Treatment of Fracture-Related Infections with Bone Abscess Formation after K-Wire Fixation of Pediatric Distal Radius Fractures in Adolescents-A Report of Two Clinical Cases.

Closed reduction and K-wire fixation of displaced distal radius fractures in children and adolescents is an established and successful surgical procedure. Fracture-related infections after K-wire fixation are rare but can have significant consequences for the patient. There is a lack of literature on the treatment of K-wire-associated fracture-related infections in children and adolescents. Herein, we report two cases of fracture-related infection after initial closed reduction and Kirschner wire fixation in two adolescents. One 13-year-old boy and one 11-year-old girl were seen for fracture-r

Biomechanical effects of osteoplasty with or without Kirschner wire augmentation on long bone diaphyses undergoing bending stress: implications for percutaneous imaging-guided consolidation in cancer patients.

BackgroundOsteoplasty has been discouraged in long bones. However, despite a substantial lack of pre-clinical biomechanical tests, multiple clinical studies have implemented a wide range of techniques to optimise long bone osteoplasty. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the biomechanical properties of osteoplasty alone and in combination with Kirschner wires (K-wires) in a cadaveric human diaphyseal model undergoing 3-point bending stress.MethodsThirty unpaired human cadaveric hemi-tibia specimens were randomly assigned to receive no consolidation (group 1, n = 10), osteoplasty alone

Cervical kyphosis surgery using a cervical pedicle screw placed with a U-shaped wire that enables observation of the lateral edge of the cortical bone of the spinal canal: A case report and literature review.

RATIONALE: A cervical pedicle screw (CPS) serves as an important anchor for cervical surgeries. Its placement requires the development of a highly safe and easy-to-handle method. Considering that the lateral end of the cortical bone of the spinal canal (LE point) is the most crucial for CPS placement, we devised a U-shaped wire capable of identifying LE points under direct vision and reliably confirming the site with C-arm lateral fluoroscopy. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 65-year-old male, who had been aware of numbness in both hands, mild finger dexterity disorder, and gait disturbance for half a yea

Bioactivity and osteointegration of hydroxyapatite-coated stainless steel and titanium wires used for intramedullary osteosynthesis.

A lot of research was conducted on the use of various biomaterials in orthopedic surgery. Our study investigated the effects of nanostructured calcium-phosphate coating on metallic implants introduced into the bone marrow canal. Stainless steel or titanium 2-mm wires (groups 1 and 2, respectively), and hydroxyapatite-coated stainless steel or titanium wires of the same diameter (groups 3 and 4, respectively) were introduced into the tibial bone marrow canal of 20 dogs (each group = 5 dogs). Hydroxyapatite coating was deposited on the wires with the method of microarc oxidation. Light microscop

Mechanical Analysis of a Novel Sternal Closure System in Static Tensile Loading.

The most common means of sternal closure after sternotomy is stainless steel wire cerclage. These wires, while inexpensive and simple in design, are known to be associated with low strength and sternal dehiscence. In this biomechanical analysis, we compare single sternal wires, double sternal wires, and a novel sternal closure device we have designed to mitigate sternal dehiscence. The device uses polymer grommets at the sternal interfaces to distribute load over a large surface area of bone. Samples of each closure device were installed in a bone model and distracted at a rate of 10 mm/min wh

Finite element biomechanical evaluation of internal fixation methods for metacarpal shaft fractures under multiple factors.

Metacarpal shaft fractures often require surgical correction of displacement, angulation, or rotational deformities to restore function. Kirschner wires (K-wires), plates, and intramedullary screw fixation each have advantages and limitations. However, inconsistent biomechanical evidence in existing studies has precluded definitive conclusions regarding the optimal fixation technique. This studycompared K-wires, plates, and intramedullary screw for metacarpal shaft fractures using finite element analysis (FEA). In normal bone, intramedullary screw matched plate stability under low loads but wer

[Poly-lactic-acid (PLA) sternal pins for the closure of median sternotomy--report of a case].

Poly-lactic-acid (PLA) sternal pins were used for the closure of median sternotomy in a case of bilateral pneumothorax. After placement 7 sutures of polyester and 2 wires, PLA sternal pins were inserted into the bone marrow of the sternum. The wires were then twisted and tightened, and all sutures were tightened, and the wires were removed. No significant postoperative complications, i.e., osteomyelitis and mediastinitis, sternal dehiscence, or bone marrow dysfunction, were observed. In addition, the PLA sternal pins were absorbed. In the closure of median sternotomy, PLA sternal pins provide

[K-wire migration 28 years after operation].

We present a case report of K-wire migration in a 64-year-old woman 28 years after insertion in the right pelvic bone. Two K-wires migrated to the contralateral side of the abdomen and right gluteus maximus, respectively. The K-wires were removed without complications. This case confirms the unpredictability of retained K-wires. The migration of the K-wires may have been triggered by recent cemented cuprevision. To our knowledge, K-wire migration in relation to aseptic loosening after cuprevision has not previously been reported in the literature.

Transforaminal Migration of K-Wire From Clavicle to Cervical Spinal Canal: A Case Report and Review of Literature.

INTRODUCTION: Kirshner wires are commonly used for orthopedic surgical fixation for shoulder injuries, particularly around the acromioclavicular joint. They are versatile, cheap, and minimally invasive in stabilizing bone fragments. However, there have been cases of secondary migration of K-wires from the clavicle to surrounding tissues, particularly around the cervical spine. CASE REPORT: We present a case of a 60-year-old female with left-sided neck pain and radiation to the left upper limb, a K-wire was found to have migrated through the C7-T1 foramina left side into the spinal canal poste

Influence of bone density on stability in TBW.

Osteoporosis is a common disease that leads to a reduction in bone density and increases the risk of fractures. Stable surgical treatment is particularly important for these fractures. The aim of this study was to examine the influence of bone density in the area of the proximal ulna on the failure of the fixation technique of K-wires in tension band wiring (TBW). We provided 10 ulna specimens with TBW and biomechanically examined the pull-out strength of bi- and tricortical K-wires. Bone density measurement was performed using qCT. In the paired t-test, the tricortical group showed a signif
