Trajectories of Alcohol-Related Problems Among First-Year Nursing Students: Nature, Predictors, and Outcomes.

This study aims to contribute to an improved dynamic person-centred comprehension of the distinct trajectories of alcohol-related problems observed among first-year nursing students. Data was collected from 2963 first-year nursing students on four occasions over the course of their first semester of professional training (3 months). Four main profiles best described trajectories of alcohol-related problems: High and Decreasing, Moderate and Stable, Moderate and Increasing, and Low and Stable. Our results suggested that initial (but not change in) levels of boredom, harassment, and alcohol use

Effects of caffeine on mood and memory.

The effects of caffeine on mood and memory tasks were investigated in a double-blind study of 95 healthy young adults who were randomly assigned to three doses: 0, 200, and 400 mg of oral administration of caffeine. Subjects completed a battery of tasks once predrug and several times postdrug. Caffeine, in general, showed nonsignificant effects on cognitive, learning, and memory performance. The exception is that 200 mg caffeine facilitated performance on the relatively more difficult cancellation (addition and multiplication) tasks than the digit cancellation task. In addition caffeine decrea

Proximal affect versus distal self-guides in dual-processing EMI environments: Testing control-value theory in higher education.

Grounded in Control-Value Theory (CVT), this study examines how proximal achievement emotions (enjoyment, anxiety, and boredom) predict communicative intention-operationalized as willingness to communicate (WTC)-in English-Medium Instruction (EMI) higher education-a context typically characterized by dual processing of disciplinary content and a foreign language, and whether distal self-guides (ideal language and disciplinary selves) mediate these relationships. Survey data from 350 Chinese EMI students in higher education-a context characterized by dual processing of disciplinary content and

Emotion regulation and trichotillomania: a comparison of clinical and nonclinical hair pulling.

This study investigated the emotion regulation hypothesis of trichotillomania (TTM) using a retrospective self-report measure and an experimental hair-pulling task. Participants diagnosed with TTM (n=34) and nonclinical control (NC) volunteers (n=32) were compared on ratings of emotional experiences associated with hair pulling. Data from the retrospective self-report measure supported the emotion regulation hypothesis of TTM. The TTM group reported larger decreases than the NC participants in boredom, sadness, anger, and tension, and larger increases in relief and calm from before to during p

The relationships between negative emotions and latent classes of smartphone addiction.

The relationships between negative emotions and smartphone addiction has been tested through the literature. However, most of the studies applied variable-centered approaches. The heterogeneity of smartphone addiction severity has not been examined for the associations with negative emotion variables. The purposes of the present study is to explore the latent classes of smartphone addiction and analyze the relationships between depression, social anxiety and boredom and these subgroups. The Smartphone Addiction Scale-Short Version (SAS-SV) and three negative emotion scales were employed to con

Predictors and patterns of gambling behaviour across the COVID-19 lockdown: Findings from a UK cohort study.

The negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the economy has raised concerns about negative coping behaviours to offset financial losses. We used a subset of a longitudinal study of UK adults (N = 19,963) to examine a range of predictors of (i) gambling during the first strict lockdown, (ii) gambling more frequently during this strict lockdown compared to before lockdown, and (iii) continued increased frequency of gambling during the relaxation of restrictions. Results from logistic regressions indicated that amongst other factors, those with progressively lower levels of education, were st

Acceptance of communication robots among patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis with psychological stress.

OBJECTIVE: Although several psychotherapeutic interventions have been introduced for patients receiving maintenance hemodialysis (MHD), challenges such as feelings of shame persist. Prior studies indicate that robot-assisted interviews evoke less shame than human interactions. The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) provides a robust framework for examining factors influencing technology adoption. This study applied TAM to evaluate the use of a communication robot (Sota-100) in psychotherapeutic interventions for patients with MHD. METHODS: Twenty-six outpatients with MHD participated. The association between anxiety sensitivity and eating expectancies in Hispanic emerging adult college students.

Hispanic emerging adult college students experience increased exposure to psychological distress associated with emerging adulthood and sociocultural pressures, which increases the risk for developing maladaptive eating cognitions and behaviors. Eating expectancies have been implicated as a maladaptive eating cognition associated with unhealthy eating, and there is a need to examine affective vulnerability processes that may drive such cognitions among this health-vulnerable population. One factor that has demonstrated relations to maladaptive eating expectancies is anxiety sensitivity. Theref

A complexity-science framework for studying flow: using media to probe brain-phenomenology dynamics.

Consciousness spans a range of phenomenological experiences, from effortless immersion to disengaged monotony, yet how such phenomenology emerges from brain activity is not well understood. Flow, a phenomenological experience frequently elicited by interactive media, has drawn attention for its links to performance and wellbeing, but existing neural accounts rely on single-region or small-network analyses that overlook the brain's distributed and dynamic nature. Complexity science offers tools that capture brain-wide dynamics, but this approach has rarely been applied to flow or to its natural

Time perception during emotional reviviscence: distinct contributions of duration estimation and passage-of-time judgment.

Affective states are known to distort time perception, yet most studies rely on externally presented stimuli and rarely distinguish between duration estimation (DE) and passage-of-time judgment (PoTj). Across both studies, PoTj showed more robust affective modulation than DE, whereas DE appeared to be less sensitive to affective context. Participants relived positive and negative autobiographical emotions during a fixed 76-s interval. Study 1 revealed that positive emotions were associated with shorter duration estimates and a faster subjective passage of time than negative emotions, while bor

Intensity, frequency, and differentiation of discrete emotion categories in daily life and their associations with depression, worry, and rumination.

Previous research examining links between psychopathology and emotions in daily life have largely focused on disorder-specific patterns of mean-level positive and negative affect. In this study, we examined three transdiagnostic dimensions of psychopathology, namely depression, worry, and rumination, and their association with the intensity, frequency, and differentiation of discrete emotion categories endorsed in daily life. Three independent samples of young adults (total n = 614) completed baseline measures assessing depression, worry, and rumination followed by a 1-week daily diary procedu

COVID-19 and psychiatric illness: rectal foreign bodies (30 stylus batteries) in a young male patient affected by Asperger syndrome.

Here we present the case of a 17-year-old male patient, affected by Asperger syndrome, who reached the emergency division of our hospital after anal insertion of some stylus batteries. Transanal extraction of 30 stylus batteries avoided surgical intervention. Lockdown and boredom due to the strict domestic quarantine policies adopted during COVID-19 pandemic might have unmasked in our patient a susceptibility to unhealthy behaviour.

Associations Between Gambling Motives and More Severe Gambling Disorder - Does Gender Matter?

Gambling Disorder (GD) is a behavioural addiction with complex, detrimental psychological, economic, and social consequences. Previous research has examined gender differences in the prevalence of distinct gambling motives and has linked gambling motives to at-risk behaviour. Whether motives affect probabilities of transition to higher GD severity levels differently in males and females remains unclear. Using an online self-test, we assessed the prevalence distinct GD severity levels according to the DSM-5 criteria and gambling motives with items addressing domains of the "Gambling Motives Que
