Systemic Elimination Rather than Redistribution: Segmental Body Water Analysis after Leg Lymphovenous Anastomosis.

Lymphovenous anastomosis (LVA) is a microsurgical procedure that redirects stagnant lymph flow into the venous circulation, reducing fluid stasis in patients with secondary limb lymphedema. Although previous studies have reported that complex decongestive therapy redistributes fluid from the affected leg to other body segments, whether fluid reduction after LVA results from systemic elimination or intersegmental redistribution remains unclear. This study aimed to clarify the mechanism by analyzing the changes in segmental body water (SBW) volume using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA).We

A predictive model for body water and fluid balance using 3D smartphone anthropometry.

BACKGROUND: Body fluid volumes, including total body water (TBW), extracellular fluid (ECF), and intracellular fluid (ICF), are crucial indicators of body composition, and the distribution of these fluids is essential for assessing hydration status and fluid accumulation. Although fluid volumes are commonly measured with bioelectrical impedance devices, several challenges hinder the application of this technique. However, 3D smartphone scanning applications that automate body volumes and other anthropometric estimates may provide a viable alternative to body fluid assessments. METHODS: A tota

Increased extracellular water/body mass is associated with functional impairment in hemodialysis patients.

BACKGROUND: Functional impairment, malnutrition and fluid overload are prevalent in patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis (MHD). The extracellular water/body cell mass ratio (ECW/BCM) is a new indicator reflecting fluid overload and malnutrition. A previous study has suggested that it performs better than other indices in assessing fluid status. This study investigates the relationship between pre-dialysis whole-body ECW/BCM and physical function in MHD patients. METHODS: We conducted a multicenter, cross-sectional study in Guizhou Province in Southwest China. The Karnofsky Performance

Depth-Dependent Spatiotemporal Dynamics of Overwintering Pelagic Microcystis in a Temperate Water Body.

Cyanobacteria in the genus Microcystis are dominant components of many harmful algal blooms worldwide. Their pelagic-benthic life cycle helps them survive periods of adverse conditions and contributes greatly to their ecological success. Many studies on Microcystis overwintering have focused on benthic colonies and suggest that sediment serves as the major inoculum for subsequent summer blooms. However, the contemporaneous overwintering pelagic population may be important as well but is understudied. In this study, we investigated near-surface and near-bottom pelagic population dynamics of bot

Dynamic changes in body form during swimming in the water snake Nerodia sipedon.

Video records of swimming water snakes show that during moderate to rapid swimming, the rear half to two-thirds of the trunk is compressed laterally, approaching the body form of some sea snakes. Body form of swimming snakes differed significantly from their shape when resting on a flat surface or when anesthetized and suspended in water. The extent of lateral flattening is positively correlated with swimming speed, a relationship generally supported by tests of trunk models in a flow tank. In Nerodia, the ability to temporarily flatten the trunk depends on kinetic costovertebral joints, a lar

Extracellular fluid and total body water changes in neonates undergoing extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.

After being placed on extracorporeal life support (ECLS), newborn patients typically weight 5% to 30% more than their birthweight. Recovery and eventual decannulation from ECLS is associated with a return to baseline weight or birthweight values after a pronounced diuresis. It has been assumed that the increases in weight in these patients are due to increases in extracellular fluid (ECF) and total body water (TBW). This study was undertaken to prove or disprove this hypothesis. ECF space was measured using the compound sodium bromide and TBW was determined with the use of deuterium oxide (non

Hypertension profiling by total body water (TBW) determinations in patients on chronic hemodialysis.

Hypertension is an important risk factor in hemodialysis patients. Fluid overload and increased peripheral resistance are considered the two main causes. We studied the relation between volume state and blood pressure in 18 hemodialysis patients. Actual total body water (aTBW) was measured as tritium space and "ideal" total body water (iTBW) by an anthropometric method. The difference between aTBW and iTBW was considered a measure of fluid excess or deficit. Twelve patients were overhydrated, 5%-23%. Their predialysis blood pressure was significantly correlated to their degree of fluid excess;

Reduction in plasma protein does not affect body water content in fetal sheep.

