Machine learning-based modeling for monitoring and predicting the detection rate and severity of pathogenic microorganisms in seafood.

Pathogenic microbial contamination in seafood presents persistent risks to food safety and public health. Conventional monitoring methods frequently lack adequate sensitivity and specificity, particularly under dynamic environmental conditions. To address these limitations, this study developed a machine learning (ML) framework utilizing microbial testing data from seafood samples collected in Yantai, China (2014-2024), with 2025 data reserved for external validation. The framework simultaneously predicts pathogen prevalence and severity levels. And, exploratory data analysis assessed variable

Machine Learning Approaches for Mortality Prediction in ARDS.

Mortality prediction in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is critical for early triage and targeted treatment. In this study, we compared multiple machine learning models to predict 90-day all-cause mortality and 28-day hospital mortality in ARDS patients, with all models achieving good discrimination (AUC: 0.715-0.753 and 0.693-0.721, respectively). Among models, XGBoost achieved the most consistent balance of AUC, recall, and F1 score across both outcomes, making it the most clinically appropriate model where underpredicting high-risk patients brings significant consequences. Safety-oriented and explainable machine learning for KSI crash risk prediction: Evidence from the United Kingdom.

Road traffic crashes pose a serious public safety challenge, particularly due to fatal and serious injuries. Although machine learning (ML) has been widely used for crash severity prediction, many studies remain accuracy-oriented and insufficiently address class imbalance, decision thresholds, and probabilistic reliability. This study proposes a safety-oriented and explainable ML framework for predicting killed or seriously injured (KSI) crashes using nationwide United Kingdom traffic accident data from 2020-2024. Crash severity is reformulated as a binary classification task distinguishing sl

Comparative evaluation of machine-learning algorithms for early detection of metritis in dairy cows.

Metritis is a common postpartum uterine disease in dairy cows that impairs fertility, reduces milk yield, increases culling risk, and causes substantial economic loss. This study aimed to develop and externally validate machine learning models for early metritis prediction using routinely recorded calving and reproductive data from commercial Holstein dairy herds. The analytical unit was the calving-event record, so individual cows could contribute repeated observations across lactations and calendar years. A retrospective development dataset included 92,662 calving-event records collected fro

Vocal features based Parkinson's detection: An ensemble learning approach.

Parkinson's disease (PD) primarily affects the central nervous system. In 2019, over 8.5 million cases were reported, with numbers continuing to rise. This growing prevalence emphasizes the urgent need for early detection and preventive strategies. To resolve this, numerous methods have been introduced, one of them being machine learning technique. By employing deep learning methods on the large-scale datasets, the early prediction and detection of PD is possible. These methods should be precisely evaluated on the basis of vocal features and the best method to predict this neurodegenerative ai

Impact of the Interaction Between Screen Time and Activity Interests on Adolescent Depression Risk: Construction of a Predictive Model Based on Machine Learning.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent depression is an increasing public health concern, with excessive screen time elevating depression risk and activity interests providing protection. However, most studies examine these behaviors separately and rely on limited analytical methods. This study used machine learning (ML) to develop a predictive model and evaluate the combined influence of screen time and activity interests on adolescent mental health. METHODS: A multi-center survey was conducted among adolescents aged 10-14 years in Chongchuan District, Nantong. Depression-related domains were assessed using

A multi-level machine learning pipeline for prediction and prioritization of hybrid insulin peptides in type 1 diabetes.

Hybrid insulin peptides (HIPs) are neoepitopes involved in type 1 diabetes (T1D), but their complete repertoire remains unknown. The vast combinatorial space makes experimental screening unfeasible and requires bioinformatics-based prioritization. We developed a multi-level machine learning pipeline for ranking HIP candidates. First, 36 physicochemical and junction-specific features were computed for a reference library of 240 HIPs with known enzyme-linked immunospot (ELISPOT) reactivity, and a baseline Ridge regression model was trained. Next, all possible HIP candidates with 7-9 amino acid r

A multimodal explainable artificial intelligence framework for interpretable Parkinson's disease prediction.

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a complex neurological disorder that is difficult to diagnose at an early stage. Early diagnosis and prediction of the disease can help improve the prognosis of patients and therapeutic interventions. Although machine learning (ML) has shown strong potential for PD diagnosis and prediction, its clinical use is limited by the lack of model interpretability. In this study, advanced but interpretable framework is proposed for Parkinson’s disease diagnosis by incorporating explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) and machine learning methods. The proposed framework est

Biologically-informed regional subset analysis with CatBoost for robust tissue-of-origin prediction.

Accurate identification of cancer tissue/cell of origin (TOO/COO) is critical for diagnosis and treatment; yet existing whole-genome approaches demand extensive computation and often struggle with sparse mutation signals. Here, we introduce an informative regional subset framework that selects a small number of biologically and statistically significant 1Mbp genomic intervals to train a CatBoost prediction model. On a benchmark of 137 whole-genome samples across six cancer types, our method achieved a 4% gain in melanoma accuracy (from 88.0% using all 2,128 regions to 92.0% with 300 regions),

A Comparison of Machine Learning Approaches to Activity Classification Using IMU Data Collected in a Community-Based Setting.

Machine learning (ML) algorithms can be used to extract clinically meaningful information from movement data captured by inertial measurement units (IMUs), but many human activity recognition (HAR) pipelines are developed on large laboratory datasets that may not reflect small, heterogeneous, real-world samples. The purpose of this study is to systematically compare the accuracy of multiple ML models, feature sets (both simple and expanded), class balancing strategies, null and transition period handling techniques, and sensor configurations for recognizing a set of four everyday activities ex

Accelerating Screening of Phase Separation Agents for Carbon Dioxide Capture: A Machine-Learning Framework with Interpretable Quantum Chemical Insights.

Against the backdrop of addressing climate change and reducing carbon emissions, carbon dioxide capture technology has gained increasing significance as a key approach toward achieving global carbon neutrality. However, in the development of phase change absorbents, current screening methods for phase separation agents (PSAs) predominantly rely on static empirical parameters, neglecting electronic effects and phase equilibrium mechanisms, which somewhat restrict the improvement of screening efficiency and accuracy. This study innovatively proposes a novel paradigm integrating quantum chemistry

Prediction of fluoride contamination in groundwater of Nigeria using a weighted ensemble machine-learning framework.

Fluoride (F-) contamination of groundwater remains a significant health risk in Nigeria, affecting rural and urban communities. This study examines the spatial distribution and factors influencing F- levels using a weighted ensemble machine learning model to forecast high-risk areas and estimate exposed populations. The primary factor controlling geogenic F- is the aquifer lithology, with the highest F- levels found in groundwater from crystalline basement complexes and sedimentary sandstones. The problem is exacerbated in dry regions, including semiarid and arid zones, where evaporation rates
