Feeding and nonnutritive sucking habits and prevalence of open bite and crossbite in children/adolescents with Down syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the influence of breastfeeding, bottle feeding, and nonnutritive sucking habits on the prevalence of open bite and anterior/posterior crossbite in children with Down syndrome (DS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out in 112 pairs of mothers/children with DS between 3 and 18 years of age at a maternal/children's hospital in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The children with DS were clinically examined for the presence of open bite as well as anterior and posterior crossbite. Information on breastfeeding, bottle feeding, and nonnutritive sucking habits wa

Effect of offering a second colostrum feeding and delivery method on transfer of passive immunity, health, and behavior in neonatal calves.

Our objective was to describe the effect of providing a second feeding of maternal colostrum (MC) or colostrum replacement (CR), using either an esophageal tube or nipple bottle delivery method, on transfer of passive immunity, and on measures of calf health and behavior during the first 3 d of life, as compared with providing a milk replacer control. Eligible newborn dairy and dairy x beef calves on a commercial Minnesota dairy were weighed, placed in a bedded pen, then fitted with a tri-axial accelerometer. All calves were tube-fed a first feeding of pooled heat-treated MC (average IgG = 84

A study of the growth of 200 newborn babies for a period of 6 months according to the type of nutrition.

Two hundred newborn babies were followed up for 6 months to monitor their weight, height, head circumference and skinfold thickness to assess the effects of exclusive breast-feeding, mixed feeding, bottle feeding and socio-economic factors on these parameters. Of the 200 babies, 90% were breast-fed upon discharge, and 83 (46%) commenced mixed feeding within the first 6 weeks. Inadequate breast-milk was the main reason given for starting mixed feeding (63.9%). Weight at 6 months was significantly greater in breast-fed infants compared with those who were only bottle-fed. Skinfold thickness at 6

Longitudinal assessment of sleep and fatigue according to baby feeding method in postpartum women: a prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Poor subjective sleep quality, depressive symptoms and fatigue occur frequently in postpartum. However, the dynamics of their respective associations from prepartum throughout the maternity period in function of baby feeding method have not been fully elucidated. METHODS: Prospective, longitudinal study using validated questionnaires probing for sleep quality, insomnia, fatigue and depressive symptoms at 35-37 weeks of gestation and at 2, 8 and 12 weeks postpartum in the obstetric departments of two Flemish hospitals. Somers'd ordinal correlation was used for correlations between

Parental control over feeding in infancy. Influence of infant weight, appetite and feeding method.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Parental control over feeding has been linked to child overweight. Parental control behaviours have been assumed to be exogenous to the child, but emerging evidence suggests they are also child-responsive. This study tests the hypothesis that parental control in early infancy is responsive to infant appetite and weight. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Participants were 1920 mothers from the Gemini twin cohort, using one randomly selected child per family. Data come from questionnaires completed when the children were approximately 8 months. Mothers completed measures of 'press

Osmolalities of bottle- and breast-milk fed to poor urban Brazilian infants.

Feeding practices related to osmotic strength of bottle-milk and breast-milk were studied in 133 families with infants less than 1 year of age in a poor urban settlement in Brasilia, Brazil. Osmolality [mean (SEM)] of breast-milk [318.8 (4.46) mOsm/kg water] was significantly less than that of bottle-milk [568.7 (29.9) mOsm/kg water]. The wide range of osmotic strength (253.7-1,380.0 mOsm/kg water) found in bottle-milk was partly due to the predominant use (82%) of powdered cow's milk among non-breastfeeders and its improper reconstitution. Diarrhoea and feeding management are also discussed.

Infant feeding behavior: development in patterns and motivation.

Studies of feeding behaviors in human infants not only provide normative data but also allow analyses of the behavioral regulation. Twenty healthy full-term infants were observed by two examiners and were audiovisually and polygraphically recorded under standard conditions at 2, 10, 18, and 26 weeks of age prior to, during, and after breast- or bottle-feeding. The parameters of sucking, breathing and swallowing significantly changed during the first 6 months of age. At 2 weeks, infants were alert and visually attentive during sucking. Breast-fed infants had more opportunities for intimate soci

The rise and fall of the baby's bottle.

As the traditional practice of breast-feeding and later weaning of babies slowly regains popularity in Europe and America, the Third World is just getting used to the idea of bottle-feeding and early weaning. Infant food manufacturers have been indicted for irresponsible marketing of their products, but they are not totally responsible for the present situation. The author examines the origins and development of bottle-feeding, and argues that the present polarisation of views can only be resolved by cooperation between the antagonists.

Nutrition- and feeding practice-related risk factors for rapid weight gain during the first year of life: a population-based birth cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Rapid weight gain (RWG) during infancy increases the risk of excess weight later in life. Nutrition- and feeding practices associated with RWG need to be further examined. The present study aimed to examine nutrition- and feeding practice-related risk factors for RWG during the first year of life. METHODS: A population-based longitudinal birth cohort study of 1780 infants, classified as having RWG or non-RWG during 0-3-4, 0-6 and 6-12 months. RWG was defined as a change > 0.67 in weight standard deviation scores. Associations between nutrition- and feeding practice-related factors

Breast-feeding and the nutritional status of nursing children in Chile.

