Impact of body weight on clinical symptoms and endoscopic changes in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease.

INTRODUCTION: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is connected with body mass index (BMI) according to some recent studies. However, the link between overweight and severity of GERD symptoms is still unclear. OBJECTIVES: The aim of our study is to assess the influence of BMI on clinical presentation and occurrence of inflammatory changes in the esophagus in patients with GERD. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 121 clinically diagnosed GERD patients: 66 males (54.5%) and 55 females (45.5%), aged 19 – 89 years were involved in the study. After the detailed anamnesis BMI was counted and gastroscopy was

Reduced protein availability by albumen removal during chicken embryogenesis decreases body weight and induces hormonal changes.

What is the central question of this study? Prenatal protein undernutrition by albumen removal in an avian model of fetal programming leads to long-term programming effects, but when do these effects first appear and are these programming effects regulated by the same candidate genes as in mammals? What is the main finding and its importance? The present results indicate that prenatal protein undernutrition by albumen removal induces phenotypical and hormonal changes in the early posthatch period, when the mismatch between the prenatal and postnatal environment first arises, but these changes

Persistent body-weight change on achalasia and peroral endoscopic myotomy: a multicenter cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The distribution of body weight in patients with achalasia and after peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) has not been investigated. The role of body weight assessment after treatment remains unclear. METHODS: Using the multicenter achalasia cohort, the frequency of underweight (body mass index [BMI] < 18.5 kg/m2) and overweight (BMI ≥ 25.0 kg/m2) and their associated clinical characteristics were analyzed. After POEM, risk factors for insufficient- (underweight persistently) and excessive- (responded to overweight) weight gainers were investigated. The correlation between BMI-increa

Age-related changes in distribution of body weight on soles of feet for selected actions and postures.

We investigated age-related changes in the distribution of body weight on soles of feet in 878 healthy subjects ranging from 5 to 80 years of age. By modifying Morton's Staticometer, we constructed an instrument for measuring body-weight distribution over three areas of soles of the feet, the big toe (inner forefoot), the other four toes combined (outer forefoot) and the heels for both feet, thus a total of six areas. The weights in the six areas were recorded at the completion of nine selected actions and postures. We observed that for inhaling and exhaling standing postures, generally younge

Patterns of weight and body composition change in premenopausal women with early stage breast cancer: has weight gain been overestimated?

The widely documented problem of weight gain during adjuvant breast cancer chemotherapy has decreased in frequency and magnitude. However, adverse changes in body composition remain a problem. This study identified the frequency, magnitude, and patterns of weight and body composition change in a sample of premenopausal breast cancer survivors who were receiving 3 common chemotherapy regimens. The longitudinal study followed 76 women at 2 centers in Ontario, Canada. Measures were obtained at baseline, the start of every other treatment cycle and treatment completion. Participants' mean age was

Transient changes in body weight and behavior during the placentation period in non-human primates and rodents.

During early pregnancy, many women experience physical changes, including nausea and vomiting of pregnancy (NVP), which negatively impact their quality of life. However, the absence of model animals has limited our understanding of such pregnancy-associated physiological changes. Here, we examined pregnancy-associated metabolic and behavioral changes in common marmosets and mice. Marmosets exhibited a transient weight decrease during the period of placental development in approximately 22% of pregnancies. Some marmosets repeatedly showed transient weight loss across multiple pregnancies, sugge

Body weight changes and duration of estrogen exposure modulate the evolution of hepatocellular adenomas after contraception discontinuation.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The natural history of hepatocellular adenomas (HCAs) remains to be better described, especially in nonresected patients. We aim to identify the predictive factors of HCA evolution after estrogen-based contraception discontinuation. APPROACH AND RESULTS: We retrospectively included patients with a histological diagnosis of HCA from three centers. Clinical, radiological, and pathological data were collected to identify predictive factors of radiological evolution per Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors, version 1.1, and occurrence of complications (bleeding, malig

Effect of excessive body weight on foot arch changes in preschoolers a 2-year follow-up study.

BACKGROUND: A stable standing posture, and effective and aesthetic gait, depend heavily on correct anatomical construction of the feet, thanks to which they can play their important role. The shape and height of the foot arches are already formed in the preschool and early school years; therefore, abnormalities and disorders in children's feet, and correlations between foot formation and somatic build, are still crucial and interesting issues for orthopedists, pediatricians, physiotherapists, and podiatrists. This study deals with changes in the height of the longitudinal and transverse arches

Muscle activation changes during body weight support treadmill training after focal cortical ischemia: A rat hindlimb model.

