Shift work, sleep duration, and body image dissatisfaction among female workers in southern Brazil.

We examined the association between shift work and sleep duration with body image dissatisfaction (BID) among shift-working women in southern Brazil. In this cross-sectional study, data of 505 women shift workers, between 18 and 60 years old, were collected between January and April 2011. BID was assessed using the Stunkard Figure Rating Scale. Information on shift work, sleep duration, and other explanatory variables was collected through a questionnaire. An aggregated exposure variable was created and termed "sleep deprivation," with the exposure category being night-shift workers who slept

Body dissatisfaction among Chinese undergraduates and its implications for eating disorders in Hong Kong.

OBJECTIVES: To study the body dissatisfaction of Chinese undergraduates and its implications for eating disorders in Hong Kong. METHOD: A large sample of 1,581 subjects completed a "Body Dissatisfaction Questionnaire" (BDQ) which included 25 items about various body parts and questions on body indices, body shape dissatisfaction, and dieting. RESULTS: Whereas male subjects wanted to be taller and stronger in their upper body, the majority of female subjects felt fat in their lower body and were cognitively inclined to weigh less even though they were not obese. They desired a slimming of the

Body Image Disturbance and Body Dissatisfaction in Sisters of Adolescent Girls with Anorexia Nervosa: A Narrative Review and a Preliminary Study.

Background: Body image disturbance (BID) involves a distorted perception of one's body, whereas body dissatisfaction (BDS) reflects negative affective evaluation of body appearance. Both are central features of eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa (AN), but their expression in siblings of affected individuals remains underexplored, particularly in younger populations. Methods: This cross-sectional preliminary study included 53 full sisters of adolescent patients with severe AN treated in a tertiary hospital. Participants underwent anthropometric assessment and completed standardized measu

The development of associations among body mass index, body dissatisfaction, and weight and shape concern in adolescent boys and girls.

PURPOSE: To examine how the associations among body mass index (BMI) and body dissatisfaction and weight and shape concern evolve from late childhood through late adolescence in boys and girls. METHODS: We analyze data from subjects aged 9-18 years from the Growing Up Today Study, a national prospective cohort of U.S. youth (n = 16,882, yielding 59,750 repeated-measures observations during five waves of data collection). Generalized additive models produced curves of association for body dissatisfaction and weight concern across BMI percentiles. Generalized estimating equations (adjusting for

Validation of two body scales for assessment of thin-ideal and muscularity-ideal body dissatisfaction among Chinese adult females.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have demonstrated the significant impact of body dissatisfaction on the physical and mental well-being of women. China's culture idealizes thinness and beauty, and women are more prone to experiencing body dissatisfaction. However, research on women's body dissatisfaction has predominantly focused on Western societies, with limited investigations conducted in China. Meanwhile, there exists a dearth of specific measurement tools for assessing Chinese adult women's body dissatisfaction. Therefore, the work aimed to assess the reliability of the Female Body Scale (FBS

Gay Dating Apps Usage, Body Dissatisfaction, and Disordered Eating in Chinese Young Gay Men.

There is a paucity of research on the links between gay dating apps usage and body dissatisfaction and disordered eating, especially for muscularity dissatisfaction and muscularity-oriented disordered eating in non-Western contexts. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the associations between gay dating apps usage, body image inflexibility, body dissatisfaction, and disordered eating with the inclusion of both body fat and muscularity dissatisfaction and both thinness-and muscularity-oriented disordered eating in a sample of Chinese young gay men. A total of 247 Chinese young gay men (mean age:

Body image dissatisfaction and eating-related psychopathology in trans individuals: a matched control study.

High levels of body dissatisfaction have already been reported in the trans population; however, the root of this dissatisfaction, and its association with eating disordered behaviours, has not been studied in-depth. This study aims to assess eating disorder risk by comparing 200 trans people, 200 people with eating disorders and 200 control participants' scores on three subscales of the Eating Disorders Inventory-2 (EDI-2) and to further explore dissatisfaction in the trans participants using the Hamburg Body Drawing Scale (HBDS). The results showed that overall participants with eating disor

Analyzing body dissatisfaction and gender dysphoria in the context of minority stress among transgender adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Gender dysphoria among transgender adolescents has predominantly been examined in relation to body dissatisfaction. While in adult transgender samples, body dissatisfaction is higher than in cisgender controls, this has so far rarely been investigated for adolescents. In the context of a cisnormative society, the impact of influences from the social environment on body dissatisfaction and gender dysphoria has been neglected in research. Therefore, this study aimed to (1) provide a detailed analysis of body dissatisfaction among young transgender people and (2) investigate whether b

Temperament and psychopathology in early childhood predict body dissatisfaction and eating disorder symptoms in adolescence.

