Bone turnover and hip bone mineral density in patients with sarcoidosis.

BACKGROUND AND AIM OF THE WORK: Sarcoidosis is a chronic inflammatory T-cell-driven disease that can also affect bone. We evaluated bone remodelling and bone mineral density (BMD) in patients with sarcoidosis and their dependency of disease-related and treatment-related factors. METHODS: In 124 patients BMD of the hip (DXA) and markers of bone resorption (ICTP) and formation (PINP) were evaluated. Furthermore a lateral DXA of the spine for morphometric assessment of vertebral deformities was performed in 87 patients. Potential predictors of bone markers, BMD and determinants of prevalent vert

Bone mineral density and bone turnover in hyperprolactinaemia of various origins.

INTRODUCTION: Osteopenia and osteoporosis because of hyperprolactinaemia caused by prolactinoma may be followed by an increased risk of fracture. There are no data on the bone effects of functional hyperprolactinaemia. The aim was to assess the influence of hyperprolactinaemia of various origins on bone turnover and density in different skeletal sites. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was carried out in 75 women (aged 30.53 +/- 7.8): Group I--32 women with prolactinoma and Group II--43 women with functional hyperprolactinaemia. Both groups of patients were subdivided into those with hypogonadi

Bone mineral density and bone turnover in patients with Bartter syndrome.

The aim of this investigation was to evaluate bone mineral density (BMD), by use of DXA, and bone turnover, in patients with Bartter syndrome (BS). Ten patients (2 with BS type II and 8 with BS type III) were included in the procedure. Age at study varied between 2 and 30 years. During the studies usual treatment with indomethacin, spironolactone, and potassium chloride was maintained. Results were compared with those obtained in the 20 asymptomatic parents. Height of the patients at the time of the study did not differ from reference values (Z-score -1.2 to +0.8). Three patients (1 with BS ty

Bone density estimation using tissue heat capacity.

Osteoporosis onset is relatively asymptomatic, the condition often being identified only once a significant fracture occurs, leading to a potentially serious prognosis. Currently, early identification of osteoporosis is complicated by the difficulty in measuring bone density without using x-ray absorptiometry or quantitative ultrasound, so a simpler method for estimating bone density is needed. Given that bone is reported to have a lower specific heat than other tissues, we investigated the possibility of estimating bone density using this difference in tissue thermal properties. The tibia med

Spatial mapping of humeral head bone density.

BACKGROUND: Short-stem humeral replacements achieve fixation by anchoring to the metaphyseal trabecular bone. Fixing the implant in high-density bone can provide strong fixation and reduce the risk of loosening. However, there is a lack of data mapping the bone density distribution in the proximal humerus. The aim of the study was to investigate the bone density in proximal humerus. METHODS: Eight computed tomography scans of healthy cadaveric humeri were used to map bone density distribution in the humeral head. The proximal humeral head was divided into 12 slices parallel to the humeral ana

Bone mineral density in familial partial lipodystrophy.

OBJECTIVE: Type 1 and type 2 familial partial lipodystrophies (FPLD) are characterized by the loss or increase in subcutaneous fat in certain body regions, as well as metabolic disorders. Higher muscle volume and mass have also been described. However, so far, possible bone involvement has not been studied. The aim of this study was to evaluate bone mineral density (BMD) in patients with type 1 and type 2 FPLD. METHODS: A total of 143 women were selected and distributed into three groups (17 women with FPLD2, 82 women with FPLD1 and 44 nonlipodystrophic obese female controls). A thorough hist

Decreased bone mineral density in Costello syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Costello syndrome (CS) is a multisystemic disorder characterized by postnatal reduced growth, facial dysmorphism, cardiac defects, cognitive impairment, skin and musculo-skeletal anomalies, and predisposition to certain cancers. CS is caused by activating germline mutations in the HRAS proto-oncogene. Similar to what is observed in other RASopathies, CS causative HRAS mutations promote enhanced signal flow through the RAF-MEK-ERK and PI3K-AKT signaling cascades. While decreased bone mineralization has been documented in other RASopathies, such as neurofibromatosis type 1 and Noon

Decreased bone mineral density and periodontal management.

The definition of osteoporosis has evolved beyond low bone mineral density to include impaired bone morphology and matrix properties. As such, the subsequent bone density insufficiencies extend beyond the skeletal risks of fracture and have implications for oral health management patients. As our population ages there is a worldwide increase in the risk of decreased bone mineral density and its subsequent morbidity. This makes age an independent risk factor for fracture and decreased bone mineral density. Multiple examinations and diagnostic tests are currently used in combination to develop a

Bone mineral density and depot medroxyprogesterone acetate.

INTRODUCTION: Depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) suppresses pituitary gonadotrophin output, thus, suppressing ovulation. Estrogen production from the ovary is also strongly inhibited, and the resulting estrogen deficiency has a detrimental impact on bone. Depot medroxyprogesterone acetate may be particularly detrimental in young women, as it may impede attainment of peak bone mass, and switching to a different contraceptive is recommended. However, the effect of sequential use of DMPA with other contraceptives in this age group has not been investigated. METHODS: This was a cross-sectio

Bone age, mineral density, and fatigue damage.

The most plausible purpose for bone remodeling is to prevent excessive aging of bone, which can cause osteocyte death and increase susceptibility to fatigue microdamage. The age of any particular volume of bone depends on two factors: the probability of remodeling beginning on the nearest bone surface, which is given by the local activation frequency; and the probability of a particular remodeling event penetrating to a specified distance from the surface. These two probabilities can be combined in a mathematical model. According to the model, within about 40 microns from the surface, the rate

Bone mineral density and thyroid hormone therapy.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate prospectively the evolution of femoral and vertebral bone mineral density (BMD) in hypothyroid subjects treated with replacement doses (mean +/- SD dose of L-thyroxine = 135 +/- 32 micrograms/day) as compared to an untreated group. Vertebral bone density was also measured in other patients who had been treated for at least 2 years with either suppressive (mean dose = 154 +/- 36 micrograms/day, n = 28) or replacement doses (mean dose = 104 +/- 52 micrograms/day, n = 21) according to the thyrotrophin response (TSH) to the thyrotrophin releasing hormone (

Evaluation of bone mineral density and bone turnover in children on anticoagulation.

BACKGROUND: Childhood and adolescence are critical periods of bone mineral acquisition. Children on anticoagulation (AC) might have an increased risk for reduced bone mineral density (BMD). Risk factors for impaired bone accumulation include chronic diseases, immobility, and medication. Vitamin K (VK) deficiency reflected by undercarboxylated osteocalcin levels (ucOC) has been identified as a predictor of osteoporosis and fractures. Data on bone health in children under AC are sparse. AIMS: To evaluate BMD in children on AC and characterize the risk factors of low BMD, including VK and Vitami
