Cord Blood (CB) is a unique and readily available source of hematopoietic stem cells for transplantation. CB also contains other types of stem cells, including endothelial stem cells and mesenchymal stem cells, that may prove useful in non-traditional clinical uses. Genetic and molecular analyses have demonstrated that CB stem cells lie somewhere between mature stem cells like those found in Bone Marrow (BM), and fetal stem cells. After 25 years of clinical experience, CB is now used in the same fashion as BM for all typical malignant and genetic diseases treated by bone marrow transplant. Due

Midwifes are the ones in charge of the procedure to obtain a blood donation from the umbilical cord, a procedure which consists of informing mothers what the advantages and inconveniences of such a donation are, filling out the file for the blood bank, extracting the blood donation, and completing the patient's records for the pediatrician. In Spain, the Spanish Register of Bone Marrow Donors (REDMO in Spanish acronym) is the organization in charge of internal coordination and in conjunction with other countries, the bone marrow and umbilical cord blood donations. BACKGROUND AND AIM: Conventional banking of bone allografts has been well documented in the literature. It relies on standardised screening and providing a sterile storage facility. We report a new surgical technique of banking the femoral head in a surgically fashioned subperiosteal iliac pouch and its use for the donor's own surgery.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirteen patients with an average age of 60 years and a diagnosis of osteoarthritis of the hip with a contralateral symptomatic loose hip replacement were selected. The femoral head was harvested and banked. On retrieval, histological anal

BACKGROUND: Extensive injuries involving the thenar region and traumatic thumb amputation, with or without involvement of additional digits, present complex reconstructive challenges. In cases where the severed thumb remains anatomically intact, immediate replantation or ectopic replantation using another digit may not be feasible. Following debridement and closure of the thenar region, the absence of the thumb can significantly compromise hand function. Reconstruction using the autologous intact severed thumb, along with detached metacarpal and phalangeal bones preserved within healthy tissue

Fifty-eight patients who had scoliosis or kyphosis of varying etiologies were followed for a minimum of two years (average, forty-four months) after segmental spinal instrumentation using sublaminar wires. In eight (19 per cent) of the patients who had been operated on for scoliosis one or both rods broke. The average time that had elapsed before the breakage was discovered was twenty-three months. None of the patients in whom a rod had broken had had postoperative immobilization or a first-stage anterior fusion, and only one had had supplementary grafting with banked bone. Instrumentation to

Big craniofacial resections for highly invasive malignant neoplasm, including skull base and maxillary bones, always represent a difficult chance for the reconstructive surgeon. In these cases it is not easy to restore anatomy and function simultaneously even adopting complex microsurgical techniques. In maxillofacial and oral surgery, simple bone homotransplantation for small bone segments reconstruction has been developing as popular technique and tissue banks offer not only bone segments but also many different tissues including complex body parts. In this paper we present, a case report of

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal tissue allotransplantation has been used as a standard approach for reconstructive surgery. The present study has reviewed the banking of musculoskeletal tissue at the Perth Bone and Tissue Bank (PBTB) and provided evidence of quality assurance on musculoskeletal tissue allotransplantation.
METHODS: All donor tissues were processed in accordance with the Therapeutic Goods Administration's relevant codes of good manufacturing practices. Microbiological monitoring at each step of manufacture and postoperative surveying of the musculoskeletal allotransplantations were

Cord blood (CB) is a source of transplantable hematopoietic progenitor cells (HPC); it represents an alternative to bone marrow to restore hematopoiesis in patients affected by malignant and non-malignant disease. Therefore, large-scale CB banks would be a natural complement to bone marrow donor registries. Storage of unmanipulated whole CB units requires a great number of liquid nitrogen containers. Separation of leukocytes allows CB storage in smaller space, thus lowering banking costs; unfortunately, CB processing may cause significant losses of stem/progenitor cells. We describe here a pro

The wealth of allogeneic and xenogeneic tissue products available to plastic and reconstructive surgeons has allowed for the development of novel surgical solutions to challenging clinical problems, often obviating the need to inflict donor site morbidity. Allogeneic tissue used for reconstructive surgery enters the tissue industry through whole body donation or reproductive tissue donation and has been regulated by the FDA as human cells, tissues, and cellular and tissue-based products (HCT/Ps) since 1997. Tissue banks offering allogeneic tissue can also undergo voluntary regulation by the Am

Obtaining stable bone-implant interface, correct alignment of the components, proper balance of soft tissues' tension, maintenance of proper joint interline are fundamental principles for success in surgical revision total knee arthroplasty, which are only obtained with management bone deficiency. However, proper treatment of large defects remains unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical and radiographic results of patients that had underwent revision surgery for total knee arthroplasty with use of structural grafts of musculoskeletal tissue bank in the period between Januar

