Host-parasite-sediment partitioning of metals in Octolasmis-infested Scylla mud crabs from Sarawak mangrove rivers, Malaysian Borneo.

Mud crabs (Scylla spp.) can accumulate metals due to their benthic and deposit feeding nature. Octolasmis spp. are pedunculate barnacles commonly found in the gill chambers of mud crabs and traditionally regarded as ectocommensals. However, high infestations can obstruct airflow, trap organic waste, impair respiration, cause oxidative stress, tissue inflammation, and reduced immune responses in hosts, thus, supporting their consideration as ectoparasites. Octolasmis may also accumulate higher metal concentrations than their hosts, potentially revealing contaminant exposure in aquatic environme

Burkholderia pseudomallei in Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo, Remains Highly Susceptible to Trimethoprim-Sulfamethoxazole Despite Resistance to Its Individual Components.

Burkholderia pseudomallei, the causative agent of melioidosis, is endemic in Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo, where it is represented by a unique gentamicin-susceptible population. Despite trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (co-trimoxazole) being the cornerstone of eradication therapy, emerging reports of elevated minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) among Sarawak isolates have raised concerns over its clinical efficacy. We performed a retrospective and comprehensive antibiotic susceptibility assessment of clinical B. pseudomallei isolates from hospitals across Sarawak. Susceptibility to trimethoprim

A new intertidal barnacle, Chthamalus ngankeeae sp. nov. (Balanomorpha: Chthamalidae) from the Malaysian Peninsula and western Borneo waters.

The present study identified a new barnacle species from Malaysian waters, Chthamalus ngankeeae sp. nov., on morphological and molecular grounds. Chthamalus ngankeeae sp. nov. is an intertidal species that is abundant on high shores, above the oyster zone. Chthamalus ngankeeae sp. nov. has two morphotypes, based on shell colour. Brown morphs have brown shells with pale brown ridges and look similar to Microeuraphia withersi (Pilsbry, 1916). Chthamalus ngankeeae sp. nov. has four teeth on the mandible, while M. withersi has but three. White morphs of C. ngankeeae sp. nov. possess white shells w

Serological analysis in humans in Malaysian Borneo suggests prior exposure to H5 avian influenza near migratory shorebird habitats.

Cases of H5 highly pathogenic avian influenzas (HPAI) are on the rise. Although mammalian spillover events are rare, H5N1 viruses have an estimated mortality rate in humans of 60%. No human cases of H5 infection have been reported in Malaysian Borneo, but HPAI has circulated in poultry and migratory avian species transiting through the region. Recent deforestation in coastal habitats in Malaysian Borneo may increase the proximity between humans and migratory birds. We hypothesise that higher rates of human-animal contact, caused by this habitat destruction, will increase the likelihood of pote

Population genetic analysis of Plasmodium knowlesi reveals differential selection and exchange events between Borneo and Peninsular sub-populations.

The zoonotic Plasmodium knowlesi parasite is a growing public health concern in Southeast Asia, especially in Malaysia, where elimination of P. falciparum and P. vivax malaria has been the focus of control efforts. Understanding of the genetic diversity of P. knowlesi parasites can provide insights into its evolution, population structure, diagnostics, transmission dynamics, and the emergence of drug resistance. Previous work has revealed that P. knowlesi fall into three main sub-populations distinguished by a combination of geographical location and macaque host (Macaca fascicularis and M. ne

Genetic and haplotype analyses targeting cytochrome b gene of Plasmodium knowlesi isolates of Malaysian Borneo and Peninsular Malaysia.

Malaria is a notorious disease which causes major global morbidity and mortality. This study aims to investigate the genetic and haplotype differences of Plasmodium knowlesi (P. knowlesi) isolates in Malaysian Borneo and Peninsular Malaysia based on the molecular analysis of the cytochrome b (cyt b) gene. The cyt b gene of 49 P. knowlesi isolates collected from Sabah, Malaysian Borneo and Peninsular Malaysia was amplified using PCR, cloned into a commercialized vector and sequenced. In addition, 45 cyt b sequences were retrieved from humans and macaques bringing to a total of 94 cyt b gene nuc

Comparative analysis of ITS1 nucleotide sequence reveals distinct genetic difference between Brugia malayi from Northeast Borneo and Thailand.

