobic and anaerobic culture media, but the cultures were not visibly positive. It was necessary to stain the cultures with acridine orange to visualize M. hominis and to subculture them on Columbia base sheep blood agar to confirm the positive growth index indicated by the instrument. Sodium polyanetholesulfonate inhibited the growth of

Blood culture pathways in UK hospitals: an exploratory survey.

BACKGROUND: Timely blood culture (BC) processing is key for optimising antimicrobial therapy in bloodstream infections. However, variability in pre-analytical, analytical, and postanalytical workflows may limit the clinical benefits of rapid diagnostics. METHODS: We conducted a nationwide survey (1st February, 2024-6th February, 2025) of microbiology laboratories across England and Scotland to assess BC pathways, turnaround times for organism identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST), availability of rapid methods, operational hours, and result communication. Blood culture collection practices in NICU; A national survey.

BACKGROUND: Sepsis is the leading cause of mortality and morbidity in neonates. Blood cultures are the gold standard in diagnosing neonatal sepsis; however, there are currently no consensus guidelines for blood culture collection in neonates and significant practice variation exists in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) globally. OBJECTIVE: To examine current practices in obtaining blood cultures in the evaluation of neonatal sepsis in NICUs across Canada. METHODS: A nine-item electronic survey was sent to each of the 29 level-3 NICUs in Canada, which are equipped to provide highly specia

[Method for obtaining blood culture while diagnosing bloodstream infection.].

Diagnosing of bloodstream infection (BSI) in outpatients is essential. A large blood volume is required to obtain blood culture (CLSI): 2 sets, 40ml of blood for diagnosing in 95% cases of bacteremia. Molecular-genetic methods can not replace blood culture method, but they accelerate the identification of any pathogen. Culturomics gives a combination of different conditions for isolating microorganisms from a sample and along with their genetic identification. We used the patent method for direct inoculation of buffy-coat from 4,5ml of a venous blood sample and MALDI-ToF identification method.

Blood culture-negative endocarditis presenting as altered mental status.

Blood culture-negative endocarditis (BCNE) is difficult to diagnose because one of the major criteria to raise suspicion for endocarditis, a positive blood culture, is absent. BCNE accounts for 2.5% to 31% of all cases of endocarditis. Our report describes a 69-year-old woman with end-stage renal disease who presented with altered mental status. Physical examination and testing, including complete blood count, comprehensive metabolic panel, chest X-ray and head CT were otherwise unremarkable. Brain MRI revealed multiple areas of decreased diffusion concerning for cardioembolic stroke. A transt
