Comparative biochemistry and physiology. Part A, Molecular & integrative physiology2025eng
Body temperature influences all physiological processes in ectotherms, including the rise in metabolism upon feeding (SDA response). In reptiles, elevated temperatures increase the magnitude of the SDA response but shorten its duration with total energy expenditure remaining unaffected. Recent studies show that feeding induces a several-fold elevation of protein synthesis in various organs of pythons, but the effects of temperature on postprandial protein synthesis remain unexplored. We therefore measured relative changes in postprandial protein synthesis in skeletal muscle and visceral organs

Two captive 19-y-old green tree pythons (Morelia viridis), a male and a female, were diagnosed with lymphoma. At autopsy, the female was in poor body condition and had an extensive subcutaneous soft tissue mass along the ribs. The mass was composed of numerous neoplastic round cells that were also present in the liver and spleen and within blood vessels. Neoplastic cells had marked, diffuse membranous-to-cytoplasmic immunolabeling for CD3, consistent with disseminated leukemic T-cell lymphoma. The male had a history of chronic spinal deformities and was in poor body condition. All examined org

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) play a vital role in defense against resistant bacteria. In this study, eight different AMPs synthesized from Python reticulatus serum protein were tested for bactericidal activity against various Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Burkholderia pseudomallei (KHW and TES strains), and Proteus vulgaris) using a disc-diffusion method (20 μg/disc). Among the tested peptides, phospholipase A2 inhibitory peptide (PIP)-18[59-76], β-Asp65-PIP[59-67], D-Ala66-PNT.II, and D60,65E-PIP[59-67] displayed the most potent bactericidal activity agains

Our objective was to evaluate diagnostic tools for the detection of Inclusion Body Disease (IBD) in bold snakes. The aetiology of IBD is unknown, and the disease has non-specific clinical signs, hence there is a need for a clinically-applicable, specific diagnostic method. We examined blood smears and liver biopsies from 26 bold snakes (17 boas and nine pythons; some of which were suspected of having IBD) for the presence of characteristic inclusion bodies. We used haematology, histology and electron microscopy to characterise samples as IBD-positive or -negative. Our results indicate that exa

The invasive Burmese python (Python bivittatus) is an optimal sentinel to monitor the presence and impact of chemicals of emerging concern in the Florida Everglades, a designated World Heritage Site. As a relatively long-lived apex predator, that is both a generalist and a holophagous consumer of prey, python tissue burdens can highlight the bioaccumulative potential of pollutants, reflecting what is present in the ecosystem. Further, as these invasive snakes are targeted for removal by the state, opportunistic sampling of this semi-aquatic apex predator reduces the need for handling of vulner

Invasive species present substantial challenges to biodiversity conservation, particularly when low detectability and demographic heterogeneity obscure the population-level consequences of management actions. Invasive Burmese pythons (Python bivittatus) in South Florida exemplify this challenge, as metrics based on raw removals or body size alone may not reflect demographic impacts. To address this, we introduce the Weighted Removal Index (WRI), a demographic weighting framework that prioritizes removals based on expected contributions to survival and reproduction. Using survey data from the S

Feeding is associated with large increases in metabolism (Specific Dynamic Action of food; SDA response) and rapid growth of many visceral organs in the Burmese python (Python bivittatus). Both magnitude and duration of the SDA response increases with meal size, which has been attributed to the extra digestive workload with increasing meal size. However, recent data shows a large increase in postprandial protein synthesis, which aligns with the high growth-efficiency of pythons, suggesting that postprandial protein synthesis is involved in tissue remodelling and plays a pivotal role in the SDA

Candida haemulonii is an emergent infectious pathogen that affects human presenting comorbidities and/or immunodepression. Little is known about other possible hosts. For the first time, this fungus was found causing a cutaneous infection in a snake, Boa constrictor, characterized by scale opacity and several ulcerative lesions. This C. haemulonii was isolated, identified using molecular techniques and a phylogenetic study, and had its growth totally inhibited by all the drugs tested; however, no fungicide effect was seen for fluconazole and itraconazole. The B. constrictor clinical signals su

Reptile-associated nidoviruses (serpentoviruses) have been reported to cause proliferative interstitial pneumonia in pythons and other reptile species. A captive, younger than 2 years old, intact female ball python (Python regius) showed increased oral mucus, wheezing, and audible breathing with weight loss. Gross and microscopic examination revealed large amounts of mucus in the esophagus and proliferative interstitial pneumonia. Serpentovirus genes were detected from the lung tissues by polymerase chain reaction. The current serpentoviruses was phylogenetically grouped with the serpentovirus