Brugia malayi is one of the parasitic worms which causes lymphatic filariasis in humans. Its geographical distribution includes a large part of Asia. Despite its wide distribution, very little is known about the genetic variation and molecular epidemiology of this species. In this study, the internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1) nucleotide sequences of B. malayi from microfilaria-positive human blood samples in Northeast Borneo Island were determined, and compared with published ITS1 sequences of B. malayi isolated from cats and humans in Thailand. Multiple alignment analysis revealed that B. m

Stem girth changes in response to soil water potential in lowland dipterocarp forest in Borneo: An individualistic time-series analysis.

Time-series data offer a way of investigating the causes driving ecological processes as phenomena. To test for possible differences in water relations between species of different forest structural guilds at Danum (Sabah, NE Borneo), daily stem girth increments (gthi), of 18 trees across six species were regressed individually on soil moisture potential (SMP) and temperature (TEMP), accounting for temporal autocorrelation (in GLS-arima models), and compared between a wet and a dry period. The best-fitting significant variables were SMP the day before and TEMP the same day. The first resulted

Phosphorus and nitrogen resorption from different chemical fractions in senescing leaves of tropical tree species on Mount Kinabalu, Borneo.

Nutrient resorption, a process by which plants degrade organic compounds and resorb their nutrients from senescing tissues, is a crucial plant function to increase growth and fitness in nutrient-poor environments. Tropical trees on phosphorus (P)-poor soils are particularly known to have high P-resorption efficiency (PRE, the percentage of P resorbed from senescing leaves before abscission per total P in green leaves). However, the biochemical mechanisms underlying this greater PRE remain unclear. In this study, we determined the P concentration in easily soluble, nucleic acid, lipid and resid

First molecular documented case of a rarely reported parasite: Plasmodium knowlesi infection in Denmark in a traveller returning from Malaysian Borneo.

Plasmodium knowlesi has been reported as an emerging infection throughout the Southeast Asian region, especially in the Malaysian state of Sabah, where it accounts for the majority of the malaria cases reported. This is in contrast to Europe, where imported P. knowlesi is a rarely reported infection. We present a case of P. knowlesi infection in a Danish woman returning from a short trip to Malaysian Borneo. Microscopy of blood smears revealed 0.8% infected erythrocytes, but due to the atypical morphological presentation, a conclusive species identification was made by molecular methods. Plasm

Plasmodium knowlesi from archival blood films: further evidence that human infections are widely distributed and not newly emergent in Malaysian Borneo.

Human infections with Plasmodium knowlesi have been misdiagnosed by microscopy as Plasmodium malariae due to their morphological similarities. Although microscopy-identified P. malariae cases have been reported in the state of Sarawak (Malaysian Borneo) as early as 1952, recent epidemiological studies suggest the absence of indigenous P. malariae infections. The present study aimed to determine the past incidence and distribution of P. knowlesi infections in the state of Sarawak based on archival blood films from patients diagnosed by microscopy as having P. malariae infections. Brugia malayi: relationship between anti-sheath antibodies and amicrofilaremia in natives living in an endemic area of South Kalimantan, Borneo.

A seroepidemiological approach was taken to elucidate the relationship between anti-microfilarial antibodies and amicrofilaremia in humans living under natural conditions of exposure to Brugia malayi. Entomological observations indicated that all of the people in the study population in South Kalimantan, Borneo, were exposed repeatedly to filarial infection. A third of the population had antibodies to the sheath of microfilariae. The prevalence and titer of anti-sheath IgM was higher than anti-sheath IgG or IgA. There was a statistically significant correlation between anti-sheath antibody and