Eating disorders (ED) are highly impairing and dangerous conditions that typically onset in adolescence. However, very few prospective studies have examined early childhood risk factors for ED pathology. Given well-established links between temperament and psychopathology, examination of these factors could inform prevention efforts. The current multi-method, multi-informant prospective longitudinal study tested whether laboratory-observed and parent-reported temperament and psychiatric disorders at ages 3 and 6 (N = 609) predict body dissatisfaction at ages 12 and 15 and dimensional symptoms

Influence of peer context on the relationship between body dissatisfaction and eating pathology in women and men.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the influence of peer context on the relationship between body dissatisfaction and eating pathology in women and men. METHOD: Secondary analyses were conducted using survey data from a large community sample of women and men (N = 2,060). RESULTS: The frequency of friend comments on weight and diet moderated the relationship between body dissatisfaction and eating pathology such that more frequent comments strengthened the relationship between body dissatisfaction and eating pathology in women. This effect was not significant in analyses of men. Instead, friend

Body dissatisfaction in women with eating disorders: relationship to early separation anxiety and insecure attachment.

OBJECTIVE: It has been suggested that an insecure style of attachment may be one of the factors implicated in the etiology of body dissatisfaction, which, in turn, is a risk factor for eating disorders. The present study analyzed the association among early separation anxiety, insecure attachment, and body dissatisfaction in a clinical sample of 96 women with anorexia nervosa (n = 31) or bulimia nervosa (n = 65). METHODS: Body dissatisfaction was measured using the Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ), early separation anxiety was measured using the Separation Anxiety Symptom Inventory (SASI), and

Sociocultural and developmental influences on body dissatisfaction and disordered eating attitudes and behaviors of Asian women.

This study is an examination of the influence of sociocultural and developmental factors on body dissatisfaction and disordered eating attitudes and behaviors in two Asian populations: 298 Taiwanese-American (TA) women undergoing acculturating changes and 347 Taiwanese (T) women undergoing modernizing changes. Contrary to the initial hypothesis, body dissatisfaction rates and disordered eating attitudes and behaviors were found to be significantly higher in the T group. Subjects in the T group had higher Taiwanese ethnic identity scores but also lower perceptions of maternal control. Body diss

Body dissatisfaction and its interrelations with other risk factors for bulimia nervosa in 12 countries.

BACKGROUND: It is widely accepted that risk factors for bulimia nervosa, mainly body dissatisfaction, are dependent on cultural factors. However, to date few studies have compared data from different cultures with an appropriate methodology. Therefore we aimed to gather reliable information on body dissatisfaction and other risk factors for bulimia from different nations and to reveal their functional interrelations. METHODS: A series of 10 silhouettes, designed to be as far as possible free from cultural and other detailed aspects, was shown to 1,751 medical and nursing students in 12 nation

Unique associations between young adult men's emotional functioning and their body dissatisfaction and disordered eating.

Research on emotional functioning, body dissatisfaction, and disordered eating in males is predominated by studies of negative affect and emotion regulation. Other aspects of emotional functioning, namely emotion recognition and attentional biases toward emotional stimuli, have received little empirical attention. The present study investigated the unique associations between different aspects of men's emotional functioning and their disordered eating attitudes, muscularity dissatisfaction, and body fat dissatisfaction. Results from 132 male undergraduates showed that muscularity dissatisfacti

Body dissatisfaction and methamphetamine use among HIV-positive gay and bisexual men: a pilot study.

Methamphetamine use is strongly associated with risky sex and increased reports of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections among gay and bisexual men (GBM) who attend dance/circuit parties. The psychological mechanisms underlying methamphetamine use in this subculture, however, remain unclear. These exploratory findings are from a 2004 dataset measuring body dissatisfaction and drug use among 42 HIV-positive GBM in South Florida who attended at least one bar/club/circuit party within 3 months of participating. A multivariate regression model revealed that body dissatisfaction accounted f

When ideals are too "far off': physical self-ideal discrepancy and body dissatisfaction in Japan.

There is much evidence that young Japanese adults manifest relatively low body esteem-a phenomenon often explained as an outcome of modesty or limited need for self-enhancement. The author sought to identify additional determinants of this phenomenon and to explain its sources by examining the relationship between several presumed factors and level of body satisfaction rated by 263 Japanese students. The findings confirm earlier evidence of low body satisfaction among young Japanese adults and indicate that it is predicted mainly by a discrepancy between perceptions of the actual body and the

Differences in menopausal quality of life, body appreciation, and body dissatisfaction between women at high and low risk of an eating disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Experiences of menopause and quality of life during menopause can vary extensively among women. While menopause has been associated with negative impacts on eating and body image, it is unclear to what extent quality of life differs by eating disorder risk status. The aim of this study was to explore how menopause symptoms and quality of life differ between those women at high- or low-risk of an eating disorder and the potential protective role of body appreciation. METHOD: This cross-sectional survey study explored differences in menopausal quality of life, body appreciation, and