BACKGROUND: Species of the genus Borrelia are causative agents of Lyme disease and relapsing fever. Lyme disease is the most commonly reported vector-borne disease in the northern hemisphere. However, in some parts of the world Lyme borreliosis and relapsing fever may be caused by novel Borrelia genotypes. Herein, we report the presence of a Borrelia sp. in an Amblyomma varanense collected from Python reticulatus.
METHODS: Ticks were collected from snakes, identified to species level and examined by PCR for the presence of Borrelia spp. flaB and 16S rRNA genes. Phylogenetic trees were constru

Canonical models of intestinal regeneration emphasize the critical role of the crypt stem cell niche to generate enterocytes that migrate to villus ends. Burmese pythons possess extreme intestinal regenerative capacity yet lack crypts, thus providing opportunities to identify noncanonical but potentially conserved mechanisms that expand our understanding of regenerative capacity in vertebrates, including humans. Here, we leverage single-nucleus RNA sequencing of fasted and postprandial python small intestine to identify the signaling pathways and cell-cell interactions underlying the python's

Rotator cuff repair surgeries fail frequently, with 20 to 94% of the 600,000 repairs performed annually in the United States resulting in retearing of the rotator cuff. The most common cause of failure is sutures tearing through tendons at grasping points. To address this issue, we drew inspiration from the specialized teeth of snakes of the Pythonoidea superfamily, which grasp soft tissues without tearing. To apply this nondamaging gripping approach to the surgical repair of tendon, we developed and optimized a python tooth-inspired device as an adjunct to current rotator cuff suture repair a

Constricting pythons, known for their ability to consume infrequent, massive meals, exhibit rapid and reversible cardiac hypertrophy following feeding. Our primary goal was to investigate how python hearts achieve this adaptive response after feeding. Isolated myofibrils increased force after feeding without changes in sarcomere ultrastructure and without increasing energy cost. Ca2+ transients were prolonged after feeding with no changes in myofibril Ca2+ sensitivity. Feeding reduced titin-based tension, resulting in decreased cardiac tissue stiffness. Feeding also reduced the activity of sir

The embryonic development of many ectothermic species are highly sensitive to temperature and typically have a higher thermal optima than do most other physiological processes. Thus, female ectotherms often maintain a higher and more carefully controlled body temperature when she is supporting developing embryos (early development in oviparous species, throughout development in viviparous species). Considering the positive correlation between body temperature and evaporative water loss, this response could potentially exacerbate female water imbalance in water-limited environments, suggesting

Oral inoculations of 9 litter-groups of 3 5-day-old suckling BALB/c mouse pups (Mus musculus) with 6.7 x 10(3) to 1.2 x 10(5) per pup of viable, Cryptosporidium serpentis oocysts from snakes resulted in no transmission. Mice showed normal development; the litter-group weight gain was not altered significantly (P > 0.05) relative to the total number of C. serpentis oocysts inoculated or to the initial group weight (P > 0.05). Histological sections of stomach, duodenum, jejunum, ileum, cecum, and colon 4 days postinoculation did not contain life-cycle stages of Cryptosporidium in any inoculated

Cardiomyocyte hyperplasia is the primary form of fetal heart growth, whereas this proliferative capacity is largely lost in adults across most mammalian species. The limited ability of adult cardiomyocytes to re-enter the cell cycle is a major cause of cardiac injury-induced morbidity and mortality. Here, we report that postprandial Burmese python cardiomyocytes activate cell cycle re-entry to promote persistent cardiac growth. Burmese pythons normally eat large meals infrequently, resulting in reversible cardiomyocyte hypertrophy. We found that frequent feeding of large meals amplifies the mo

Multidrug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, including MRSA (methicillin-resistant) and VRSA (vancomycin-resistant), causes serious healthcare-associated infections, even sepsis and death. Here, we identified six novel cathelicidins (CATHPb1-6) from Python bivittatu, and CATHPb1 displayed the best in vitro pharmacological and toxicological profile. We further show that CATHPb1 exhibited evident protection in mice MRSA/VRSA infection models, given either 24 h before or 4 h after infection. The protection was all effective through different administration routes, but was blocked by in vivo depleti

UNLABELLED: This study was aimed at evaluating the oral bacterial flora of 60 Python regius kept as pets by culture and biochemical methods. All isolates were also submitted to antimicrobial susceptibility testing using the disc diffusion method. The oral cavity of snakes sampled harboured a wide range of Gram-negative bacteria mainly constituted by Pseudomonas spp., Morganella morganii, Acinetobacter calcoaceticus, Aeromonas hydrophila, but also by Salmonella spp. Staphylococcus spp. was the commonest Gram-positive isolates, and various anaerobic Clostridium species were also found. The most