The study used a focal ischemia rat hindlimb model to investigate muscle activity changes during a 10-day body weight support (BWS) treadmill training program. The changes being studied included fatigue effects, EMG burst duration in the gait cycle, and the symmetry of muscle activation between affected and unaffected sides. Intramuscular EMG of medial gastrocnemius (MG) and tibialis anterior (TA) muscles in male Sprague Dawley rats at affected side (n=10) and unaffected side (n=10) were recorded during the treadmill running before a middle cerebral artery occlusion/reperfusion (MCAo/r) surger

Hormonal changes in the immature rat after administration of pregnant mare serum gonadotrophin: influence of body weight.

We have shown previously that pregnant mare serum gonadotrophin (PMSG) induces ovulation only in rats weighing over 60 g on the day of injection. The under-60 g rats do not ovulate although they secrete a preovulatory surge of a pleiomorphic form of LH. Presumably this pleiomorph is inactive. Comparisons were made of plasma hormone concentrations in rats treated with PMSG that weighed over and under 60 g. The measurements were made on samples taken between 13.00 and 22.00 h on the day of the expected preovulatory LH surge. Prolactin and corticosterone levels were lower in the lighter group com

Correlation of changes in body weight and pulmonary vascular pressures with lung water accumulation during fluid overload.

The accumulation of excess lung water is a major concern after the infusion of large amounts of crystalloid solution. The parameters used to monitor total body and lung water balance include changes in body weight, and the measurement of pulmonary vascular and plasma colloid osmotic pressures. We studied the reliability of these parameters in predicting lung water during severe fluid overload in nephrectomized sheep. We found that the normal lung appeared resistant to excess fluid accumulation, particularly when compared to the splanchnic circulation. Body weight change was an unreliable index

Impacts of body weight change on treatment outcomes in patients with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis in Northwest Ethiopia.

Measuring body weight during therapy has received insufficient attention in poor resource settings like Ethiopia. We aimed to investigate the association between weight change during therapy and treatment outcomes among patients with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) in northwest Ethiopia. This retrospective cohort study analysed data from patients with MDR-TB admitted between May 2015 to February 2022 at four treatment facilities in Northwest Ethiopia. We used the joint model (JM) to determine the association between weight change during therapy and treatment outcomes for patients wit

Association of OPRD1 Gene Variants with Changes in Body Weight and Psychometric Indicators in Patients with Eating Disorders.

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate whether genetic variations in the OPRD1 gene affect psychopathological symptoms and personality dimensions in eating disorders (ED) patients and/or contribute to ED risk. Methods: The study involved 221 female patients with anorexia nervosa (AN), 88 with bulimia nervosa (BN), and 396 controls. Sixteen tag-single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in OPRD1 were identified. Psychometric evaluations were conducted using the Symptom Checklist 90 Revised (SCL-90R) and the Eating Disorders Inventory Test-2 (EDI-2). p-values obtained by regression models were

Body mass index, weight change, and clinical progression in mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer disease.

The speed and severity of clinical progression after Alzheimer disease (AD) diagnosis varies and depends on multiple factors, most not well elucidated. We assessed whether body mass index (BMI) and 1-year weight change (WC) are associated with clinical progression in amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) and early-stage AD. Longitudinal data comprising 2268 aMCI and 1506 AD participants in the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center's Uniform Data Set were used to examine nuances of clinical progression by BMI and WC, as well as potential variations in associations by age, sex, BMI (WC mo

Early-life physical activity and postmenopausal breast cancer: effect of body size and weight change.

It is not yet known whether early-life physical activity reduces the risk of developing breast cancer. Subgroup analyses according to menopausal status and body mass may help clarify this association. Data from a population-based case-control study of female residents of Wisconsin, Massachusetts, Maine, and New Hampshire were used to examine associations between body mass and breast cancer risk. Cases (n = 4614) were identified by each state's tumor registry; controls (n = 5817) were randomly selected from population lists. Frequency of participation in strenuous physical activity when 14-22 y

A multi-ancestry polygenic risk score for body mass index predicts longitudinal weight change.

BACKGROUND: Identifying individuals at risk for future weight gain is challenging, partly because associations with traditional clinical risk factors may be biased by confounding and reverse causation. Polygenic risk scores (PRS) provide a stable, lifelong measure of genetic predisposition to obesity. However, existing PRS have not been evaluated for their association with longitudinal weight change in adulthood and often lack generalizability across diverse genetic ancestry groups. METHODS: We conducted ancestry-specific genome-wide association study meta-analyses of body mass index (BMI) in
