Testing umbilical cords for funisitis due to Treponema pallidum infection, Bolivia.

To establish the frequency of necrotizing funisitis in congenital syphilis, we conducted a prospective descriptive study of maternal syphilis in Bolivia by testing 1,559 women at delivery with rapid plasma reagin (RPR). We examined umbilical cords of 66 infants whose mothers had positive RPR and fluorescent treponemal antibody absorption tests. Histologic abnormalities were detected in 28 (42%) umbilical cords (seven [11%] had necrotizing funisitis with spirochetes; three [4%] had marked funisitis without necrosis; and 18 [27%] had mild funisitis), and 38 [58%] were normal. Of 22 umbilical cor

Emergence of dengue at high altitude: characterization of the 2024 outbreak in Cochabamba, Bolivia.

Dengue virus (DENV) transmission in Bolivia has historically been restricted to tropical lowland regions, where the primary vector Ae. aegypti is endemic. In recent years, however, the vector has expanded into high-altitude areas. In 2024, Cochabamba, located at ~ 2,550 m above sea level, experienced its largest recorded dengue outbreak. We analyzed data from 9,576 suspected dengue cases reported between January and July 2024, of which 5,923 were laboratory-confirmed. A subset of DENV-positive samples underwent whole-genome sequencing and phylogenetic analysis. Dengue cases were detected in mu

Genomic characterization, origin, and local transmission of Oropouche virus in Bolivia in 2024.

BACKGROUND: The Oropouche virus (OROV) is an arthropod-borne virus that causes an acute febrile illness, like other arboviral diseases. In 2024, Oropouche cases sharply increased in several countries of the Americas, including Bolivia. Here, we investigate the origin and spread of OROV in the Bolivian Amazon region. METHODS: Full-length OROV genomes from 34 positive samples collected in the three affected Bolivian departments during the 2024 outbreak were sequenced using an amplicon-based approach. Maximum Likelihood (ML) phylogenetic analyses of separate viral segments were conducted to iden

Genetic diversity of HBV in indigenous populations on the border between Brazil and Bolivia.

Hepatitis B is considered an important public health problem worldwide because it is a chronic infection with a risk factor for cirrhosis and cellular hepatocellular carcinoma. In Brazil, the Rondônia State ranks first in the Northern region regarding the number of deaths due to hepatitis B. In the Amazon basin, genotype F is considered specific to the Americas identified in native populations. But few data on HBV genotyping and phylogenetic analysis are available. The objective of this study was to evaluate the genotypes and subgenotypes of the hepatitis B virus in indigenous people chronic c

Cyberaggression in Adolescents of Bolivia: Connection with Psychopathological Symptoms, Adaptive and Predictor Variables.

Concern about the increase of cyberbullying underlies this study, which had four objectives: (1) to calculate the prevalence of cyberaggressors; (2) to compare non-cyberaggressors with cyberaggressors in other bullying/cyberbullying roles, in psychopathological symptoms, and in self-image of masculinity/femininity, happiness, and empathy; (3) to analyze whether cyberaggressors consulted with a psychologist more than non-cyberaggressors; and (4) to identify predictor variables of cyberaggression. Participants were 1558 Bolivian students aged 13 to 17 years. Seven evaluation instruments were adm

Characterization of digestive disorders of patients with chronic Chagas disease in Cochabamba, Bolivia.

BACKGROUND: Chagas disease (CD) is endemic in Latin America and particularly common in Bolivia, but there is little information on the characteristics of chronic digestive involvement. OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence and characterize digestive manifestations in chronic CD patients in Cochabamba, Bolivia. METHODS: Eighty-five T. cruzi-seropositive individuals with or without digestive symptoms (G1 group), and fifteen T. cruzi-seronegative patients with similar digestive symptoms to those seen in CD (G2 group) were included in the study. All patients underwent a detailed history includ

Miltefosine Combined with Intralesional Pentamidine for Leishmania braziliensis Cutaneous Leishmaniasis in Bolivia.

Bolivian cutaneous leishmaniasis due to Leishmania braziliensis was treated with the combination of miltefosine (150 mg/day for 28 days) plus intralesional pentamidine (120 μg/mm2 lesion area on days 1, 3, and 5). Ninety-two per cent of 50 patients cured. Comparison to historic controls at our site suggests that the efficacy of the two drugs was additive. Adverse effects and cost were also additive. This combination may be attractive when a prime consideration is efficacy (e.g., in rescue therapy), avoidance of parenteral therapy, or the desire to treat locally and also provide systemic protec

Prevalence and correlates of physical, psychological, and sexual intimate partner violence in Bolivia.