Thumb reconstruction has been a very challenging issue for hand surgeons. In this report, we present a case of thumb reconstruction with combination of the wrap-around flap prefabricated by the medialis pedis perforator flap with phalanx and nail bed banked from the amputated thumb. A 22-year-old man suffered from the left thumb amputation as well as large soft tissue defect of hand and comminuted fracture in wrist due to a crush accident. The distal phalanx and nail bed of left thumb were exposed and no suitable vessels for microsurgical anastomosis could be found, resulting in the great diff

Samples of demineralized bone matrix (DBM) were exposed to graduated doses of radiation (1-15 Megarad) (Mrad) utilizing a linear accelerator and then implanted into the thoracic region of Long-Evans rats. Subcutaneous implantation of DBM into allogenic rats induces endochondral bone. In response to matrix implantation, a cascade of events ensues; mesenchymal cell proliferation on day 3 postimplantation, chondrogenesis on day 7, calcification of the cartilagenous matrix and chondrolysis on day 9, and osteogenesis on day 11 resulting in formation of an ossicle containing active hemopoietic tissu

Transplantation and gene therapy offer the hope of treating thousands of individuals with various malignancies and genetic disorders. However, if this approach is to become a reality, there must be readily available sources of suitable HLA-A typed stem cells. Cord blood has been demonstrated to be a suitable source of hematopoietic stem cells that can be used in place of bone marrow stem cells for transplant. However, to implement the widespread clinical use of cord blood, it is necessary to establish both autologous and allogeneic cord blood banks from which stem cell specimens can be obtaine

Five patients developed symptoms of Raynaud's phenomenon and upper extremity paresthesias after 7-32 months of exposure to air-powered surgical instruments used for the harvest of bone for bone banks. Results of cold challenge plethysmography, nerve conduction studies, vibrotactile thresholds, and quantitative sensory testing were as follows: all patients had significant reproducible vasospasm with nondetectable finger systolic blood pressure (FSBP = 0) after local digital cooling; nerve conduction abnormalities included delayed median nerve sensory conduction (< 48 m/s) across 5 of 10 wrists;

We report a case of human skeletal remains in which a mandibular static bone cavity noted in a dental orthopantomogram assisted the positive identification. Unknown totally skeletonized human remains were found on a bushy slope of a hill. In the pockets of the clothing, there were a wooden seal, on which a family name was inscribed, and two cigarette lighters bearing the name of a bank. The body was identified as a male, about 50 years old. The estimated time elapsed since death was about six months to one year. No evidence of trauma was found in the clothing and the bones. The possible cause

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Adequate treatment of forearm nonunion should achieve both biological stimulation of the bone and mechanical stability. The use of bone graft could enhance the healing of a nonunion providing osteogenic, osteoconductive and osteoinductive stimulation and an optimal stability of the fixation. We retrospectively reviewed two cohorts of patients affected by forearm nonunion and treated with plate and opposite bone graft to determine whether the use of autograft versus allograft differs in terms of (1) rate of healing of the nonunion and (2) time of healing.

The search for the perfect bone graft material is an important topic in material science and medicine. Despite human bone being the ideal material, due to its composition, morphology, and familiarity with cells, autografts are widely considered demanding and cause additional stress to the patient because of bone harvesting. However, human bone from tissue banks can be used to prepare materials in eligible form for transplantation. Without proteins and fats, the bone becomes a non-immunogenic matrix for human cells to repopulate in the place of implantation. To repair bone losses, the granulate

PURPOSE: The use of bone and connective tissue allografts has grown rapidly and surpassed the use of autografts in many countries. Being of human origin, bone and tendon allografts carry the risk of disease transmission and complications have been reported. As part of the Project NOTIFY led by the World Health Organisation, an effort to improve recognition, reporting, tracking and investigation of adverse outcomes of allografts was initiated, achieving a comprehensive review of associated disease transmission and failures. Those involving the use of musculoskeletal allografts are reported here

The allogenic transplantation of hemopoietic stem cell from bone marrow and peripheral blood is limited due to the necessity to identify HLA matched donor within the family or in bone marrow donor registries. Although, more than 10 million donors are available worldwide, completely HLA matched donors could be found only for 75% of the patients. It is well known that transplantations of hematopoietic stem cell from cord blood are characterized with a lower risk of GvHD and therefore do not require so strict criteria for HLA matching, and less time for search of matched donor is needed. The nece
