Sexual hallucinations and delusions in borderline personality disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Sexual hallucinations have lifetime prevalence rates of 0.4% in the general population and up to 44% in schizophrenia spectrum disorders. For borderline personality disorder (BPD) these rates are unknown. We therefore studied prevalence rates of sexual hallucinations and delusions in this group, as well as their phenomenological characteristics and their connection with childhood trauma. METHODS: We carried out a cross-sectional study among outpatients with BPD, using the Sexual Hallucinations and Delusions Questionnaire (SHDQ), the Psychotic Symptom Rating Scales-Auditory Verba

Psychometric Evaluation of the Borderline Personality Disorder Checklist.

BACKGROUND: Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a severe and disabling condition. The Borderline Personality Disorder Checklist (BPDCL) was designed to specifically assess the subjective burden of a patient due to BPD symptoms. Various translations have been developed, but an assessment of the psychometric properties of these translations is needed. The aim was to examine the psychometric qualities of the BPDCL across different languages (i.e., Italian, Dutch, German, Spanish, English, and Greek). METHODS: Secondary data was used by reaching out to various researchers, who administered t

Resilience in borderline personality disorder: a scoping review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review summarizes current research on resilience in individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD), its role in the development of BPD, and its impact on symptoms and recovery. Low resilience is considered a key factor contributing to emotional dysregulation and difficulty coping with adversity in BPD. RECENT FINDINGS: A scoping literature search identified 177 records, of which 12 studies met the inclusion criteria. Patients with BPD consistently exhibit lower resilience scores compared to mentally healthy control groups, with higher BPD features linked to red

[Evidence-based inpatient psychotherapy in borderline personality disorder].

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is frequent (prevalence in Germany between 0.7% and 4.5%) [11] and is associated with a high level of psychological stress and frequent emergency inpatient admissions. The provision of disorder-specific outpatient psychotherapy is still insufficient also in Germany. OBJECTIVE: This article provides an overview of the available data on the effectiveness of inpatient psychotherapy for BPD. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A qualitative review on the effectiveness and therapy outcome predictors was conducted based on a literature search in PubMed. RESULTS

[Borderline Personality Disorder in the Somatic Hospital Setting].

Borderline Personality Disorder in the Somatic Hospital Setting Abstract. The Borderline Personality Disorder is a common mental illness characterized by emotional instability, interactional difficulties, an unstable sense of self and impulsive behaviour which is often self-destructive. Since these problems frequently occur in the doctor-patient relationship, patients might be regarded as "difficult" or even manipulative. This may lead to stigmatization and medical undertreatment when due to common mental and somatic comorbidities the condition requires thorough high-standard medical care. Whe

Borderline Personality Disorder, Lived Space, and the Stimmung.

Most articles and theories about borderline personality disorder (BPD), either in the psychoanalytical field or the cognitivist one, explicitly or implicitly inscribe themselves in a topographical framework that either carry a fundamental representational a priori or give prominence to causal explanations. Less is written about the phenomenological everyday life-world of borderline people. This article aims to contribute to the description of such a world. Drawing upon clinical sequences that give prominence to the first-person perspective, we will analyse the experience of some typical "sympt

Borderline Personality Disorder "Discouraged Type": A Case Report.

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a mental illness associated with a significant degree of distress and impairment because of the difficulties in effectively regulating emotions. BPD is frequently associated with Depressive Disorders, most commonly Major Depressive Disorder and Dysthymia. Here, we present a case report of an 18-year-old female patient hospitalized with a severe depressive episode and psychotic symptoms. A few months after discharge, the interpersonal difficulties, unstable self-image, fear of chronic abandonment, feeling of emptiness, paranoid ideation, helplessness, ob

A Life Span Perspective on Borderline Personality Disorder.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To provide an update of a life span perspective on borderline personality disorder (BPD). We address the life span course of BPD, and discuss possible implications for assessment, treatment, and research. RECENT FINDINGS: BPD first manifests itself in adolescence and can be distinguished reliably from normal adolescent development. The course of BPD from adolescence to late life is characterized by a symptomatic switch from affective dysregulation, impulsivity, and suicidality to maladaptive interpersonal functioning and enduring functional impairments, with subsequent remi

Psychopathological outcomes of adolescent borderline personality disorder symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: Despite considerable morbidity and functional losses associated with adolescent borderline personality disorder, little is known about psychopathological outcomes. This study examined associations between adolescent borderline personality disorder symptoms and subsequent depressive, psychotic and hypomanic symptoms. METHODS: We used data from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children. Participants were adolescents living in the community who had data for all longitudinal outcomes (N = 1758). We used logistic regression and path analysis to investigate associations between

Substance Use in Youth With Borderline Personality Disorder.

Co-occurring substance misuse and borderline personality disorder (BPD) in adults is associated with more severe dysfunction and poorer prognosis than BPD alone. However, it is unknown to what extent substance use in youth with BPD is normative for this age group or pathological. This study compared substance use in 117 help-seeking youth (aged 15-25 years) with their first presentation for treatment of BPD, with an epidemiological general population sample and with healthy, age- and gender-matched controls. Established instruments were used to diagnose BPD and assess substance use. Alcohol de

Trauma and dissociation: implications for borderline personality disorder.

Psychological trauma can have devastating consequences on emotion regulatory capacities and lead to dissociative processes that provide subjective detachment from overwhelming emotional experience during and in the aftermath of trauma. Dissociation is a complex phenomenon that comprises a host of symptoms and factors, including depersonalization, derealization, time distortion, dissociative flashbacks, and alterations in the perception of the self. Dissociation occurs in up to two thirds of patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD). The neurobiology of traumatic dissociation has demo

Borderline personality disorder features and mate retention tactics.

The purpose of the present study was to examine the association between features of borderline personality disorder (BPD) and mate retention tactics as a means of examining an evolutionary perspective on the association between BPD features and interpersonal problems and violence in romantic relationships. Two-hundred twenty-five college student participants completed the Personality Assessment Inventory for Borderlines (PAI-BOR; Morey, 1991) and the Mate Retention Inventory-Short Form (MRI-SF; Buss, Shackelford, & McKibbin, 2008) embedded within other measures. There was a strong association

[Repetitive thermal self-manipulation in borderline personality disorder].

Self-mutilations are one of the major characteristics of patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD). Thermal injuries of BPD should be treated by a plastic surgeon who is faced to a challenge in the plastic-reconstructive strategy because of the most complex psychiatric disease. This means the need of a multidisciplinary strategy. Based on 3 case reports such conflict between best plastic reconstructive treatment of the burns wound and the psychiatric limit with the appropriate therapy options are presented.

Stability of borderline personality disorder features in girls.

Little empirical evidence exists regarding developmental antecedents of borderline personality disorder (BPD) features in children and adolescents. As a first step in addressing this gap in our knowledge, this study examined the factor structure and stability of putative underlying BPD features, specifically impulsivity, negative affectivity, and interpersonal aggression, in 6-12-year-old girls. We report on results from exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses of underlying BPD dimensions as rated by parents and teachers over six successive data waves in a large, community sample of girls