Despite increasing awareness that domestic violence is a major public health problem, existing studies focus on physical and sexual violence and give little attention to psychological violence. This study uses data from the 2008 Bolivia Demographic and Health Surveys (BDHS) to examine the prevalence and correlates of physical, sexual, and psychological intimate partner violence in Bolivia. The results show that psychological intimate partner violence is extremely common (affecting nearly one in two women) and often occurs in addition to physical violence. While physical, psychological and sexu

Active surveillance of American tegumentary leishmaniasis in endemic areas in rural Bolivia.

INTRODUCTION: American tegumentary leishmaniasis (ATL), including mucocutaneous leishmaniasis (MCL) and localized cutaneous leishmaniasis (LCL), is endemic in Bolivia. We describe the results of active surveillance of ATL from 2001 to 2006 and assess demographic data related to ATL epidemiology in the Yungas valleys. METHODS: Community-based active ATL surveillance was performed by the institutions SERVIR, CÁRITAS, and the Health Services Department of La Paz, whose files were reviewed retrospectively. A cross-sectional survey was carried out to assess demographic data in two communities. RE

Sarcoptic mange in free-ranging pampas foxes in the Gran Chaco, Bolivia.

Sarcoptes scabiei infestation was diagnosed in two freshly dead free-ranging pampas foxes (Pseudalopex gymnocercus) in the Gran Chaco, Bolivia. Diagnosis was made based on histologic evaluation of skin biopsies and identification of the parasite from skin scrapings. Characteristic gross lesions consistent with mange were noted in 19 of 94 observations of free-ranging pampas foxes in the region from December 1998 to January 2000. None of 16 crab-eating foxes (Cerdocyon thous) observed during the same time period had visible lesions consistent with scabies. These are the first case reports of S.

Lifetime prevalence of Bell's palsy in rural Bolivia: a door-to-door survey.

We carried out a door-to-door survey in rural areas of the Cordillera Province, Bolivia, to determine the prevalence of the most common neurological diseases in a sample of about 10,000 inhabitants. A team of non-doctor health workers administered a standard screening instrument for neurological diseases, a slightly modified version of the World Health Organization protocol. All subjects found positive at the screening phase underwent a complete neurological examination. On screening, we found 1,130 positive subjects, of whom 909 were aged 15 years and above. After the neurological examination

[Prevalence of infections by hepatitis B, C, D and E viruses in Bolivia].

In Bolivia, no studies have been carried out specifically on hepatitis viruses. Thus, their prevalence and circulation patterns are virtually unknown. A seroepidemiologic study was performed from 1992 to 1996 to generate a preliminary idea of the overall prevalence of infection from hepatitis B, C, D, and E viruses (HBV, HCV, HDV, and HEV, respectively) in different Bolivian population groups. Prompted by the data obtained in other areas of Latin America, the study focused on indigenous communities in the Amazon region. In rural areas of the high Andean plateau, HBV infection showed an overall

[Antibodies against Trichinella spiralis in the rural population of the Province of Cordillera, Bolivia].

A seroepidemiological study was conducted to determine the prevalence of antibodies to Trichinella spiralis among rural residents of Cordillera province, Santa Cruz Department, Bolivia. Using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), 234 serum samples were examined, and antibodies were detected in seven of the samples (3%). The results document for the first time the presence of human infestation with Trichinella in Bolivia and suggest the need to strengthen trichinelosis surveillance in the municipal slaughterhouses, to prevent the clandestine slaughter of animals, and particularly to en

Mansonella ozzardi infection in Bolivia: prevalence and clinical associations in the Chaco region.

A cross-sectional survey carried out in the Chaco region of Bolivia showed that 26% (77 of 296) and 0.7% (2 of 298) of the rural population of the Camiri and Villa Montes areas, respectively, harbored Mansonella ozzardi microfilariae (mf). No significant differences were observed between sexes. The lowest prevalence (9%) was in the 0-14-year-old age group, with no children <11 months of age infected. The prevalence increased sharply in the 25-34-year-old age group (32%), and continued increasing in the older age classes. Microfilaremia, ranging from 1 to 305 mf/20 microl of blood, was lowest i