The work reported here sought to describe the feeding patterns of Chilean children up to 18 months old and their relation to nutritional status. To this end, a survey was conducted in 1993 of 9330 Chilean children under 18 months old who were receiving care through the National Health Service System-which provides care for 75% of all children under age 6. The children, whose mothers or caretakers were interviewed, constituted 94% of a sample selected at random from 102 of the 320 urban health clinics located throughout the country. The interview served to identify the type of feeding (exclusiv

Enhancing infant feeding pathways in a tertiary children's hospital: a sustainability-focused quality improvement project.

Infant feeding in hospital settings requires balancing infection prevention and control, clinical complexity and support for families, while increasingly addressing environmental sustainability. This article details a quality improvement project that aimed to reduce infant exposure to microplastics and nanoplastics associated with single-use feeding bottles and reduce reliance on single-use plastics in infant feeding pathways at a tertiary children's hospital. Baseline data were collected on breast milk feeding, procurement of single-use bottles, parent experience and staff knowledge and confi

Promotion of breast feeding: effect on neonates of change of feeding routine at a maternity unit.

The effect on the health of neonates of a change in neonatal routine care, including general rooming-in, breast feeding on demand and avoidance of supplementary bottle feeding was studied in conjunction to a breast feeding campaign at a maternity unit. There was an accentuated weight loss in the neonatal period during ad libitum breast feeding. The mean serum bilirubin of clinically jaundiced infants was slightly higher on a 4-hourly feeding schedule with supplementary bottles than on the new regimen. There was a similar high (32-33%) incidence of bilirubin levels greater than 205 mumol/l (12

A Ducted, Biomimetic Nipple Improves Aspects of Infant Feeding Physiology and Performance in an Animal Model.

Breastfeeding is widely regarded as the optimal form of feeding infants, as it provides both nutritional and physiological benefits. For example, breastfed infants generate greater intraoral suction and have higher amplitude muscle activities compared to bottle-fed infants, with downstream implications for motor function, development, and health. One mechanism that might explain these physiological differences is the structure of the nipple an infant is feeding on. Breasts in most mammals are ducted soft-tissue structures that require suction to be generated for milk to be released, whereas bo

Growth of Japanese breast-fed and bottle-fed infants from birth to 20 months.

Longitudinal data for weight and length from birth to the 20th month of age obtained from 318 healthy infants were analysed in relation to type of feeding during infancy (breast- or bottle-fed). Differences in the growth patterns of infants according to the type of feeding were confirmed, breast-fed infants tending to be lighter in weight between 6 and 20 months of age than bottle- or mixed-fed infants. However, our analyses of the infants' growth patterns suggest that the differences in mean weight between breast- and bottle-fed infants may be due at least in part to overfeeding of bottle-fed

Examination of the effect of BornFree ActiveFlow baby bottles on infant colic.

Despite its benign, natural course, colic is a significant problem in babies and imparts a psychological and physical burden to parents. This study has examined the relief of colic symptoms when using BornFree ActiveFlow baby bottles by comparing observed symptoms of 30 otherwise healthy newborns (ages 2-21 weeks) who had all been diagnosed as having colic symptoms. Twenty of the babies were switched to feeding with BornFree bottles (the experimental group), while the other 10 babies continued feeding with bottles by other manufacturers (the control group). A significant improvement was exhibi

Effects of Moderate Hyperbilirubinemia on Nutritive Swallowing and Swallowing-Breathing Coordination in Preterm Lambs.

BACKGROUND: Hyperbilirubinemia (HB) occurs in 90% of preterm newborns. HB induces acute neurological disorders (somnolence, abnormal tone, feeding difficulties, auditory dysfunction) and alterations in respiratory control. These findings suggest brainstem neurotoxicity that could also affect swallowing centers. OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that HB impairs nutritive swallowing (NS) and swallowing-breathing coordination. METHODS: Two groups of preterm lambs (born 14 days prior to term), namely control (n = 6) and HB (n = 5), were studied. On day 5 of life (D0), moderate HB (150-250 µmol/l

A Qualitative Study on the Feeding Methods of Filipino Mothers of Children with Cleft Lip and Palate Aged 0 to 24 Months: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: One of the early problems that children born with cleft lip and palate encounter is difficulty in feeding. This affects the child's nutritional needs and the timing of the surgical intervention. Information on the appropriate feeding methods for children with cleft lip and palate will enable mothers to feed their babies properly and facilitate the implementation of appropriate interventions. OBJECTIVES: The study described the feeding problems experienced by children with cleft lip and palate (CLP), and cleft palate (CP) ages 0-24 months, the feeding methods most preferred by Fili

Adult height and weight of breast-fed and bottle-fed Israeli infants.

BACKGROUND: Breast-fed infants grow more slowly than bottle-fed infants. This growth deceleration sometimes alarms health care personnel to the point of considering other forms of nutrition. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the final adult anthropometric outcome associated with breast or formula feeding during infancy. DESIGN: Height and weight data were collected from eight well-baby clinics representing various ethnic origins, lifestyles, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Children were measured every 1 to 2 months for the first 6 months, every 3 months until 2 years of age, and yearly thereafter, unti
