Post-pregnancy osteoporosis is a rare condition with little known pathophysiology. Most cases are diagnosed in the late stage of pregnancy or in the post partum while breastfeeding, particularly in first pregnancy. Non-traumatic vertebral fragility fractures are most commonly observed and characterized by prolonged severe pain and functional limitations. Conventional radiography will confirm the fracture in most cases, and magnetic resonance, which can be safely used during pregnancy, is effective in detecting vertebral fractures and bone marrow edema. It is important to exclude secondary oste

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) affects a large proportion of infants, particularly in underdeveloped countries. Among the main causes of IUGR, maternal endocrine-metabolic dysfunction is highlighted, either due to its high incidence or due to the severity of the immediate and mediated changes that these dysfunctions cause in the fetus and the mother. Although the effects of endocrine and metabolic disorders have been widely researched, there are still no reviews that bring together and summarize the effects of these conditions on bone development in cases of IUGR. Therefore, the presen

Bone serves not only as a locomotive organ but also as an organ instrumental in many other functions such as hematopoiesis. To this end, bone undergoes renewal by sequential resorption and formation. Bone resorption and formation are regulated by many systems including the endocrine, the nervous and the immune systems. The skeletal and the immune systems are closely related because they share many regulatory molecules such as cytokines and transcription factors. Studies on such shared molecules and inflammatory bone destruction in rheumatoid arthritis have fostered a novel interdisciplinary fi

When present at diagnosis or when developing in the course of disease, the presence of bone metastases from prostate cancer is generally considered an indication to begin endocrine therapy, as this is clearly the most effective form of treatment for this problem. Endocrine therapy can stop progression of prostate cancer in 80-85% of cases. Endocrine therapy can relieve pain, prevent pathologic fractures, and prevent neurologic complications from bone metastases from prostate cancer. Rarely, bone scans may become normal after the start of endocrine therapy, but partial improvement or stabilizat

In 100 patients with various types of endocrine dysfunction, we measured bone mineral density (BMD) at the midradius (greater than 95% cortical bone) and distal radius (75% cortical and 25% trabecular bone) by single photon absorptiometry and at the lumbar spine (greater than 66% trabecular bone) using the new technique of dual photon absorptiometry. BMD in each endocrine disorder deviated in at least one site from the sex-specific age regression of 187 normal subjects. For patients with primary hyperparathyroidism, hypercortisolism, and hyperthyroidism this deviation was negative (suggesting

BACKGROUND: Obesity, bone-related and cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are among the leading global health concerns. Growing evidence suggests that these conditions share common pathophysiological pathways and disease outcomes. PATHOGENETIC INTERACTIONS OF OBESITY, CVD AND BONE-RELATED DISEASES: Obesity is a well-established risk factor for atherosclerotic CVD (ASCVD), as dysfunctional ectopic adipose tissue may produce endocrine/paracrine hormones modulating metabolic processes and inflammation, predisposing to ASCVD. Although obesityhas been considered a protective factor for bone loss, it may

Osteoporosis, arthritis, and periodontal disease are common diseases of the skeleton, all of which could benefit from new therapeutic strategies, including targeted drug delivery. While bone is a rigid structure, it is not inert, with the cells of the skeleton being able to repair damage and respond to alterations in mechanical stimuli and various endocrine agents. Several important factors related to bone physiology that could influence the success of a pharmacological treatment include heterogeneity in bone remodeling activities throughout the skeleton, differences in blood supply and local

Coeliac disease (CD) is a permanent intolerance to gluten that results in damage of the small intestinal mucosa, and it is one of the common causes of chronic malabsorption in children. It is well known that patients with CD are at great risk of malignant complications, but in patients with CD many other disorders have been recognized. Autoimmunity diseases, such as type 1 diabetes mellitus, thyroid diseases, and autoimmune polyglandular syndromes are known to be associated with CD, and they seem to be related to gluten exposure. Growth, bone metabolism, and fertility can be affected in patien

Hepatocrinology explores the intricate relationship between liver function and the endocrine system. Chronic liver diseases such as liver cirrhosis can cause endocrine disorders due to toxin accumulation and protein synthesis disruption. Despite its importance, assessing endocrine issues in cirrhotic patients is frequently neglected. This article provides a comprehensive review of the epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of endocrine disturbances in liver cirrhosis. The review was conducted using the PubMed/Medline, EMBASE, and Scielo databases, encompassing 172 articles. Li

Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is characterized most commonly now as an asymptomatic disorder with hypercalcaemia and elevated levels of parathyroid hormone (PTH). The elevation in PTH is detected by both the standard immunoradiometric assays (IRMA) and a more recent IRMA that detects only the 1-84 full-length PTH molecule. The serum calcium concentration is usually <1 mg dL(-1) above normal. Recently, another variant of PHPT (normocalcaemic PHPT) has been described in which the serum calcium is normal but the serum PTH is elevated, in the absence of any secondary cause for PTH elevation.

Endocrine disease in exotic species is less common than in small animals. Nevertheless, the diagnostic principles used in small animals can be adapted to evaluate endocrine disease in many of the exotic species although species-specific aspects need to be considered. This article covers important diseases such as thyroid dysfunction in reptiles and birds, hyperthyroidism in guinea pigs, and hyperadrenocorticism in ferrets. Glucose metabolism in neoplasms affecting normal physiology, such as insulinoma in ferrets and gastric neuroendocrine carcinoma in bearded dragons, is discussed. Calcium abn

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a condition of severe undernutrition associated with adaptive changes in many endocrine axes. These changes include hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, acquired growth hormone resistance with low insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) levels, hypercortisolemia, altered secretion of adipokines and appetite-regulating hormones, and low bone mineral density (BMD). Bone health is impaired subsequent to a low body mass index, decreased lean mass, and the endocrine changes described above. In addition to low areal BMD, AN is characterized by a decrease in volumetric BMD, changes in

The fracture risks are increased in patients with lifestyle-related diseases such as diabetes mellitus and dyslipidemia. Bone has been recognized as an endocrine organ to regulate glucose and fat metabolism. Hyperglycemia, advanced glycation end products (AGEs) , and insulin signal are involved in diabetes-related bone disease. Previous studies suggest that hypercholesterolemia may increase the risk of fractures. Adipokines such as leptin and adiponectin derived from fat tissue, which are important regulators for glucose and lipid metabolism, regulate bone metabolism. On the other hand, it has

Both of genetic backgrounds and life-style are involved in pathogenesis of diabetes mellitus and osteoporosis. Nowadays they are common diseases in the elderly people in the developed countries. Quality of life in people who have diabetes and osteoporosis are frequently impaired. Thus, adequate care and treatment are needed for both diseases. Bone metabolism is regulated by complicated mechanisms that involve mineral metabolism and endocrine systems. Recent studies have shown that sympathetic nerve system, glucose and lipid metabolism are also involved in bone remodeling. Clinical studies have

Secondary osteoporosis is caused by various disorders, metabolic derangements, and drug administration, whose elimination as a cause for osteoporosis is necessary before establishing the diagnosis of primary osteoporosis. The underlying diseases or conditions are diversified, including those related to endocrine, nutrition, rheumatism, immobility, medicine, hematology, and congenital one. Among them, osteoporosis induced by steroid administration and that accompanied by diabetes mellitus are most frequently observed. They exhibit high fracture risks based on deteriorated bone quality rather th

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin and a steroid hormone that plays a central role in maintaining calcium-phosphorus and bone homeostasis in close interaction with parathyroid hormone, acting on its classical target tissues, namely, bone, kidney, intestine, and parathyroid glands. However, vitamin D endocrine system regulates several genes (about 3 % of the human genome) involved in cell differentiation, cell-cycle control, and cell function and exerts noncalcemic/pleiotropic effects on extraskeletal target tissues, such as immune and cardiovascular system, pancreatic endocrine cells, muscle,

The molecular mechanisms causing heritable disorders of hypo- and hyperphosphatemia involving the osteocyte-derived hormone fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) and its co-receptor αKlotho (KL) have sprung new concepts underlying the endocrine control of phosphate and calcium (Ca), as well as the regulation of the active form of vitamin D, 1α,25-dihydroxy vitamin D3 (1,25D). These critical developments have proven important for the understanding and treatment of both rare, Mendelian diseases as well as for important implications for common disorders of blood phosphate excess and dysregulated 1,