We performed this study to determine if isolated hypoproteinemia and low colloid osmotic pressure cause formation of fetal edema. We successfully operated on six sets of twin fetal sheep at 114 d gestation to insert catheters into arteries and veins of both fetuses, allowing us to chronically perform partial exchange transfusions. One twin underwent protein reduction by repeated partial exchange transfusion over 3 d, and the other twin underwent simultaneous sham procedures. We removed an average of 18 g of protein, causing a 41% decrease in plasma protein concentration and a 44% decrease in c

[Effect of the model of "dry" immersion on the indicators of water-electrolyte metabolism and aldosterone and cortisol in the plasma of persons with different levels of body water].

Experiments were carried out to study the effect of dry immersion on fluid-electrolyte metabolism, aldosterone and cortisol content in 22 test subjects with varying content of water in the organism. It was found that dry immersion produced a diuretic effect and facilitated a higher excretion of electrolytes and a lower aldosterone content. The test subjects with a higher content of water in the organism (16 subjects) exhibited a more distinct and prolonged polyuria. During the recovery period the aldosterone content increased insignificantly and failed to return to the baseline level, in contr

The clinical application value of the extracellular-water-to-total-body-water ratio obtained by bioelectrical impedance analysis in people with advanced cancer.

OBJECTIVES: Body-composition analysis using bioelectrical impedance analysis is gradually becoming more widely used in clinical practice. The ratio of extracellular water (ECW) to total body water (TBW) is thought to be related to the prognosis of a variety of diseases. However, its performance in people with advanced cancer deserves further discussion. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on 784 people with advanced cancer. Anthropometric indicators, serologic indicators, nutritional status, health-related quality of life, and body composition were analyzed. Participants were grou

Impact of therapeutic pharmaceuticals on water bodies: diagnosis, ecological threat, and removal strategies.

Among emerging contaminants, pharmaceutical compounds have garnered significant scientific attention due to their presence in the environment and potential adverse effects on aquatic ecosystems and human health. The detection of pharmaceutical compounds, their ecological threat, and water quality was evaluated at six points along the Cauca River, Colombia's second most important river. The detected compounds included diclofenac, ibuprofen, naproxen, and paracetamol, with the latter presenting maximum concentrations of up to 4.20μg/L. Domestic wastewater discharges impacted the river's water qu

Changes in Body Water Composition and Severity of Respiratory Disease in Very Preterm Infants.

INTRODUCTION: Acute respiratory disorders and bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) are frequent and serious complications in very preterm infants (VPI). These conditions are influenced by several factors, including fluid imbalances and abnormal postnatal changes in body water composition (BWC). We aimed to investigate the association between BWC and the severity of respiratory disease in VPI using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). MATERIAL AND METHODS: We conducted an observational study in a third-level neonatal intensive care unit at Reunion Island University Hospital. Infants born before

Monitoring of antimicrobial resistance genes and influenza viruses in avian-populated water bodies.

Monitoring zoonotic and multi-species pathogens is challenging due to the resources required to sample individual animals. In this study, we propose the use of DNA/RNA detection methods to assess the prevalence of bacterial, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and viral markers in 19 water sites in England and Wales where close contact occurs with avian species. For bacteria and AMR monitoring, we utilized high-throughput quantitative polumerase chain reaction (HT-qPCR), which revealed a consistent abundance of AMR genes and mobile genetic elements, with aminoglycoside-resistance gene aadA7 being

Simple and Accurate One-Body Energy and Dipole Moment Surfaces for Water and Beyond.

Water is often the testing ground for new, advanced force fields. While advanced functional forms for intermolecular interactions have been integral to the development of accurate water models, less attention has been paid to a transferable model for intramolecular valence terms. In this work, we present a one-body energy and dipole moment surface model, named 1B-UCB, that is simple yet accurate and can be feasibly adapted for both standard and advanced potentials. 1B-UCB for water is comparable in accuracy to those with much more complex functional forms, despite having drastically fewer para
