Stroke and HIV in Botswana: A prospective study of risk factors and outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: HIV is associated with an increased risk of stroke, but there are sparse data on risk factors for stroke in people living with HIV in Sub-Saharan African. The goal of this study was to identify HIV-specific stroke characteristics and risk factors among adults in Botswana. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study in Gaborone, Botswana from June 2015 to June 2017 comparing risk factors and outcomes among adults with and without HIV admitted for acute stroke. In addition, we conducted a case-control study comparing patients with HIV and stroke to outpatients with HIV and no hi

Intervention targets for people living with HIV and depressive symptoms in Botswana.

Background: The prevalence of HIV in Botswana is high. Many people living with HIV (PLWH) suffer from depressive symptoms and have inadequate coping skills. Most PLWH do not receive adequate psychological treatment. Empirically based interventions for PLWH with depressive symptoms in Botswana should be developed, with a focus on improving coping skills. The present study was a first step towards this goal, by trying to identify targets for intervention. The study aimed to provide prevalence rates of depression among PLWH in Botswana, to assess their mental health treatment needs and wishes as

Comparative analyses of clinical and environmental populations of Cryptococcus neoformans in Botswana.

Cryptococcus neoformans var. grubii (Cng) is the most common cause of fungal meningitis, and its prevalence is highest in sub-Saharan Africa. Patients become infected by inhaling airborne spores or desiccated yeast cells from the environment, where the fungus thrives in avian droppings, trees and soil. To investigate the prevalence and population structure of Cng in southern Africa, we analysed isolates from 77 environmental samples and 64 patients. We detected significant genetic diversity among isolates and strong evidence of geographic structure at the local level. High proportions of isola

Serum concentrations of antimycobacterial drugs in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis in Botswana.

BACKGROUND: We conducted a pharmacokinetic study of antimycobacterial drugs involving a cohort of patients with pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) in Gaborone, Botswana, to assess the prevalence of and risk factors for low drug concentrations in serum. METHODS: Adults participated if they had a history of cough > or =2 weeks, had abnormal chest radiograph findings, consented to testing for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), had sputum cultures positive for Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and were receiving antituberculous therapy for >7 days. Observed maximum serum concentrations were compared with pub

Rapid assessment of tuberculosis in a large prison system--Botswana, 2002.

Prisons are settings in which tuberculosis (TB) transmission occurs, and TB rates in prisons are often five to 10 times higher than national rates. Data on the prevalence of TB in prisons in Africa are limited; however, studies from Malawi, Ivory Coast, and Tanzania that used active screening found TB rates > or = 10 times higher than national rates. During 1989-2001, TB rates in Botswana increased threefold, from 199 cases per 100,000 population to 620 (Botswana National TB Program, unpublished data, 2002). This increase has been associated with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemic

Tuberculosis attributed to transmission within healthcare facilities, Botswana-The Kopanyo Study.

OBJECTIVE: Healthcare facilities are a well-known high-risk environment for transmission of M. tuberculosis, the etiologic agent of tuberculosis (TB) disease. However, the link between M. tuberculosis transmission in healthcare facilities and its role in the general TB epidemic is unknown. We estimated the proportion of overall TB transmission in the general population attributable to healthcare facilities. METHODS: We combined data from a prospective, population-based molecular epidemiologic study with a universal electronic medical record (EMR) covering all healthcare facilities in Botswana

Baseline evaluation of routine HIV testing among tuberculosis patients in Botswana.

In January 2004, the government of Botswana introduced a policy of routine, non-compulsory human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) testing to increase testing and access to antiretroviral treatment (ART) for individuals presenting for medical treatment. Before a systematic implementation of the policy, we conducted a cross-sectional survey of tuberculosis (TB) record data from 46 clinics in 10 districts to assess baseline HIV testing rates among TB patients. Recorded HIV results from the facility TB register and TB treatment card were reviewed. Of the 1242 TB patients entered in the register, 47% h

CK8/18 and Claudin Profile of Female Breast Cancers from Botswana.

BACKGROUND: Globally, breast cancer mortality is rising particularly in transitioning countries where it is exacerbated by late diagnosis and poor diagnostic infrastructure. The dearth of data on the biology of breast tumours from under-studied populations compromise management of breast cancer patients resulting in poor patient outcomes. We conducted a study to determine the prevalence and impact of Claudin-low and CK8/18 in the Botswana female breast cancer cohort. DESIGN: This laboratory experimentally retrospective cross-sectional study was carried out on archived formalin-fixed paraffin

Tobacco Control in Botswana: Effectiveness of Tax Changes in Reducing Tobacco Demand.

INTRODUCTION: Botswana has one of the highest adult tobacco-use rates in the WHO African Region. Despite measures and policies put in place to control tobacco consumption, there is still a widespread use of tobacco products in the country. This is because demand for tobacco and tobacco products is mostly affected by changes in tobacco prices and related taxes. This study therefore seeks to analyze the responsiveness of cigarette demand to price changes in Botswana. METHODS: This study analyses Botswana's conditional price elasticity of cigarette demand using Deaton's model. Deaton's method us

Whole-genome sequencing suggests recent transmission of rifampicin-resistant tuberculosis in Botswana.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB), caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), continues to be a global health challenge. Transmission of drug-resistant TB (DR-TB) poses a significant threat to effective TB prevention and care strategies. This study's aim was to investigate transmission patterns of DR-TB strains, identify factors associated with the spread and reconstruct their transmission dynamics over the study period in Botswana. METHODS: We analysed whole-genome sequencing data for 195 rifampicin-resistant Mtb isolates, which were isolated between 2016 and 2023. Potential recent transmission

Microbial quality of beef tripe (mogodu) sampled from butcheries around Gaborone, Botswana.

Beef tripe is a traditional delicacy in Botswana and many African communities. Despite its popularity and nutritional value, tripe remains highly perishable and prone to microbial contamination due to its origin in the bovine gastrointestinal system and potential exposure during processing. This study assessed the microbial quality of beef tripe samples collected from 18 butcheries in Gaborone, Botswana, including both microbial enumeration and species-level identification. The results revealed a high microbial load across all samples, with aerobic plate counts exceeding 5 log colony forming u

Factors associated with late diagnosis of breast cancer among women in Botswana.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is a public health issue in Botswana. Associations of patient-level factors with late breast cancer diagnosis are not well understood. This may explain why there are many cases of late diagnosis. AIM: We assessed patient-level factors associated with late breast cancer diagnosis among women in Botswana. SETTING: The study was conducted at four designated cancer public health facilities in Botswana. METHODS: A cross-sectional hospital-based survey questionnaire was administered to 211 adult women (15 September 2023 - 15 December 2023). Descriptive statistics, Chi-sq
